I think that if Facebook could pull this off efficiently, then it would be bigger and better than skype. This is because many people who have Facebook also have Skype, so combining both of them would make Facebook and extreme powerhouse.

This has the potential to eliminate skype and all the instant messenger services. Tok Box tried to do this but failed miserably and made it way too complicated. Right now the only site that I've found lets you instantly video chat within the web browser is Veribu. Pretty cool site but Facebook definitely could take this market over. I'm excited for this.

"Facebook wants to be the single place for all your online communication" If that is the way definetely they are loosing competitive advantage with windows live or Gmail... which have already incorporated Videochat.

So, I haven't been able to use Skype yet..I've heard wonders..but I'm on facebook 24/7. It's not an addiction, I just hold an office position. I think the video chat is a GREAT idea. Except..facebook chat usually sucks, hard core. If they can fix the chat and have video, that would be ideal.
Otherwise, maybe when I get a paying job, I'd be using skype...from what I've heard =)

Hmmm, I like the idea and would probably be willing to use it for casual personal use, however I would be wary of using Facebook for business purposes - don't know why, just think Skype seems 'right'.

Hi.

Im studying journalism at Portsmouth University and I'm writing a feature on social networking sites. It will be about sites such as myspace and facebook and how their uses have changed since they were first founded and about all of the extra features they are now offering.

I would be grateful if anyone could comment back with their thoughts on this. Do you think the reasons why people are using social networking sites have changed? What do you think about how they are developing and all of the features they now offer?

if FB really wanted to capture our entire collective attention(s), then they should have launched pop3 access to messaging (e.g. for gmail users) AND they should dramatically improve their messaging utilities (fwd, save/tag, folders, etc)

Facebook is killin it at the moment - the key is to aggregate all these services into one place and it's working - I post all my photos and videos there, chat (keep skype for professional) and with the new Fan Page features it is WAY better than a blog for appearing on my radar - I see Mashable updates all the time and 70% of the time I click through.

By creating groups on facebook they are making it possible to use it more as a professional tool (which I already do anyway).

Would love to know the traffic you get from your fan page guys?

Personally, I just wish they would improve their existing video app so that visitors could leave video messages for me right there on my main page, without having to click through to the video tab. That could start a really nice trend but Facebook need to get the ball rolling and feature their existing video app more prominently.

It's a natural venue for video chat--to its existing users. Skype has the advantage of appealing to international businesses and the non-social-networking crowd.

Facebook might bring video chat to current Facebook users that otherwise would not use video chat. But I don't think Facebook will bring new users to their network by luring them with video chat.

It seems like a "nice to have" feature that, granted, they're smart to add. But it's not revolutionary.

I would, cause honestly, a lot of people do have skype accounts but MOSTLY ever one has a facebook account. So it would be so much easier to do with video chat w/ people.
