Not really, OpenID is supposed to do authentication, nothing more.

You might still have to sign up with the site but afterwards you should be able to log in with your OpenID rather than giving a password to the site directly.

That's not the point MikeonTV. We all have different real personas and I think it reasonable that people may want to keep their social identity and their work-related identity separate online too. Offering different login options mean you not only provide a simpler login method regardless of which identity people hold, but they can choose their work oriented one for work related sites and so on.

We've now got OpenID, Facebook and Twitter identity sign in to our site working at http://www.wecando.biz by the way if anyone wants to see how it works. Didn't take long to do using RPX from JanRain.

I'm having the same problem. When I link my Google account, a browser window titled "OpenID Receiver" opens which is blank. When I close it the FB account settings page says it was unsuccessfull. When I log back into FB, it says it's liked to Google but when I sign into GMail and then open FB in a new tab, I need to sign into FB.

I've tried this on multiple computers all running XP and used IE7, Firefox and Chrome. Can anyone help?

Yes, I am an OpenID user and have previously had no interest what so ever in Facebook. I would like to be able to view stuff by friends without creating another login. I'm still waiting for Facebook to make good on their OpenID promise. So far there is still no way to create an account with OpenID. You have to start by creating another username and login which to the best of my understanding is exactly what OpenID is meant to avoid.

Google FriendConnect did support Facebook Connect but Facebook disabled it, saying that it violates Facebook's Terms of Service. Obviously, they wanted to push Facebook Connect.

I think that we are seeing all of these identity platforms emerge but what we need is one open-source one. Think about it, we have:
- Google FriendConnect
- Facebook Connect
- MySpace Data availability (or whatever it's officially called)
- Twitter sign-on
- Open-ID
- Disqus
- IntenseDebate
- Google account

Did I miss anything? We need one, not all of these. And one that is open-source and not proprietary. If you ask me, I'd say it's between Google FriendConnect and OpenID.

I like the idea of OpenID but with recent security issues with Google Accounts (I am not sure if other service providers are secure enough), account privacy and security needs to be seriously considered!

Recently, I and many others (the group of victims have been communicating via email) have been having issues with Google Accounts. This guy sent me screenshots of all sorts of services I have access to when he got "logged on to" my Google Account. I can imagine if he knows which site I have been using via OpenID, things would be very much worse!

I have blogged about the issues on http://derickng.com/posts/1... and have gathered other users who are experiencing the same problems. We just can't get to someone in Google to handle or even post a response! I have tried twittering to @google and someone else tried sending to security@google.com but with no avail. Would really appreciate if someone here can blog about this issue or just hand it to you Googler friend. :)

In any case, I am stuck with the Google services which are IMO really terrific but this security breach is really making me think twice on using SaaS compared to hosting everything on your own server (provided it is well protected :p). Good luck to everyone whose Google accounts might have been peeked into.

So I linked my Gmail account to Facebook. After logging into Gmail, I browse to Facebook, but it is still asking me to log in.

I think they should also consider if they not already that existing users should also be offered ways to improve there sign in experience in a Facebook -> [indentity provider] link

Next move has to be LiveID sign on ;) and/or also Windows Live set the traction wheels moving with there Open ID 2.0 Provider system that they gave a "Technical Preview" last October see http://dev.live.com/blogs/d... surely Microsoft and Facebook and the friendliness between the both of them but what happened with the inspirations the 2 had with Live Search (which soon going to have a rebrand)

This is fascinating news. OpenID stands the greatest chance of all of becoming a single sign on to the web at large -- exceeding what Microsoft ever managed with Passport (now Windows Live ID in essence) and what Facebook was ever likely to achieve pushing Facebook Connect as a proprietary solution -- but it could still be a lot more usable. Though maybe truly widespread support will motivate providers to make it more friendly to the non-techie.

Either way, and whoever wins out, single sign on is coming and will be a big benefit for everyone. We'll be adding support for OpenID, Facebook, Google, Windows Live, Twitter and Wordpress based authentication to our site next month. It's not that tough to do.

Interesting development... I use both Google Friend Connect and Facebook Connect for various websites, and the latter seems to have a much larger presence based on my experience. I'm wondering if this is a move by Facebook to entice Google-using folks into Facebook Connect, and away from Google Friend Connect... hmm.
