Can someone answer me this question.
What is the advantage of using this over let say a light-weight Linux distro or other 'WebOS' systems?
  • Josh · 3 months ago
Doesn't look too bad, if it is real.

    Am I in 1995?
  • Mok · 3 months ago
couldn't agree more with GoogleAD$OS. Looks like Windows 95, but there's arguably many things that are different (not just the OS, but the world is different from 95).
  • Paul · 3 months ago
I wouldn't say it looks like Win 95. Yes it is simple, however it still looks modern. That is the way Google does things, uncluttered. It looks good in my opinion.

  • Al · 3 months ago
Exactly what I thought. I remember GEOS and this looks like it,
  • johan · 3 months ago
To bad Google dont support this OS instead if they want a new OS: http://www.haiku-os.org/

    (To be fully BeOS-compatible)
  • sonofsquidward · 3 months ago
I agree. The first thing I thought of was BeOS. I ran it on A PowerComputing Mac clone back in 1997....
  • the Cappy · 3 months ago
I remember BeOS. I coveted those machines when they first came out. But I'd just left the computer science department and entered med school, and I didn't have time to fiddle with new tech. I figured in a couple of years, which it became more mainstream, I'd have one.

    Then....

It's so simple that it really is revolutionary! Just a bunch of web app launchers for frequently used/favorite web apps & a lightning fast browser for all the rest.

    IMAGINE:
    - instant boot & fast runtime,
    - super long battery life,
    - always on operation (like a mobile phone),
    - no data backups & restores,
    - low/no software installation & maintenance,
    - no virus, spyware, etc. scanning,
    - automatic OS updates (all devices "globally" are always running the latest version),
    - flash-drive installation, for portable work environments,
    - ability to run on any device (smartphones, netbooks, notebooks, desktops, eReaders, game consoles, photo frames, carputers, …),
    - ability to run on any CPU architecture (x86, ARM, MIPS, …),
    - ...

    FOR DEVELOPERS:
    - web apps that behave & perform like desktop apps (offline use, 3D graphic acceleration, etc.), through the use of HTML5/Gears, Native Client, WebGL/O3D, BONDI, etc.
    - web app improvements or bug fixes that can be propagated to millions/billions of users instantaneously.
    - web apps that can be offered for free/sale/subscription, to any user located anywhere in the world.

    This is REALLY exciting!

Well for a netbook OS, the screen size (and thus the resolution and size of the items on screen) is very big.
    Wouldn't like the semi-minimized browser on a 10 incher, as I can't see a maximize button.
  • Jonny · 3 months ago
Hmmmmm amyone could have created that :p... Linux is soo easy to use & customize these days soo anyone can create there own desktop / operating system...

I'm, unfortunately, going to have to say that I am not going to buy that these are real screenshots of Chrome OS. Having spoken with a few people at Google not very long ago, I was under the impression that they literally had not even started working on Chrome OS yet and would not have anything to show for a while.

I'll be pleasantly surprised if this is real, but otherwise I'm going to ignore this.
  • magnoliasouth · 3 months ago
I'll agree that this is probably a fake, as it's very early in the process, but I'll disagree that Google hasn't even begun working on an OS yet. They wouldn't officially announce one if they haven't even tried to do it. In other words, it has to be created to even see if it's workable or not. Sure, Google employees would deny that but it's fairly obvious - from a business standpoint - that they do have one in the making.
  • 1stAngel · 3 months ago
True or not, its cool, and if mocked up, perhaps Google should take him on LOL

I think it looks like crap and I can't imagine using it. I really like most google aps, but not Chrome as a browser and if those pics are the actual OS, then hell no.
  • jamesdotlane · 3 months ago
It seems unlikely that the OS that has just really started to be talked about, is already in a BETA phase; and without us seeing anything from an ALPHA release?

I'm not close enough to Google to say either way with any real degree of certainty, but this doesn't really ring true.

That said, I would love it to be out very soon; I, like most, am very excited to be an early adopter. I'm already all about the webapps, so this should be an easy adoption for me.

Okay it's absurd to think that google decided they're going to revolutionize the 'OS' market by:
reproducing and inverting a mac os desktop.
By simply providing integrated shortcuts web apps.

    Trust me it's 100% fake.

A linux kernel, with kde basic environment, as it was initially told. fair enough and dosent look stupid to me at all. Its small, fast, light in resources, free and specialized for the internet user. The screenshots are just a way of customizing the desktop and i don't think is significance is so big.
  • Craig · 3 months ago
No way Google would do this . . . it's hard as hell to use a dock like that (a similar dock comes installed on some Dell PCs) with Google's chrome browser. When you try to switch tabs the dock keeps getting in the way.

No, I don't think Chrome OS will have windows.
  • Avatar X · 3 months ago
Really?, that is you final answer?. Then how exactly you are supposed to use the SSB concept (built into Chrome from the start) and Google Gadgets without windowing?.

Unless you are being sarcastic. then just carry on.
  • Miguel · 3 months ago
Think outside the box man. Don't sound like it's impossible to build an OS without windows, or that it's a radical idea when, in the first place, people never thought of windows before they existed. I am not following Chrome OS' development but am saying that it would be really cool if they came up with something different than what we are used too, and am hoping they do.
  • Avatar X · 3 months ago
Looks like actual Google Design. it also makes sense because the bar at the top and tray bar at the bottom can be seen even if the browser is at full view as if it was intended all along. That makes it plausible. the bleed, in this case the empty desktop background/void is also accurate based on Google Chrome design because the desktop (in their view) is only mean to be used by "Chrome Modules" A.K.A SSB Windows.

So if it is a Fake mockup my regards to the guy. it is very factual to the Chrome Browser design and Google design.

  • GSH · 3 months ago
People who say that looks great are such fanboys! it's just the Chrome window over a blueish desktop screen...

Is there a battery status on the bottom side?? how? does it have dual monitor support already?
  • ejimford · 3 months ago
Hmm... First question is: where do my files go? I see Web (Chrome), Gmail, RSS (Reader), Maps, News Calendar, YouTube. Not even Google Docs in the main App Launcher?

I think that Google needs to sort out the following before they can launch this thing:

    * Full OTA syncing (like Android) for offline use. This means for ALL applications that come bundled (Gmail, Calendar, READER, etc.) and the ability for third-party apps to do the same.

    * Some sort of GDrive solution. This has been rumored for a long time, and I really don't understand why Google hasn't done it yet. Storage is cheap... There are millions of people out there waiting to store their stuff in the cloud, easily, portably, and seamlessly in a way that integrates with other Google products (eg. "attach from GDrive" in Gmail). They'll happily look at ads if it means they can have limitless storage online. Heck, they'll probably even let you analyze their data so you can target ads to them based on their mp3 and movie collection.

    * Some sort of media solution, and don't tell me its YouTube. I want to watch DIVX files or MOV or MP4s or ISOs or whatever the heck I want... DVD discs too, if I have the drive. I think the simplest solution to this is a local installation of VLC Media Player bundled with the OS. The VLC team have done an amazing job over the years, and deserve to be integrated into a project like this.

    * I need a way to be able to create mp3 playlists that I can access anywhere by logging in... A web based mp3 player shouldn't be too hard, and could be totally integrated with the GDrive. (And I actually think that Google could out-design iTunes if they put their mind to it).

If they can do the above and integrate the platform with Android... Then I think we've seen the future of the Operating System here.

As far as the design... I like its google-y sparseness. But if they're smart, they'll make the interface easy to customize so I can make it look like whatever I want (Just imagine the HUGE number of themes that would appear).

    My two cents!
  • Rick · 3 months ago
Yeah, that's what the world needs -- another operating system. That's what the market is really clamoring for.

I just don't get it -- but I'm probably not the intended audience. :)
  • abdulaziz · 3 months ago
i think google with no doubt is excel in the web and its applications but when they get into the users desktops they will change every thing to web centric which is drawback for those who don't have internet connection all the time. I believe that Google should focus on their web applications and keep the OS field for the other parties!

in addition Google wanna monopolize the web and keep us stuck with their applications (they have great applications I know) which will decrease the competency between Google and other companies (exactly like Microsoft and their office suite).

  • Rick · 3 months ago
Google is getting out of it's area of strength by getting into operating systems. This is a waste of resources, or at best, a Webkit/Android test lab. It will be to desktops what SeaMonkey is to Web browsers -- interesting, but only holding the interest of <1% of the market.
  • techpops · 3 months ago
When was the last time a company with this much money tried to do an OS? It's been the same lineup for over a decade now. Microsoft, Apple and hiding in the corner, Linux.

There is probably good reasons why you would not want to try and create a new OS for the desktop market but Google are being extremely smart about it. They are going after a tiny market first, the Netbooks. They are incredibly popular right now and we seem to be heading for a future where an ultra light computer is the computer of choice to take on the move.

So Google have a great way to get their foot in the door here. Go after a small market where Microsoft is not at its best. If they can make a success of that, crossing over to the desktop will be easier are more of the mainstream will be aware Google is an option. This is most certainly a very long term play for them. I can't see this going anywhere for the next 2-3 years but it is worthwhile as its the ultimate next step for Google. Control the web and then your desktop.
  • techpops · 3 months ago
If Chrome OS has a UI that is anything less than visually stunning, it will fail. This looks awful and has to be fake.

I'd imagine for a long time the work being done will be under the hood with lots of brainstorming on how to present that. So screenshots right now, even if they were real, I can't believe would show anything of the final look of the OS.

Since the focus of this OS is for the web and small screens. I'm thinking Google will be trying to look at forgetting all the conventions the "desktop" has setup over the years. The iPhone seems to have the right idea but those icons have to be very low res. Chrome OS could allow a bit more detail for an icons size and maybe present it better. In 3D? Animated? can't wait to find out just where Google goes with this.

Yeah, it's fine-looking, but I have two problems with it, which I say probably invalidate it.
    1. It says "Developers beta". Okay, let's say they keep the lower case "beta" of other products, but "Developers"? It seems like it would be "Developer beta" or "Developer's beta", but the former seems more likely.
After typing that first point, I suppose it does seem a bit nitpicky, but on to the next point.
    2. How are you supposed to exit out of Chrome? Let's say you have three tabs open, and you want to close it; can you?

This could be authentic, but I don't know if that's very likely. Hopefully if it is real, that's an indication that it will be out soon!

There is no chance this is real. Come on. It looks like Xubuntu with any one of the thousands of dock-like applications, plus the Chromium browser. It wouldn't take anyone very long to create a theme like this for pretty much any desktop environment. Gnome, KDE, Xfce, whatever...

And a "Developers beta"? Where was the alpha?

If this is Google Chrome OS, its a MAJOR let down and a huge waste of their hype machines efforts. I'd rather just recreate this in Xubuntu in a few minutes.

I certainly don't want it to look like this. Why are there a bunch of wasted screen space when screen real-estate is precious these days particularly with the targeted niche of Netbooks? I am very much looking forward to Chrome OS so long as they have learned the lessons of short-timers like BeOS and don't yell at me Linux.

It will need to be very compatible with existing hardware, and most importantly, software to get a user base fast.

So far Google have made winners out of almost everything they have done so fingers crossed...

    :-)

Compatible with hardware? It's meant to be a MID/Netbook OS for which it's specially adapted to run a limited set of devices for like Android not a OS for normal desktop use for commodity hardware. This problem don't exist, they will just write every closed source driver needed for a specific device and ship. Most devices will probably not even run x86 processors but ARM. Software is meant to be normal webapps and webapps specially catered to Chrome OS.

    Love it!

Looks like an early development copy still not adapted for use on MIDs and Netbooks.

It will basically be Maemo or Moblin but built around Chrome and Google services instead of Gecko/Firefox and linux apps. So it still has a long way to go if that's all it is right now.

It really does remind me of 1995! Even though Google does minimalist, this is just TOO minimalist for me!

It looks good and actually quite stylish (anyone agree with me in thinking it has a certain elegance?).
Though it does look the part (maybe) I really really hope this isn't it. I couldn't live without offline apps.
That said, I couldn't live without the internet either....
But Google Chrome is the best browser for me. An operating system built around it is genius.

I love Google and all of its products. And now with an OS (free!!) looking different and better than all known uptodate..., this is a wonderfull news! There's only one thing I want to ask to developers, none of Windows versions let us see seconds in the traybar clock: 15:20:05 and we always have to install a third party app to have it displayed. Is it so hard to do? or it's so insignificant that nobody takes into consideration? I consider it's the full format of time so maybe it's important, at least for me. My best regards and congrats.

looks exactly as IBM OS2 back in early 90`s.
  • Ed · 2 months ago
To me, from the screenshots it looks like the whole OS will be basically Chrome Web Browser.
    That is a good thing.

Just thought you should know guys, it's all FAKE. YES! FAKE... Be patient. The damn thing will be release one of these days.
  • lewismckay · 1 month ago
Blatantly fake. We all no Google are simple but not to that extent! Chrome internet explorer (I'm using it right now, is a hit! Google simply do not have the experience to pull it off and if they did it would be less simple.
