Dave, did you join us in #mashchat last night? That was seriously a blast. :)
  • mojaam · 5 months ago
It was fun, didn't know a better place to share my excitement. I missed some of the chat especially when Ben was in it but still pretty cool. You actually called out my vanity URL which made my night lol. But yeh, cool chat and coverage of the whole thing.

You said 277/minute for the first hour. It's actually 277/second. Well, 278/second if rounding :)

Last night I was unable to secure the user name for my business partner (her name) the ONE person who has squatted on HER real name has up the same fake profile (same photo and name) squatting on my business partner's name. She is a public figure, author and talk show host. WTF!!! I turned the profiles in as FAKE but that is such BS... I hope Facebook does their due diligence and she can get her username = real name. This is BS - Facebook should have had this option in the beginning and now what... we all lose precious time because there are people who need to steal others hard work and brand recognition??

Pretty happy with my url http://www.facebook.com/stevegonzalez
  • Rob Murray · 5 months ago
Doh! Set my alarm for GMT 5am and slept through. Had to settle for a number 2 after my name. Ah well.

It seems that not many non geeks know about this new option. My wife still can;t get her head around it no matter how enthusiastically I explain it to her!

I'm surprised so many people applied...3 million people is alot of nerds!

Well, if this one event proves something, social media is proving to be a dominant force. Not only personally, but for businesses too. The key is, how to make the names more valuable. I got my name, and looking toward the future. I guess im feeling a little nutty, in a good way, that I got the name i wanted. Yea, facebook!

Love to see so many people using Macs.
  • scotthoffman · 5 months ago
Great coverage Ben...did you ask why they didn't try to sell the names, at $1.00 a pop that could have amounted to some serious revenue, and I would have gladly paid it.

I was able to secure my username , I'm very happy...
  • Joe Dawson · 5 months ago
That's just over 1% of the entire Facebook population that have secured their Vanity URL so far then!
  • Liz · 5 months ago
With 200 million (or is it 300 million now?) users, I expected more impressive working quarters. And maybe a few more female employees (more than 1?). It's an interesting glimpse behind the scenes though & I'm surprised they gave you access, especially on such a stressful night.
  • Michael Bauser · 5 months ago
You're basing your estmate of the number of women employees on a set of party photos? That is seriously stupid.

After reading the post i was a little worried. But its OK. I got my desired user name. I am fuentedance by the way. :-)
  • KNAN · 5 months ago
Any special reason why Facebook or Linkedin doesn't allow us to choose usernames consisting of less than 5 characters? I wanted them to exactly match my Twitter profile- http://twitter.com/knan
  • Jman · 5 months ago
Probably, because a lot of those words are going to be used for company acronyms like NBC or BBC. It is likely that they did that to enforce a generalised rule to prevent squatting. It would be far easier than having a list of acronyms.

However, I am only speculating here, I could be wrong.

Hold on a sec, you said:

"By 10:01 PM PT, full hour after release, around one million custom URLs had been claimed. That’s an average of 278 usernames per minute or so."

An hour after release... 60 minutes in an hour, so it's 1,000,000/60 = most definitely not 278. More like 16,667 usernames a minute.

Why is this a big deal? Kee-rist, if facebook had some something normal like this in the first place, like every other social networking site, like pretty much every other site on the net, this wouldn't be an issue. Facebook is an abomination on the internet and I'll be delighted when something else takes its place as the next big thing.

With those 3 millions, how many acccounts were disabled without aparent reason? I never violated any of their code of conduct but I just couldnt understand why all of a sudden my account was disabled.

I wrote FB about it but to this day, I haven't receive any response from their team. Please help. I can't make another account. My friends are there and that's where I have met a lot of my long lost friends.
