Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Google’s New Layout: Love it or Hate It?

  • KeLópez · 5 months ago
I hate it. "The margins, they do nothing!"
  • iTbay · 5 months ago
possibly creating room for some real time search to the right maybe. Interesting how Twitter hyper linked the hashtags. All speculation!

I felt no difference in Googles Interface.... i didnt even realize they had changed it!
  • dyegov · 5 months ago
Well I like it. The new margins make it look cleaner, and for me there was no need for that kbs thing. Nice move Google.

That space isn't so useless when you're not using the US version of Google. ex: http://twitpic.com/95joe
  • dyegov · 5 months ago
    Now that's a good find :>
  • Valenciaseo · 5 months ago
It is very similar. But i like the new one.
  • Paradox · 5 months ago
That sucks :s.. (Removal of page size in kb)
  • Gaby · 5 months ago
I didn't notice a change. For me, if a site can change without the user noticing it's a good thing. It may also be pointless if the user can't tell, but hey, at least the change wasn't bad :D

What is meant by "aesthetics" here? The look and feel of the site are aesthetic concerns that go beyond merely surface-level appearance.

It also has show options, new layout sucks and this is like week old news
  • Стас · 5 months ago
    I like old version :(
  • lcalcote · 5 months ago
It's a good bet the new margins aren't aesthetically driven. Real-time search, SearchWiki Notes or some other new feature is likely to popup in the margin.

It's a change but I might not have noticed at all if it wasn't pointed out to me.

That "useless spacing" helps increase readability and hierarchy on the page. The smaller logo also helps put the search results first, not branding. Also, the logo looks MUCH better with that extra space around it.

As for kb size - unless you're on dialup, that was useless, outdated clutter. I haven't checked my mobile to see if they kept kb on their mobile version, where it would make more sense.

I think this is a positive improvement.

Also, let's be frank, this is Google. They don't shift a pixel without research to back it up. Sometimes that's to a fault, but probably not in this case.

The 'useless spacing' diagram inspired me to comment. It's just an incredibly ignorant statement. It's called 'whitespace' and is as important as the content, if not moreso, visually.

New google layout is simple and easy to use
  • Robert MacEwan · 5 months ago
Much cleaner looking. Is there any indication this relates to Microsoft's Bing offering?
  • pROCKrammer · 5 months ago
I hate because of not showing page size ...
  • josiahstaggs · 5 months ago
The new google layout for search results are so minor. I didn't even know anything had changed.
  • Jay · 5 months ago
I'll just say that I don't think the left indentation is useless.
As someone who doesn't run their browser's fullscreen (I make it more like a page width) I hate it when things are bumped up all the way against the window border.
  • Penny Grabber · 5 months ago
I don't like the fact that they no longer show the page size in kb.
  • Miria Reu · 5 months ago
I miss the predicted size of the website being displayed near the link. It actually became handy for me when trying to find resources on a Dial-up connected.

Now I have to guess lol

Did Google stop to consider that the reason people may be doing less searches is because they're finding the results on the first try more often, since there are more links to click from? This wasn't about usability, it was about increasing the number of pageviews to increase their ad revenue.

I like it a lot better; always hated the flush left margin. While it's sad to loose the page size indicator I really never looked at them anyway. I do think the useless space below the logo and above the search results is, well, useless.

i think the new better, it seems to be alive

I prefer seeing the size of the document.
  • Matt · 5 months ago
I like the new layout, it's slight but effective.

Also, we found that Google were running test adverts the saturday after it rolled out: http://www.neooptic.com/blog/post/Googles-New-L...

Does this perhaps mean that the change is not just for speed and ease of use but to possibly also support a future change in the format of search adverts?

    I love it .
  • Ishank badhani · 5 months ago
Hmmm, I think the margin makes the new layout cleaner. But Google should include displaying the size of web pages.

i need the page size in my search results!

it lets me know how much bloat is on a particular page.
why load a 300KB page for a cd listing when i could find the same info in a 30KB document?

cmon google , give me some advanced settings where i can customize my results.
sort results by page size? hmmmm nice!
