Facebook may have more photos, but it's a horrible place to view them, esp. compared to Flickr.

I hate that Yahoo owns Flickr. Can we get a savvy company to manage this site?
  • Paolo Amoroso · 1 month ago
Facebook hosts 15 billion thumbnails, not photos.

I agree with you, perhaps you can try www.facebook.com/yougotsnapped to upload your "Photos" which allow you to upload High Res Photos!!!

    m still using flickr
  • bitlockers · 1 month ago
I still use it, I have three accounts with them!
  • pdenya · 1 month ago
I use flickr to display family photos to non-technical relatives but that's about it. Other than that I don't share most photos online.
  • Hendie Dijkman · 1 month ago
I still use Flickr, mostly because they allow me to upload full resolution pictures, so I use it as a backup of sorts for my digital collection. The community nature of Flickr helps to share interesting pictures with fellow photographers as well!

flickr is far better than facebook when it comes to photo sharing.

Both statistics are amazing. They are totally different communities and I hope they remain that way. It would be easy to suggest that FB's amazing growth was threatening Flickr's future. One is about utility and ubiquity (FB.) The other is about a community for people that love photography. Let's hope there is room for both.

Still using flickr. Don't use Facebook since it butchers pictures and is such a small size.

I'm pretty new to Flickr, but I think I prefer it. It's more versatile and tends to promote higher quality pics than FB, which seems to mostly be cell phone pics (which I don't have a problem with, but it's nice to have a few higher quality ones available at Flickr)

I don't want the selection people who can view my photos to be limited by something as arbitrary as a "Friends" list.
  • etorsten · 1 month ago
One important aspect you should consider before choosing between Facebook and Flickr is ownership!

As I know every photo you're uploading to Facebook belongs to Facebook. You're not the owner anymore.
Is it the same with Yahoo/Flickr?

Flickr is better for real photography whereas Facebook wins for casual photos. Obviously there are more casual photographs being taken everyday and with Facebooks bigger userbase its obvious that it will be used more. I have a survey monkey (http://bit.ly/1TUmL) survey to find out what people are more interested in sharing - if anybody is interested

I agree. I know many professional photographers that use Flickr as a means of self-promotion. If you want to show off your photographic skill, Flickr is prime for that. Facebook reduces the quality of photos, and there is no way to expand photos to full size.

It should be no surprise that Facebook has more photos- especially with mobile uploading. Photos are shared by a much broader audience on Facebook than Flickr, and these photos are shared differently.

For the record I use both, but I definitely wouldn't put my Facebook photos on my Flickr pro account.

"Flickr is better for real photography whereas Facebook wins for casual photos."
    This.

Still use Flickr, with uploads to Flickr getting noted as a status update on FB. That's because of better quality and also because not everyone I want to share photos with is on FB, not by a long shot. Until more friends/family join FB, it will continue to be a subset of my online 'community'.

Wow! The rapid increase is mind boggling!

Facebook = snapshots from a camera phone
Flickr = you will find some excellent images there by professionals

There is just no comparing the two.
  • mimbrava · 1 month ago
I've been sharing my photos on Flickr since 2005. I post low-res images to deter their being used elsewhere without permission. As others have said, many of those who post to Flickr, especially those I've chosen as my Contacts, are often high-quality photographers who shoot more than snapshots but are skilled in their craft of photography and post processing. They are inspirations as I walk along the journey, and many are generous in the sharing of their knowledge and techniques.

The main separation at the moment seems to be the communities. Facebook's communities are subject to your friends (and usually riddled with pictures of people in the pub) whereas Flicks always seems to have a higher standard of photograph. In my experience :)

Facebook doesn't give you view counts which I find really annoying. It's nice to know what people find interesting which you can get some measure of by the view count.

Flickr also just seems like a more open community without viewing limited only to your friends.

Snapshots of friends go to FB, real photography goes to Flickr.

Truth hurts, don't it ya kool-aid sucking kiddies? If your not a Yahoo/Flickr butt kisser, you get your thoughts censored here it seems. Some freakin freedom of speech. Carry on, losers. Whenever you have some real truth to face up to and talk about here, let me know. Punks.

Facebook Photos and Flickr are two completely different environments, and the difference lies in the target audience. Facebook by default is a closed community as it requires membership in order to view the content. In addition, Facebook users have another layer of protection over their content in the form of "friends lists" and "networks". More importantly, Facebook lacks photo searching capabilities as well as advanced taxonomy (tagging & sub-albums). Thus, it is perfect for simply sharing photographs (both artistic & casual) with a close circle as the audience.

Flickr on the other hand is a completely open environment accessible both by internal and external search engines with simplified access control, copyright protection, display preferences, and highly sophisticated taxonomy as well as extensive community features. It is aimed at people who want to share their work not only with friends but with anyone else interested in such work.

I personally post "pictures from last night" on Facebook in a highly-protected album and my artistic attempts along with general interest snapshots go to Flickr.

I am surprised to see the number of photos Flickr. Really awesome
  • Kialaya · 1 month ago
I am definitely still using Flickr instead of Facebook for my photos. You just can't compare it. Facebook is a social net, I upload there only photos of friends for them to see but my artistic photos go to Flickr because of all the groups and because there is good and constructive criticism there. Totally different concepts in those two webs for me.

I m using flickr .. I have so many pics uploaded over there ... and comparing Flickr with facebook is not sensible ...

Yeah. Flickr is alot better than facebook. Im not a fan of paying for the premium service or their limits for monthly photo uploads. Facebook doesn't limit your photo limits.

I use Flickr but not as often as I should. I use it a lot more for work related stuff rather than personal. I need to start using it more.
  • L P · 1 month ago
I still use Flickr for storing and sharing photos. Facebook is used more for social networking.

Have you noted Flickr has had a impressive fall of views, two days from now?
I've experienced about 70% of loss, more than ever. And the pics in my front page haven't changed, and I haven't been qualified as unsafe.
