Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Google Grows Up; Removes Beta Tag from Gmail and Other Apps

  • Andrew · 5 months ago
I never thought I'd see Gmail out of beta.

You mentioned the use of "alpha" by developers. Remember when Flickr used to say they were in "gamma?" For me, that's when the beta tag really lost all meaning.

hah, I was thinking of Flickr actually when I was writing that but couldn't recall what they used ... you're right, Gamma, lol
  • Chris K · 5 months ago
You do realize that using 'gamma' was an inside joke to the photography world...

A lot of improvements for Gmail the past few days or weeks. What I really want to see is serious improvements for Gtalk - the stand-alone app and not the gmail integration (which is pretty much useless anyway).

They're in the position to dominate the Jabber network or at least be the leading carrier, and they're not doing much about it. I commend the Chrome team for competing with Safari, we'll probably see soon Chrome being the carrier of WebKit :p Gtalk when will you?

What's the meaning of 'Beta' for free products??? Could never understand why Google Betas everything.. They don't make any money selling software or services (in comparison to the tons of $$ they make off search &ads), so why bother?

You people know that there is hell of difference between GMAIL and Chrome. Chrome is just an application which you will need to surf website. But Gmail and its features are K2. There are many applications along with Gmail which you use. Each and every application needs its own maintenance and service. That's why Gmail took years to get out of How you can compare Chrome with Other products of Google? Use your brain. I never know that Mashable can have such dumb writer.
