Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Facebook to Launch Video Chat

  • Lisa · 6 months ago
So, I haven't been able to use Skype yet..I've heard wonders..but I'm on facebook 24/7. It's not an addiction, I just hold an office position. I think the video chat is a GREAT idea. Except..facebook chat usually sucks, hard core. If they can fix the chat and have video, that would be ideal.
Otherwise, maybe when I get a paying job, I'd be using skype...from what I've heard =)

I'm a mega Skype fan, I must say - mostly for IM chat though. Of course, I love Facebook - but have had my FB chat turned off since the day they launched it as it was just too distracting with so many friends... however, I do like the new Friend Lists integration feature as I have a ton of lists, and may consider that.

VIDEO chat brings a whole new meaning. And, assuming this can also be integrated with the Friend List chat integration then I LOVE the idea of a common platform to communicate (Ideally with no download as you say, Pete).

...hm, wonder if there'll be video conferencing ability too??!! The mind boggles. ;)

    Cheers,
    @marismith

This would be an interesting concept for facebook. They have been, over the last few days and weeks improving and organizing the chat.

I might use it but I'm in love with Skype.
  • Kevin Eklund · 6 months ago
Me too, I can't see people using this very much. I think I've used Facebook chat once in the past 2 years.
  • rama · 6 months ago
i still think facebook can beat skype if they do it right. wel'll see, it's only a speculation though.
  • Kevin Eklund · 6 months ago
Just curious, how many times have you used Facebook chat in the past year?

"Facebook, however, may be able to play on its advantage: the social site is a natural venue for video chat..."

It's a natural venue for video chat--to its existing users. Skype has the advantage of appealing to international businesses and the non-social-networking crowd.

Facebook might bring video chat to current Facebook users that otherwise would not use video chat. But I don't think Facebook will bring new users to their network by luring them with video chat.

It seems like a "nice to have" feature that, granted, they're smart to add. But it's not revolutionary.

But the ratio of people from facebook to skype is huge.
  • bonscrapatit · 6 months ago
If this would include video conferencing, I would say, YES, YES, YES! I am currently a Skype user but spend a lot of time on FB, so might be a nice option for me, but would still need Skype for those not on FB! Hmmm ... let me see, I think all of my Skype contacts ARE on FB! YES! Hopefully FB video chatting will have the same clarity as Skype. This is the biggest reason I've recommended it to SO many. :)

it would be a great addition

    I would if I had a camera.

A video-chat feature would be a nice addition to facebook.. especially if it does not require any downloads.

One of the main reasons I have not used video chat in gmail is because I do not really communicate in real-time through my email client.. I may check it every once in a while.

With facebook on the other hand, I use the chat feature often when other friends are online and video would be nice to see.
  • Randy · 6 months ago
Yes, and when you can do multiple people on a single video chat you will see virtual online reunions...
  • : David Lopez · 6 months ago
I would, cause honestly, a lot of people do have skype accounts but MOSTLY ever one has a facebook account. So it would be so much easier to do with video chat w/ people.
  • Justin Heintz · 6 months ago
It would be great if Facebook launched video chat! I personally wouldn't use it everyday like I do with Facebook chat already but I will use it.

Personally, I just wish they would improve their existing video app so that visitors could leave video messages for me right there on my main page, without having to click through to the video tab. That could start a really nice trend but Facebook need to get the ball rolling and feature their existing video app more prominently.

Facebook is killin it at the moment - the key is to aggregate all these services into one place and it's working - I post all my photos and videos there, chat (keep skype for professional) and with the new Fan Page features it is WAY better than a blog for appearing on my radar - I see Mashable updates all the time and 70% of the time I click through.

By creating groups on facebook they are making it possible to use it more as a professional tool (which I already do anyway).

Would love to know the traffic you get from your fan page guys?

if FB really wanted to capture our entire collective attention(s), then they should have launched pop3 access to messaging (e.g. for gmail users) AND they should dramatically improve their messaging utilities (fwd, save/tag, folders, etc)

    Hi.

Im studying journalism at Portsmouth University and I'm writing a feature on social networking sites. It will be about sites such as myspace and facebook and how their uses have changed since they were first founded and about all of the extra features they are now offering.

I would be grateful if anyone could comment back with their thoughts on this. Do you think the reasons why people are using social networking sites have changed? What do you think about how they are developing and all of the features they now offer?

    Thanks

Hmmm, I like the idea and would probably be willing to use it for casual personal use, however I would be wary of using Facebook for business purposes - don't know why, just think Skype seems 'right'.

Video chat would be a great addition to an already great service. My big gripe, why can't you make your Facebook chat window full screen?

I think this facility will be appreciated in as much as it will be the real and serious face book users.I further believe that load on web site will be genuinely reduced. It will be easy to the service provider to handle the serious friends. Daljit Singh

"Facebook wants to be the single place for all your online communication" If that is the way definetely they are loosing competitive advantage with windows live or Gmail... which have already incorporated Videochat.

    Let's see what happens...

This has the potential to eliminate skype and all the instant messenger services. Tok Box tried to do this but failed miserably and made it way too complicated. Right now the only site that I've found lets you instantly video chat within the web browser is Veribu. Pretty cool site but Facebook definitely could take this market over. I'm excited for this.

I think that if Facebook could pull this off efficiently, then it would be bigger and better than skype. This is because many people who have Facebook also have Skype, so combining both of them would make Facebook and extreme powerhouse.
