Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Google Me. No, Really!

  • Vivan Jayant · 7 months ago
So awesome. Too bad I can't do it because I can't verify :(.
  • kj subz · 7 months ago
My google profile link doesn't appear at the bottom of a google search of me (kj subz) either .. when i investigate there is some half-baked info about verifying my email id and when i try to do that it disallows me saying only non-google id's can be verified .. what's the scoop here .. strange no one else other than you and me seem to be complaining

Google Me, it sounds great and it works with this. I hope that I will be at the head of ZacharyTG, for that would be amazing. LOL.

I don't see why you feel that this will solve any problems associated with identity. I guess you are assuming that potential employers, dates, colleges, landlords, etc. will stop at the profile. If a profile is controlled by the person who's name I am researching, why should I consider this the definitive word on their reputation? If I was hiring someone, I'd want to know what others have said about them, and what they have said in a wide range of situations and sites. The profile would be the last thing I really cared about. I'd also want to check their references, so I would do a background check on all the names in their resume. As I wrote in a recent post on Google Alerts for job searching, this is an continual process that goes way beyond what the Google profile can address:

Rushed to sign up immediately and gave up all my information willingly. Hmmm.. I guess I made the decision that convenience trumps privacy. The benefits are apparent right now. The drawbacks are murkier and unforeseeable. Hopefully I won't regret this decision in the years to come... Don't Be Evil, Google!
  • fun22watcher · 7 months ago
I would be more worried about the identity thieves who will scroll through your profile in order to determine your history and people you know so they can more easily impersonate you. Only give the info you know cannot be used against you by the devious..
  • Patrick Courtney · 7 months ago
Excellent. Now I can differentiate myself from Joel Patrick Courtney, the serial killer and rapist who is raping my google search results.
  • Adam Ostrow · 7 months ago
haha, good for you, that must've sucked :)
  • Patrick Courtney · 7 months ago
    indeed it did.
  • stevesidea · 7 months ago
would not be hard for them to morph this into something facebookesque
  • Kbodnar32 · 7 months ago
good feature too bad it isn't crazy important as my SERP for Kipp Bodnar is pretty non competitive.
  • Ef Rodriguez · 7 months ago
Very cool. It's nice to have a little control over what people see. Emphasis on "a little."
  • Tim Entwisle · 7 months ago
Thanks for the post. I will take the advice and get cracking with it! Regards

Good news! I've been trying to be #1 for TJ Kelly (http://www.google.com/search?q=tj+kelly) for a long time now. Good thing I have the Google Profile for my name. Thanks Mashable.

I think this is an incredibly smart move from Google. Probably won't be long before Google has a proper social media network.

Will sort out my profile in the morning.
  • Jack · 7 months ago
this is smart. they needed people to create profiles so that their single sign-on service would have some juice against facebook connect... why you use google ID when you aren't really connecting to any sort of network (a la Facebook Connect)? real smart in my opinion.

When will this feature be live?
  • Jack · 7 months ago
so, I just tried this out, and there seems to be a few bugs/issues.

    1. when I'm logged out of my google profile, and search for my name, then my profile listing goes away. I can only see my google profile when I'm logged in and I search for myself.

    2. I had a colleague search for me on his computer (while I was logged in). My profile did not display in the bottom result. What's the point of this if only I can see the listing when I'm already signed into my google profile?

Also, what's to keep businesses from setting up accounts for relevant and highly utilized search terms that aren't actually their businesses name?
  • Miguel Alvarez · 7 months ago
Too bad it only works when you are signed in to your gmail account.
  • Rachel · 7 months ago
That was a cool feature until I read the comments and logged out of my account and the profile links disappeared. I guess it's not too much longer to say "Google me - while you're signed into Google." :)

Google has finally figure out a way to combine their search engine with social networking. Now we can protect our identity and hopefully take back some of our piracy by having some kind of control when people Google Us. Also if they can integrate their searchWiki with this gadget
we take the spot as #1 in search and social networking.

Just created my own Google Profile. Pretty cool. I'm excited to see what this leads to.
  • Daniela_Asaro · 7 months ago
Pretty cool...I also use Naymz (http://www.naymz.com)...but need to update that as well... What I like about Namyz is I can see where a person is from if they click the link ;)
  • John So · 7 months ago
Ha, I don't really need this service, because I got some really famous guy who shares the same name as me.
  • Jasper · 7 months ago
Great feature of Google. Businesses could create a profile and create awareness.

"This is going to be a welcome addition for lots of people, especially those who aren’t necessarily happy with what links Google has for them on the first page of results". I don't agree on this, as Google places the profiles at the bottom of the result page...
  • kenhty · 7 months ago
I've just created my profile. Check it out! http://www.google.com/profiles/kenhty
Still thinking about the bio section.

Searching people is becoming common and Google might be a good way to find people... this could steal some traffic from the Facebooks, LinkedIns, etc.
  • Cat (UK) · 7 months ago
Just spent ages trying to get this to work then checked the original Google post to discover it's only for US searches. Doh!
  • Charlotte Wray · 7 months ago
People search site http://www.yasni.com have been doing this for ages, and to a better standard. Just goes to show, slap a google logo on it and people will go mad, without even thinking about alternatives!
  • Erol · 7 months ago
    Hey,

    Can't get this to work!
Is this service available when browsing to the U.S. Google?
I'm out of Google's first wave of innovation avalanche, i.e Europe, so I can't try this out, it seems? I can add myself but I can't find anybody through typical search.
The magical profile box below the search results won't appear, whenever I type in some of the example names provided in the introduction page.

    What am I doing wrong?
  • Tom Freeman · 7 months ago
Wow! This is clearly the first tentative steps in the direction of a Google social network. Smart move though and clearly will get a big take up as people try and have some level of control over the personal reputation management.
  • Mikes · 7 months ago
just updated my profile and searched for "me" LOL!
  • Bruce C Ziebarth · 7 months ago
I signed up for Google Profiles. I like the fact that you can add links to all your other social networking profiles. It allows you to make a "one stop shop" for your information. Thank you for the posting.

This was a great tip for me
