Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Google Loses Search Market Share … to Yahoo?!

  • Calgary Real Estate · 3 months ago
You might want to edit that YAHOO increase (add a decimal to the 11% growth you're showing) :)

Eagle eyes. Although, the article author should've spotted this mathematical error.

WHY DO YOU - GOOGLENTOLOGIST - THINK that google recently changed the ads position in their page?

Why? are you to smart to hype avery google-farth product launched or dreamed about launched, but you are blind to see the impact of MICROSOFT recent announcements!

    GO BING!

I don't agree with (or don't understand) the premise that it doesn't matter to Microsoft who takes from Google's market share. Can you elaborate?
  • Brad Phillips · 3 months ago
I think he means that Google is going after Microsoft's core markets, so as long as they are crushed, and Microsoft's core markets are safe again, Microsoft will be happy. Microsoft will of course be happier if they take Google's searchers away and they secure their core markets again, because they'll be the leader in online advertising as well.
  • brandonhess · 3 months ago
Agreed. Microsoft wants to hit Google's revenue stream so it has less room to stretch into Microsofts bread'n'butter (OS/Software). As Google pulls the vast majority of it's revenue from search advertising, losing market share/usage equates to less revenue from it's search advertising.

I bet it had to do with Michael Jackson. I'm serious...think about the demographics.

Can't wait to see how this plays out!

Increase in search, in my opinion, was primarily due to Yahoo re-launching their front page and people checking it out and then trying the search results. I don't see Bing or Yahoo as a threat.

2 Big issues for me in search right now

    1) All the leaders that Google is losing will eventually hurt it.

    2) Yahoo/Bing don't even register social media traffic compared to Google. It blows me away how I can rank 4th or 5th on page 1 in Google via my Twitter Account for my name but not even be on the first two pages on Bing/Yahoo :) I'll get a blog and SEO optimize it, fixing that problem, but it really highlights the differences in the search engines.

I kinda agree, the same happened to me as well. Plus I tried creating a separate Twitter account with a different username but same name, and it popped up in a while on Google as well.

There are a lot of people named Dan Ross, you are not the most important, cry about it or get over it.
  • Manjak · 3 months ago
@ Brad - You're a whole lot less important to mankind now..
  • trenoops · 3 months ago
Wait, so what are you saying more [people who like Michael jackson] use yahoo than google. What demographic, specifically?
  • Santosh Rajan · 3 months ago
It will be interesting to see if Google figures go up again in August. If it does then we can attribute this to the Micheal Jackson effect. Mainly due to people who are not regular searchers, but hang around Yahoo for other purposes (email, chat etc) running a search.

Jealousy in Relationships. This is a sensitive subject for some. Jealousy will destroy a relationship quickly. It is one emotion/feeling that is unacceptable. It is like a drug that creates demons, violent/abusive behaviors and paranoid sobs.
I am sorry, but I know who I go home with. When you are in the public eye, and have an image that people perceive, flirtation is acceptable in fact its kind of cute and especially when you know you are going home with that person.
Jealousy is for people with no confidence. social skills or personality. I am sorry not acceptable.

OH NO! GOOGLE IS LOSING BIG TIME!!!!

LOOK! THEY LOST 1.7%!!!! NOW YAHOO IS ONLY LIKE 40% AWAY!

Seriously people, let's be honest here, this is not a big deal. And there is no competition as one of the other posters said..

Google still dominates and I am sure they could careless about losing 1.7% unless it's continual.

Nielsons numbers are complete garbage for the most part and no one takes them seriously. In the dating space they often show 1 page landing sites as the top dating sites in given markets.

How you people cheerlead for googlentology is disgusting!

Bing was the BEST thing that happened this year, and the reaction from google is good for everybody, new features and products being introduced.

I hope bing takes close to 50% of market share from google, then we will see constant innovation from both camps!
  • microevilsoft · 3 months ago
oh please go away bing and yahoo

With rush moves, i don't think that anyone can compete with Google. First the false rumors about MS want to take over yahoo, then the Bing and now the Yahoo and MSN cooperation. All these, looks like butter in Google's bread. Ill only comment the first part for not making you board. Who could possibly believe, as long as a brilliant businessman like Bill Gates is alive, that he would pay all that huge amount of money, for the dieing Yahoo. For the first time in my life with computers (started with MS-DOS 3.30) i think that the big capital started a war against Microsoft. I like Google very much and use it for my searches but the numbers you mention are far from surprising me. By the way, some stupid journalists here in Greece, write that Bill Gates wants to purchase, the Onassis island "Scorpio" which Athena Onassis wants to sell. Unbelievable stupid lies. No wonder that traditional press is dieing....

Slow down Calgary, Diversified and speaking with full confidence that microsoft, yahoo and google all have a big piece of the business. Competition is good and it improves the quality and technology that the consumer gets to benefit from.

Again, I find I use search engines as to the means of what I am searching for. Like any information/search source, each has its own benefits. I search as to what I know each will provide me with the shortest time and with the most convenience. Yahoo tends to keep me informed with US, Google with global. The numbers do not reveal the true useage.

However, it will not be possible for Yahoo Search or Bing to beat Google Search in its own game. Bing is basically a Google-clone, using more or less the same or similar search technology or algorithm. Google has already got about 10 years' lead over its competitors in that technology by having assimilated huge database of searched pages and their rankings. Using the same or similar technology, Bing cannot suddenly surpass Google. Bing, or for that matter any other search engine, can beat Google only by creating some new innovative search algorithm which changes the way people conduct search or which changes the way the search results are produced and which can catch people's imagination. This is what had been done by Google about a decade back - creating an innovative search engine. Somebody has to create such genius new idea to change the rules of game. Till that time Google will rule the searches.

Despite the mathematical errors, these are great statistics. Yahoo/MSN is gaining ground quicker that I had anticipated. I wonder if these stats are largely from first time users of Bing due to their monumental marketing campaign. In short, will the recent surge in Yahoo/MSN stats start to trend back in Google's favor?
