Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Google vs. Bing: The Blind Taste Test

  • erwin · 5 months ago
well, that´s strange. i did a similar test with german words only. the result was very surprising. bing delivered the much better results. in 12 out of 20 results was bing. well, maybe 20 is not representative figure. however, i was very amazed. maybe microsoft did a good job this time?

I'm very Impressed with Bling, I think it have the potential to challenge Google. It would be a good Idea for Bling to start offering email services. Microsoft should incorporate its word software with Bling and offer a Lab features similar to Gmail.
  • Dan Brookins · 6 months ago
Well, to me, it's not the matter of whose results are better. If you really compare the first page of the results, Bing and Google and Yahoo aren't very different. Maybe, one or two pages, but who cares, we've trained ourselves on how to find the results from a search engine. Having said that, I strongly believe that the next search engine should have something phenomenally different in order to differentiate from the existing search engines. One example would be the real-time results, that's quite different and is hot now. Few companies like http://www.boilingpage.com are doing this type of search in a very smart way. You can compare the results and see them for yourself. We gotta wait and see..
  • Amir Michail · 6 months ago
The methodology for this is flawed because people will tend to search for things they have searched for before on Google and then pick Google as the best because they find that ranking more familiar.
  • Jason B Miller · 6 months ago
Hmmmm. All of the best results in one page? My vote is for BlindSearch as the winner.
  • baldjake · 6 months ago
I'd say that it would be tough to pin down one dominant winner as people have different criteria for what makes the best browser.

I found myself voting for Yahoo on pure results most of the time. But in user friendliness I wouldn't drop google for yahoo.

SO it looks like Microsoft made a good move, as there appears to be room for multiple search engines.
  • Scott K · 6 months ago
I'm curious in what ways you find Google more user-friendly than Yahoo. I'm not arguing with your assessment; I'm just trying to find out the reason for it.

If I go to Yahoo's website to search, I use http://search.yahoo.com/ rather than the Yahoo home page. It's a minimal interface more like Google.

While I chose Yahoo most of the time in the blind search, I do understand how user-interface if very important. I score Bing very high in this area. I like the little previews of content, the related links in the sidebar, etc.

I love the show options feature that allows you to dig down into your
results by video, blog, images and by date of result match. I also am a big
fan of the wonder wheel for free keyword research. Those are my user
    friendly favs in google.

The results this test is giving me for Google aren't the same as the results I get when logged into Google. That's another flaw.
  • Miladinoski · 6 months ago
I searched 3 times to see how unbiased the search engines are towards themselves. I'm being objective here:

    - When I searched for 'Google Sucks' (sans quotes) I ended up clicking on Yahoo's result.
    - When I searched for 'Yahoo Sucks' (sans quotes) I ended up clicking on Google's result.
    - When I searched for 'Bing sucks' (sans quotes) on my huge surprise I ended up clicking on Bing's result!

But, when I searched for more technical (meh, just say geeky) terms like, 'how to install ubuntu', 'dpkg problems', 'twitter addiction' :P and several others, I never chose Bing, I chose Yahoo! over Google with 4 over 3.

Bing isn't that bad I even thought that it was better than Yahoo, but these results ended up showing my real search preferences... :P
  • tpp · 6 months ago
It's not all about web search results. You should compare the entire suite of search "products" before making posts like this in the future.

Just like Miguel said, the comparison doesn't take user experience into account. Bing wins hands down on that, especially on the image and video searches. It's a MUCH better search experience than Google's regardless of the accuracy of the results.
  • TheMarketingIntern · 6 months ago
Hm. Three searches for "The Marketing Intern," "Cubicle," and "Ham Sandwich" all turned up votes for Yahoo!, a service that I never use. Hmm. Maybe I will switch search engines -- to Yahoo!.
  • SEO Gurl · 6 months ago
That`s awesome. I did the blind test and got Yahoo all 3 times too! Go figure!
  • Oscar Godson · 6 months ago
I, as well, did a few tests and every time it was Yahoo!. I never use Yahoo! though! Maybe I should start to use it...
  • Scott K · 6 months ago
Count me in. I did three searches and chose the Yahoo results all three times. I ranked my results though and Bing came in second 2 out of the 3 times.

    Interesting.
  • Ferdinand · 6 months ago
One could argue that the UI of the search engine is nearly as important as the search results. I've found some of Bing's features (related searches, search history, biography, quotes, etc.) pretty compelling. It's ironic that BlindSearch, which was developed by a Microsoft employee, conceals this advantage.
  • Miguel Carrasco · 6 months ago
I like the test, however there are tons of problems with it, some of which you have already mentioned.

    1. Doesn't take the User Experience into account at all.
    2. Most people running the searches are Technical / SEO people that is not the typical user of the search engines.

I think those are two massive points. So while Bing in my opinion has by far the best user experience, and the best search site for mom and dad, high school students, parents, grandparents, and the general population, I still think Google returns search results that we have come to expect as technically savvy people.

Jury is still out.. going to be awesome to see the advancements in search now that there is competition again. Win or Lose, we will have Microsoft to thank for forcing Google to re-invest in their advertising heavy search engine.
  • dl · 6 months ago
one more time - the secret about bing is i...is in the silverlight hypervideo applications...they are going after the merger of TV and the web...with Xbox...they know the $ from ads based in video search are going to make search ads... look like child's play. but the web dev community is so limited in it's condescending view of other media and it's history they would not get that. oy.
  • miracLes · 4 months ago
  • Rebecca · 6 months ago
I voted for Bing 3 out of the 4 searches. They had the most relevant results higher up for each of my searches... interesting!
  • Dean · 6 months ago
Google still has the edge when it comes to spammy search terms (the usual - gambling/drugs etc).

I guess they just have considerably more experience.

On low value search terms I ended up voting Bing every time....
  • Zachary Collins · 6 months ago
I updated my websites description a while ago, and Bing still hasn't updated it in their search results. However, Google did within just a few days, if not one day.

    Thanks,

Microsoft Bing punting Bing as a "decision engine", which it clearly isn't, or certainly isn't any better than Google. Here's excerpt from a recent article of mine on the subject of Bing as a decision maker:

"Let's say I want to go Italy, so I type in: 'travel to Italy'. If I'm wanting to make decisions around that specific activity, then Bing is skipping a lot of initial steps and making assumptions. I might be a first time traveler. Bing knows at least where I'm from, in this case I'm in England, so that adds some geographic context to the mix. Yes, this context is reflected in the results, but not in how they're presented, which should be as a series of tasks related to making a decision.

As an example, in Europe, we need a EU (European Union) travel insurance card. It's not mandatory.

I can see a listing for the British Foreign Office (FCO), entitled: "Italy travel advice" so it would seem obvious to me to break this result out and give it special relevance, related to the activity of traveling to Italy.

Also, and obviously, I'd be needing flights, accommodation and transport to and from the airport, as well as exchange services for changing my money into Euros — none of these things are specifically grouped into categories, based around those very specific tasks."

This was just one example of how poor Bing is at actually helping me make an informed decision.
  • thePhantom* · 6 months ago
They should randomize the positions of the search results because the eye is used to reading left to right - they are more inclined to pick those further to the left - where Google is.

That's one factor that's not being internalized here - it's still biased.
  • Ben Parr · 6 months ago
They do randomize that. Check the last screenshot.
  • iTbay · 6 months ago
this does not take into account the real Time-Based Search Options as noted here http://mashable.com/2009/05/12/google-search-re... - this analysis to me is comparing grapes with grapes and not watermelons with watermelons.

    ~just another Google shareholder!
  • Juan · 6 months ago
I just did the experiment and I ended selecting evenly among the three. One thing to point is that in some searches I could tell which was Yahoo because of the listing of some of their sites like Yahoo Directory and Yahoo Travel in high rankings in the results; I don't see it as a bad thing and in fact those sites are relevant and useful.

    I love my Yahoo Finance.

This is a fantastic idea for a comparison! I am so surprised but Yahoo is getting the best results for me over 50% of the time. Bing the rest of the time and Google once! I will keep testing and I am sure it will even out a little but more but I am shocked!
  • sushant · 6 months ago
This is a comparison of the sites relevance. Bing's whole take has been on not only the relevance but also the presentation. so the above mentioned method by definition does not really compares the two search engines but only their relevance.
  • diane · 6 months ago
I have started using Bingo but to be honest I have not really seen any evidence as yet of how useful it is

  • Scott K · 6 months ago
I did a search for "iPhone 3G S". While the results may have updated since I ran the search, ONLY Yahoo had links to post-WWDC info about the new iPhone release.

    Relevancy and speed count.

Maybe Google does have a weakness. And Bing is exposing it:

I have to be blind to not see how much better Google is in most searches (by the way, I did use the blindsearch and was able to guess which results were Google each time).

I think Google understands the context of the search much better than Bing: http://blog.gadodia.net/bing-vs-google-no-fancy...

Very interesting... I chose google, yahoo, bing for my 3 most searched keywords... I'm not sure there's much difference in them really, what would be interesting is comparing the top 50 results from a million keywords... hmmm, i feel an experiment coming on...

Well, I took a look at bing and I noticed that it's nothing more than the old Live Search spiced up with pretty background images. The search results are ironically as innaccurate as the the TV commercials that show people with "search overload". I have to hand it to Microsoft though, they do have a pretty good marketing team but Google has a far superior search algorithym.
  • Don Toivola · 4 months ago
That is very interesting. I typed in three random keywords and each time I chose the one I felt had better results. Three times it was Google. It is very interesting to see the differences in results across the three.
  • John · 4 months ago
This blind search was neat but not very useful. I like simpler ones that just show me the results. I saw this random one on a forum that works too http://www.absolutjenius.com/search_compare.html

    Copyright explained

Copyright is a legal concept, enacted by governments, giving the creator of an original work of authorship exclusive rights to it, usually for a limited time, after which the work enters the public domain. Generally, it is "the right to copy", but also gives the copyright holder the right to be credited for the work, to determine who may adapt the work to other forms, who may perform the work, who may financially benefit from it, and other, related rights. It is an intellectual property form (like the patent, the trademark, and the trade secret) applicable to any expressible form of an idea or information that is substantive and discrete. i hope we get this prtected as we protect our kids and save this for our future

For days I have tried to get some hits from Bing but get absolutely nothing. I have advertised using the same key words as on Google. E.G. "Roman Coins", Greek Coins" and many others.
On Google I get on average 3000 imprints every day. On Bing I got 5 during two days.
After lengthy phone calls with Bing, I get the first explanation: Bing does not have enough searches for my keywords so my add will not show up. When I explain that if I search myself I get 5 imprints from other websites, nothing from mine. The explanation now changes to "You did not enter a high enough amount for each click". To get trafic I have to offer $1.00 or more. The 0.10 that I offered was not enough.
I will stay with Google. What use is Bing if your add never shows up?
  • H · 3 months ago
To me Bing is just a pretty picture and Google is simple and sleek. It is way better than Bing! I tired Bing once and ended up going to Google because i did not like Bing's results. and also who actually says i going to bing it? I like I am going to Google it. Google is a way better name then Bing!
