This video certainly has much to do with social media news, starting with the fact that it was surveillance camera footage which was picked up by the news media which then was recorded and uploaded to websites which are social in nature. But that's just speaking in technicalities. A video going viral is a combination of being shared and being media. Oh wait, that's technically social media also..

I'm actually not quite sure why this isn't social media news. Perhaps these kinds of stories should be prefaced with [viral media] in their titles, as they are in fact social media in action either before or after it is posted in Mashable. Then if a reader wishes he or she can simply skip reading the story altogether upon seeing the title. When I read a newspaper there certainly are sections I don't ever read. Apply the habit here.

No, that's just Boston for you. That's how people have to dress to be proper in Boston. It's like a totally different world out there. I've lived all over the country but no wear is as uptight about judging people's status by their dress than Boston. Most likely she was coming from somewhere.

what i was really interested in:
see those red squares in the video that follow people's faces and body parts?
if i am not mistaken that is similar technology to what London's CCTV system uses to identify suspicious/dangerous activity and flag a video feed. wondering if this technology could have warned the operator of someone on the tracks automatically. anyone know?

I didn't really get how balloon boy was relevant to Mashable either, but somehow it became their big story for the day and days. I still don't really get it. But whatever.

I agree on this one too. I'm starting to think Mashable should expand its tagline or whatever to something like "talking about what people are talking about." Cause they really are covering the topics of the story and spreading the story itself, rather than just discussing anything social media.
