Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Dropbox for iPhone Is Out (and Awesome)

  • iphoney · 2 months ago
Bummer, I love Dropbox, but forcing the 3.1 update for it incredibly LAME. No app is ever worth going back to a crippled iPhone.
  • Aaron · 2 months ago
The service is amazingly cool, go out and get the app and sign up.

Apple iDisk/mobileme users have this already, yes?

I have MobileMe, which gives access to your iDisk, and I am wondering if Dropbox offers anything beyond what MobileMe does. Anyone use both and have any talking points?
  • aboutjer · 2 months ago
I use both services, MobileMe for home and Dropbox for work. I'm downloading the Dropbox app to check it out. I'll append later....

The sharing capabilities of dropbox and the versionining of files is very powerful and easy to use. This is not available on MobileMe iDisk. Also, the performance of the syncing with dropbox is amazing --much more reliable than iDisk.

Thank you so much for warning about the iTunes link.
  • Gordon Kelly · 2 months ago
Yep, it's nice but other than emailing links to files and adding photos it isn't as powerful or user friendly as the web app. I love Dropbox too, but don't get so carried away Mashable!

I am downloading the desktop application right now, and also the iPhone app! I've known about Dropbox but never have tried it. Having this type of access for the iPhone is very attractive to me because I have great difficulty using iTunes to transfer files to the phone. It is not intuitive. I learned on a mac 20 years ago, but I've been an expert PC user ever since. I just can't get the gist of iTunes. Ever since purchasing my iPhone in August of 2009, I've been looking for a drag-and-drop file solution for this device. I think this is exactly what I am looking for. I will report my results!

Dropbox is a really great service and this app adds quite a bit to it.

The photo/video bit is probably the coolest thing about it. You can snap a photo and literally less than 10 seconds later the photo is on your hard drive and in the cloud. Boom.

Apple should have done something like this using iDisk and the iPhone camera from day 1.

I love Dropbox and have been using them Forever. They are just like having a Hard Drive Anywhere. I also use Adrive where it gives you 50GB for Free as well, but not as many features as dropbox

i agree Gordon, the web app has just about everything this app has. i've been using the webapp for quite a while. still, it's free and why not use this anyway. Got to love DropBox.
  • dainathomas · 2 months ago

Great product...the desktop stuff was good and now it is great with the iPhone App! One question, any thoughts on Security? I did not see any lock option or ability to deactivate access from the desktop or website... thoughts?

Nice tool but i still dont like the fact to have my data stored on their severs
Would be better if i would be direct like PowerFolder but unfortunally they dont have an iphone app right now.

I love drop box on my desktop -its a great tool. But so is my jailbroken iPhone. The fact that the Dropbox install requires an upgrade to 3.1 means that I won't have Dropbox on my iPhone.

Yet. Until someone comes up with a cydia version.
  • Kaell · 2 weeks ago
blackra1n will jailbreak a 3.1 iPhone. Worked for me. Just cannot unlock the carrier thing yet I believe. I have Cydia working just fine on an iPhone 3.1.2. Will try Dropbox on the iPhone soon.
