Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Google Caffeine: A Detailed Test of the New Google

  • Brian Yerkes · 3 months ago
Nice work. It is definitely a lot faster. I just posted an article on Google's new search engine, looking at some details of the local business results map http://www.brianyerkes.com/new-google-search-en...

BING? Compare it to BING? Is BING a search, because so far the old webcrawler in the early 90s had more return/results!!
  • visualthings · 3 months ago
Considering that they're kind of new - although they are using the msn improved engine - they done a pretty good job. I use Google anyway :)
  • Jim R. · 3 months ago
Bing is great. I have been using it for 3 weeks now and it replaced Google as my default search tool. Try to search image of someone, you will be impressed.
  • Marius · 2 months ago
Bing, just like Yahoo, is only for English search.
For example, I'm Lithuanian, and searching for some popular keyword is much better on Google. Bing and Yahoo gives 4 of 10 top results English pages, which has only exchange link in the footer of the page and nothing else about that word.
  • smk436 · 1 month ago
I like Bing quite a bit, but I don't know if its good enough to replace google for me.

More results isn't necessarily good. Esspecially when most of those results are likely to be spam. As of right now Bing is much better than Google. The relevancy is incredible. Google Caffeine may be Google's way of fixing this problem. However as it stands now Bing is on a new level, regardless who uses what more. It is hard to deny how correct those Bing commercials are.

Its not about how many millions of results search engines provide (359.000.000 is really bad) give me just 1. The one I am looking for.
  • sikku · 3 months ago
Click the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button in google.
  • magnoliasouth · 3 months ago
I don't think that's the point. The higher number of results is a bad choice when comparing search engines. Why? Because now you're getting results that are definitely not relevant. The point of search is finding what IS relevant. If I Google "how to clean antique bottles" I don't need millions of results. I a few good articles that explains it well. More results equals more junk that isn't relevant and shouldn't be a result. A good search won't need to give you junk.
  • sikku · 3 months ago
I do agree that higher no of results is not good, but Google is just not for people like us. A person who is doing research work might need more and more... So if one search engine is giving him more results it means there is something more to know.
  • Eruaran · 3 months ago
So, you want the search engine to make more decisions for you eh ? You mean like a.. uhmm... "decision engine" ? Yes, we know where that leads...
  • Jay McCormack · 3 months ago
Can't help thinking that the speed might have something to do with the fact that it's barely being used. I must admit though that it seems VERY quick to render.
  • niubi · 3 months ago

I don't see how speed is that important when we are talking fractions of a second. The biggest obstacle for most people will be their own computer speed and internet connection.

    So whats the big deal?
  • Ben Parr · 3 months ago
You'd be surprised. This is a big reason why: http://news.cnet.com/8301-10784_3-9954972-7.html

A tenth of a second can make all the difference.

  • allofcraigs.com · 3 months ago
i didn't see much improvement, however, the holy grail is real-time results. That would be huge for sites like mine, who use google custom search http://allofcraigs.com
  • Suezanne · 3 months ago
I'd like the ability search using a starting and ending range of dates.
  • Jason M · 3 months ago
Google already allows you to do this. In the light blue bar at the top of the SERP there is a plus icon and a link that says 'more options'. Click the link and different options appear down the left hand side of the page. You can choose to refine the search results by a custom date range.
  • Keaty · 3 months ago
How d'you know Google didn't just divide the search time by 2, before presenting it. Who could possibly tell.
  • sikku · 3 months ago
I think you did not notice one more difference.
In the normal search we have some link like

Cached - Similar - (a comment image) (a promote image) (a remove image)

Whereas in the new search engine we dont have the last 3 images (It can be seen in the images you have provided). But there is one more link like

    Cached - Similar - Filter

Filter is a new link, I donno what is the use of it. It gives a suggestion to use * as wildcard.
Well there are lot of difference in the search results. But if you search for those keywords which are constant for example I searched "Allama Iqbal" and both returned almost similar results in the first page....
  • Andrew · 3 months ago
It's nice to know that Bing ignores your personal site as well-- here l thought they just hated me. Does anyone know why they do this? I have a pretty unique name that doubles as my url and comes up first in Google. Bing, however, completely ignores it, along with my Twitter, Facebook, and blog (all first page results on Google). In fact, aside from my LinkedIn profile, Bing results are all related to my time as a student journalist (two years ago) and a soccer team I haven't been on in as long. Granted, these results are more "official" than a personal website or a social network, but in a world where search engines are replacing phonebooks and resumes, and real -time results are increasingly important, I don't see how Bing or Bing users benefit from a system that ignores my personal homepage and contact info in favour of a concert review l wrote in 2007.

If this were limited to me, l would write it off as my own irrelevance. But l have the same problem searching for small businesses and local bands, who have websites Bing ignores. Maybe it's because I'm in Canada. I just fail to see any advantages to Bing, and it boggles my mind they are gaining at the expense of Google. Anyone?
  • magnoliasouth · 3 months ago
    Agreed!
  • John K Levin · 3 months ago
I tried Ben Parr on Bing (without the quotes) and it brought up your tweets as well. But they don't bring up your home page. Perhaps people looking for you are more interested in your articles on Mashable than on your personal site? :-)

Personally, for this search, I like Bing > New Google.

Yνῶθι σεαυτόν - thine own self thou must know. Narcissism aside, if you have never performed an ego search, then you have no idea how your digitally projected self is perceived by incoming outsiders. That knowledge may be useful for managing your own image.

  • Shitij Nigam · 3 months ago
Question: How does an increased number of results make Bing better than Google? O_o
I mean, I thought search was about relevancy and not numbers. And in any case, people don't scroll through all the 1 million results or so, only the first 50 to a maximum, maybe 100 if you stretch it. Plus, just out of curiosity, Google omits certain search results. Were they included?

  • Nicole · 3 months ago
I'll wait to see if new Google is faster when it has all the users actually doing the millions of searches a day. Who knows if they are even searching the same database. In development, we often have a backup/restore to work from rather than production, so nothing gets messed up, so all the millions of people searching may not be hitting the same database as the sandbox. We'll see, though. I thought Google was fast before, so not sure it matters to me, anyway. :)

this will surely make yahoo and microsoft make sign up more deals even with AOL , TWITTER , REDIFF , and 100 others ,sttilll cant equal GOOGLE !
  • Double · 3 months ago
the amount of hits say nothing about the index. the new and old google even use probably the same...

that bing gives more means it sucks harder, it gives more unrelevant items...
  • gibs · 3 months ago
It will only be tested during time, so Bing is out of the picture...
I think that Google will continue to be the number 1 engine for many years, with all the products that people are developing to complete the surfing experience we will have a great ride.
BTW one of my favorites is SimilarWeb, check it out www.similarweb.com

Try the unquoted search "gummy dog" on both old and new. The new claims to return more results, but keep paging thru them and you will find the old peters out at Results 791 - 793 of about 556,000 for gummy dog. (2.82 seconds) while the new stops at Results 471 - 480 of about 669,000 for gummy dog. (0.56 seconds). And many of the results returned by Caffeine are foreign language pages.
  • Dustin · 3 months ago
Your speed test clearly isn't very substantial. Go to Google's "old" search and do an identical search for the same term multiple times and it will vary from around 0.05-0.2 It has nothing to do with the new engine. For the accuracy portion, you might want to try comparing something that would actually make sense ie, something specific where you know what page you were looking for. Simply searching your name is going to bring up damn near identical results on any search engine. Also, having just the number of results rise doesn't mean anything about the overall index size. It could easily just be picking fewer or more results from the same pool. Quit spitting out bogus comparisons.
  • Andrei · 3 months ago
"New Google is FAST: It often doubled the speed of Google classic." - that's so not relevant at this stage - first of all, you don't know the hardware set-up for this beta version. Secondly, do you think it may have something to do with the fact that "old Google" is answering millions of queries every second? Anyway, comparing response times in this manner has little if no relevancy.
  • Skip · 3 months ago
I'm confused. The poor grammar that frequently shows up is one thing, but in 4. Index Size, where Bing wins ... How is that when New=359,000,000 Old=51,000,000 and Bing=230,000,000. Lets take out the same number of "0"s and we get New=359, Old=51 and Bing=230 ... so yes, Bing beats the old, but when id 230 beat 359? So sure, his name got a better result on Bing, but Dog didn't ... So we ignore one result in favor of another and call it good?
  • Matt · 3 months ago
I think the temporal relevance subject is quite interesting, as it's something that all search engines seem to be completely lacking in. For example, when Michael Jackson was breathing his final breaths, I took that as an opportunity to query various search engines using his name as the search term (I was incredibly saddened by the news also, I feel I should point out!). As it happened, the ONLY sources that reporting him as critically ill were Human-edited websites, such as TMZ and BBC. These stories were not being raked by Google at anything like real time, which I found VERY suprising. I think when he was announced dead, Google were still reporting his London concerts as it's latest news.
  • Chris R · 3 months ago
For whatever reason I would like to see Bing do better. I don't feel comfortable with Google having so much of the market share.

I am not saying whther Google is god or bad. I am just saying that most people's comparison criteria smell of mindless rat-race. You declare that the Google is better because it is fast. Does it really matter whether your results come back in .25 seconds or .12 seconds? And does it matter whether Google has indexed 3 million pages with dog or half that many?

The massive media blow out against Google because Yahoo and Bing and merging has caused a lot of Hype for Microsoft. But what is the Hype exactly and why does anyone really think that Google can be unseated as the Search King that it is.

You can see the Difference right away when you pull up Google.com or Bing.com. Google has always maintained the simplicity of just giving you a search box, Bing on the other hand obviously hasn't learned it's lesson. By Adding news feeds about mundane facts on the bottom I can already tell that Bing will be bringing you more sales oriented news feeds than actual useful data. Google on the Other hand allows you to choose your desktop through I-Google; A handy and neat feature which allows the user to pick what information they want to see when you pull up your favorite Search Engine.

A simple search on Used Cars will automatically show Google best and most important Feature - Local Business Listings, If I am a Business Owner and I want to use the power of the Internet to allow my customers to find me I would choose Google. Bing does bring up an impressive search result, but if they are banking on the fact that they pulled up 100,000,000 more results than Google I have to ask myself; "what do I need with 250,000,000 search results?

Google ability to get you local data by geo-targeting your location with ads and content that matters to you will always beat out any new search engine.

Ease of Use, Pleasure of knowing how to find your information is key.

What ever happens google and bing both are quite away from each other. Regarding the speed of new version of google is good right now because of low server load on that version. As soon the public switches to new one, same time will be delivered by both versions(may be hardly few seconds difference). Big indexing number is just a show biz man, are they going to provide more than 1000 results??

Nice first hand comparison, just bare in mind that query times are low due to the low numbers of query been served in a sandbox environment, also no adwords are been queried and included in search results.

The update is not going to effect everybody, but to SEO's and webmasters that depend on small SERP movements, Caffeine is definately worth digging deeper.

Can you elaborate on what you mean by, "It has more reliance on keyword strings to produce better results."
What do you mean by "keyword strings" and how does it handle them differently, and do you mean on the page or in the links? I thought google always focused on keywords, and already counted "strings" more than unconnected words on a page... Thanks! Steve

Well, doing a comparison against Bing is just a little awkward, I may say.
Their relevancy, accuracy, and speed... is far from even the old Google (thus, I never really rely on it).

But I hope the way classic Google provide mixed-up result (such as the Google Image result) will be available on Caffeine, also.
  • dan gluckman · 3 months ago
I highly doubt that the essence of the new Google update is an increased focus on "on page" search strings. That would make it much easier to game, as that's the easiest SEO aspect to manipulate. Unless you also analyzed the "off page" SEO factors of the ranking pages in this evaluation, I don't think you can accurately make that claim. I bet it's more complicated than that.
  • Free Games · 3 months ago

What I have noticed is Giggle returns fewer sites for a keyword, and I think that is how they accomplish the faster returns for a search. I searched for one keyword that use to have 59 million sites returned, now its 24 million. So I hope they are clearing out the irrelevant sites and the duplicate url's and the ones that are 4 years old and dated useless sales pages!!! Quite a tall order, I will still use Bing - I like the competition.

Thanks for the great review on Google Caffine....

I could care less about speed, well, if it took 5 minutes then I would but 2/10 of a second --aren't we getting a little impatient? Anyway, what I want is Relevancy. I don't want youtube when I’m searching for information on a natural herbal remedy. My main problem with Google is I have to wade through hundreds of sites to find what I'm looking for and most of the sites have the same information.

Weed out the duplicate content...I don't need 50 sites with the same information. What I do need is what I’m looking for without having to visit 20 sites to find the information. If I have to wait one full minute to get that information then I’m willing to wait that long. It takes longer to wade through the sites that aren’t relevant.

I would prefer to have just one search engine but I find I need several when I’m doing research just to find the information I need. Perhaps a preference on what we want returned, (i.e. shopping, social networks, video, etc.) I know they have the “I’m feeling lucky” button but it doesn’t always work. I guess they can’t please everybody. Just my 2 cents.

I think this is not a very good news for an SEO professionals .

Because a long time, we have been in accordance with the previous google search rules to optimize their own websites, time accumulated, and now we have very good rankings.

But I and my many friends say,the new search so that our rankings have dropped significantly. In the next time we need to google to learn the new rules. But in this period of time, our sales will surely decline. I do not know anybody's ranking in the new search was still good or have some improve?

While the new search is helpful to users,it's a new development and challenges for us, but if the emphasis is designed to deal with bing, and it's too ridiculous.

I totally agree with the entire post, I searched few keywords myself and found Google caffeine more relevant and accurate with good speed.

Can't wait to see what this does to the seo industry. Should be interesting to follow the ranks as they increase / decrease following this new update from Google. I heard Bing has a similar update in the works.

Will we be able to run both caffeinated and decaffeinated versions of Google after Google caffeine is released? Some people prefer decaf, although I've never understood them at all.

I've always preferred the real thing, and decaf seemed like it was faking it. I don't suppose you can have it both ways. Decaf drinkers, get ready to give up your posturing and step up to the real thing ! Take your search like the professionals we always knew you could be ! No more decaf, good-bye and good riddance !

I notice you didn't comment about the accuracy of "competition" results. Google results vary widely, sometimes by several hundred thousand within a day.

Would appreciate it if you would
