Mashable - The Social Media Guide: End of an Era: GeoCities Closes This Month

  • Laksha · 2 months ago
I made my first website in GeoCities. I was very excited :). In recent few months specially after Yahoo Microsoft search deal, Yahoo is consolidating their services and focus area. They already closed few other services like Yahoo 360 and started few new services like OMG, Zimbra and Meme (service similar to twitter). I always like yahoo and would like them to comeback into main stream like they were before 5-6 years back.

    what's yahoo going to doo?
  • Sir Loin · 2 months ago
Indeed the end of an era, there was a certain charm to those sites back then, despite the blinking & marquee text, and "Sign my Guestbook!" pleas. Wish I could have grabbed my stuff off of Xoom when they went down :(

Ah, the memories...I think I built my first site there in like 1994! It was a lame site to say the least, but it still holds a special place in my heart, haha.

Wow ... I didn't know it was still around. I also remember using a site called nettaxi.com that was big around the same time as geocities. So, where are the geocities users going? www.ning.com, www.tabup.com, yahoo hosting services as suggested?

I made many computer labs on Geocities. Many would continue to learn. We are sad!

How would I go about tracking down my old Geocities account, if the email address I used back in the day is loooong gone...?
  • Jimmy Kupczak · 2 months ago
I never had a GeoCities site. Growing up I used Angelfire and then Tripod later on.

    Ah the memories.

This is living proof that web2 is taking over from web1 as consumer driven sites. I am the founder of Geocities competitor called iFlaker, www.iflaker.com, where you build your website right on the browser. You don’t even have to sign-up to start tweaking your website. The browser is also intelligent to remembers all your changes the next time you come back if you left without sign-up. When you finally decide to sign-up (For FREE), www.iflaker.com provides you with a friendly web address such as www.iflaker.com/zcf

Back when I was in middle school all my friends were making their first website on GeoCities. So, naturally, I used AngelFire instead.

awww. my very first ever couple (granted free and full of ads) of websites were with these guys. so cheesy, yet...very...very nostalgic. really could care less now but just seeing this article definitely brought back some memories of excitement over cheesy buttons and stuff that i thought looked awesome at the time. we all know how hindsight 20/20 goes. haha.

Hey Twitter, are you so sure about that 1 billion dollar valuation? I had totally forgotten Yahoo paid such a dear price. Of course, at that time, Yahoo's stock was also exorbitantly priced, so I guess it comes out in the wash. I'm reminded of what Douglas Adams wrote:

"This planet has -- or rather had -- a problem, which was this: most of the people living on it were unhappy for pretty much of the time. Many solutions were suggested for this problem, but most of these were largely concerned with the movements of small green pieces of paper, which is odd because on the whole it wasn't the small green pieces of paper that were unhappy."

  • paulmccord · 1 month ago
I had a Geocities page at one time and I was even a neighborhood moderator at one time. I wish they would come up with another service of some sort of method to import these pages into other sites so they will not be lost.
