Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Google Maps Navigation Becomes Reality on the Android

  • Error 601 · 1 month ago
Android 2.0 is REALLY going to give the iPhone some competition. Especially with all of the sweet hardware coming out that will run it. The Droid looks cool, but I still prefer the sleekness and durability of the iPhone, possible only with a virtual on-screen keyboard (which is just fine after you get used to it).

So... I wonder if/when this will make it to the iPhone. Does Google have motivation to do so? Other than dominating the maps market even further?

Go Android! I'm thinking about switching to Android after switching back to a BlackBerry from the iPhone which replaced by BlackBerry which I switched to from a Windows Mobile device.

any preference? blackberry or iphone? i have an iphone and i'm thinking of switching to a blackberry or android because I want an actual keypad for easier typing..

but i'm so used to the iphone interface!
  • r0cketman22 · 1 month ago
There's nothing better than the iPhone interface, for sure!

I'm going to be trading my iPhone for a BlackBerry Tour and possibly getting an iPod touch for all the apps I've collected of the year or so, haha.

Don't get me wrong, I love the iPhone's software keyboard, however, nothing beats REAL keys when typing.

    'Nothing beats the iPhone interface'
'Nothing beats REAL keys when typing'

This seems a bit confused. Can you clarify?

That seems amazing to have Street View available for navigation. Pretty incredible when I think back a few years and having a flip phone was the height of technology!

Cool opportunity for businesses to get found offline also.

*online. The phone still uses the internet. #fail

    offline = "IRL"
The exciting thing here is easily locating nearby businesses while you're out and about. [really snide comment redacted] #gettingTheBigPictureFail

If Google could implement some augmented reality into it I would hurt in my pants

I hope they do some real-time alerts for traffic congestion and re-routes and also some expert learning and integration with Google Calender. Imagine if all the Bay Area commuters got an instant alert the Bay Bridge was shut this AM. What a difference it could make. The future is bright for Android.

Blast, I want this on the iPhone... That is what I really am wondering.

Apple and AT&T you suck, stop fighting and get over it. Google probably had hard feelings now. Oh, the maturity....

It's not only for Droid (yes it will be first phone to have 2.0) but wait until Jan/Feb when 2.0 is released for all Android OS Cell phones

I can't wait until Google Maps starts incorporating 3rd party databases like red light cameras and speed camers. No big mapping company has done this well yet.

Any plans to integrate live weather data into the navigation functionality?
  • Azul7 · 1 month ago
It would be really interesting to incorporate elements of Google Social Search into it. For example, a feature that could be enabled (or turned off) that would indicate restaurants along your route that is rated highly or commented positively by people in your social network.

"Google Maps Navigation is initially available in the United States."

Sigh. Yet another Geo-location based App that isn't global from day one.
  • andeeeuk · 1 month ago
This does look excellent, very impressed by the demo. Though they have only mentioned that it is available on the Andriod phones and will become available on the iPhone. Is there going to be a release for the Blackberry?!?!?!

As im due a new phone soon and would love to stick with the blackberry :)

Way to go, Google!!! You're just planning to take over the world now, aren't you? Slowly, but surely putting everyone else out of business.
    I am a fan!

I believe the Google Maps Navigation App will put Driod at or above anything that the Iphone has to offer its user base. Pretty Amazing app. Kudos to Google for releasing on the new Droid phone for free.
