  • Bea Eggli · 4 months ago
Lets see for how long will venezuelans have internet as a free speech media...
  • Dennis Jernberg · 4 months ago
There's ways to get around any "great firewall". Just ask the Iranian theocrats who haven't been able to block Twitter.
  • timharper · 4 months ago
You are right, there will ALWAYS be a way to get your message out, be it via the internet, carrier pigeon or bedsheets on the outside of the prison walls, people have been doing it for centuries.
  • Thomas Hutter · 4 months ago
You are using the old flag of Venezuela.
  • Juan · 4 months ago
Hi, Thomas. We democrats recognize the old 7 stars Venezuelan flag as ours. Best regards.
  • ldb · 4 months ago
That's our real flag... not the one this government replaced with 8 stars. All venezuelan grew up loving and serving a flag with 7 stars, not 8.
  • leorodriguez · 4 months ago
    Dear Thomas.

That is the flag we acknowledge, the new one with 8 stars is yet another symbol of Chavez will to change our essence, to impose his vision. He also changed the NationalCrest, the name of the country (Republica Bolivariana de Venezuela) and he is even talking about changing the lyrics of our National Anthem. The Flag Mashable put is OUR FLAG! Bravo Mashable!.

    Hi guys,
Thanks for the exposure but please get your facts right:
Chavez has not been closing down radions: We ordered the shutdown of 34 radios and they were closed. That is it. You can find the full list here:
    http://werebuild.eu/wiki/index.php/!target_Vene...

Government officials confirm that UnionRadio will be closed this week.
More than 200 radio and tv stations are scheduled to be closed.

Chavez, via "El Oriente" called the people using Twitter "ultra right wing cyber terrorists" and also says that Facebook and Twitter (among others) are new ways of "creating terror".

Reliable non biased news source on Twitter are @A4F and @Telecomix that are working closely with people in Venezuela.

I am sure they will be more than welcome to help you inform your readers in the best and more accurate way with the latest information.

Mashable being all about Social Media should also have a social responsability. in supporting people around the world that are fihghting, in a non violent way, for Freedom of Speech.

    Cheers,
    Fernando

34 radio stations CLOSED down by Hugo Chavez.
1 TV station CLOSED down by Hugo Chavez.
1 TV station constantly attacked by Hugo Chavez.

Please let everyone know that there's also a site to allow non-twitter users to see what's happening in Venezuela with this media crackdown.

The fact the Hugo Chavez sees himself as the Ahmedinijad of Latin America contributes to the fact that he sees twitter as a threat.
  • ckanal · 4 months ago
This is a really interesting case study, and I too see parallels to #IranElection. Thanks, BTW, for the link to Breaking Tweets.
  • Daniel Bastardo · 4 months ago
I love the fact that you are using our seven stars flag!!!

Please do us a favor and do an article on "#lightupnigeria: Nigerians using Twitter to protest electricity/power supply crackdown" http://www.lightupnigeria.com | http://www.lightupnigeria.org Thanks

    Hi,
#FreeMediaVe his has been a top ten Twibbon trend for some time now. It's great that Twitter users are using platforms like Twibbon to show their discontent over issues regarding free speech.

You can still show your appreciation for this important cause at http://twibbon com.
Link to the cause itself is http://twibbon.com/join/FreeMediaVE.

    Thanks,

    The Twibbon Team

Sera que Chavez viaja como canciller de Cuba y no como presidente de Vzla?
