I am taking the plunge on Droid. I am bored to death of the oogling over the iPhone. I have an iTouch it is a great device. But the world won't begin and end with an iPhone.
  • Jon · 1 month ago
yeah, the smart phone world pretty much did begin with the iphone, and if apple keeps the iphone on a schedule just like its dominant ipod,( coming out with new ones every year) the smartphone world will likely end with it too.
  • Patrick · 1 month ago
Jon, to begin with, I wrote the "world" won't begin and end with an iPhone. Sony had the market cornered on the walkman. Things change. They always change.

If you think the Smartphone began with the iPhone, you missed out. I will agree that Apple changed the smartphone world forever. But Apple will have to now compete like they never have before. Apple needs to listen to it's users and get on a better network or it will always be fighting an uphill battle. Oh yeah, " There's a MAP for that!" Enough said?

The Droid marketing campaign reminds me of the first Saturn electric car marketing campaign. It's very Cloverfield-ish. I think their branding firm has seen too many SAW movies.

I love it how Apple got owned in an advertising campaign just as clever and interesting as anything they've ever created, and now they're accusing the competition of being nothing but hype. Seems rather immature, don't you think? Heaven forfend anyone acknowledge that the iPhone actually has weaknesses.

I was considering buying an iPhone for my birthday, but only because I use a Mac and I thought I'd make it easy on myself in terms of compatibility. And not because I think the iPhone is the end-all-be-all of smart phones. But if the new Droid is compatible with my computer, I'll seriously consider buying it instead.

I've had an iPhone since they were released. It's nice, but the AT&T coverage is terrible with lots of dropped calls and no reception in some cases (in my area). That combined with Apple's continued decision to not support Flash on the iPhone will have me switching to the Droid phone with Verizon if it supports Flash (as mentioned above in your article) and looks like a good phone. In my opinion the iPhone has become exactly what it was against when it was first released.

Thanks Free Marketplace for continuing to support competition and innovations from companies who want to add features and options over companies who try to lock them out.

The new Droid ad is obnoxious. Dirty ads don't work. If the unit is that good, why don't they just say what the new phone does. Slaming Iphone is dumb....like Verizon so if figures. And, I'm not an iPhone user, either; I just hate negative advertising...we get enuf of that crap from the politicians with their falsehood advertising.
  • Dhakablues · 1 month ago
Okay,, so when you see the typical Apple Ads about bashing Microsoft.. Dont you think it worked? You like it or not,, the ads do work and Apple's clutter free ads do have an impact. Apple successfully instilled in people's mind that Microsoft is full of crap and Apple is for the sophisticated and polished...But interestingly when Microsoft came up with I am a PC ads where average buyers were getting their PCs for the money they can afford,, Apple filed a complaint saying that Microsoft is attacking Apple unfairly ( yeah, Hello!!)
  • andy_c · 1 month ago
Love the ad, apple ads have always verged on the smug for my liking (which, perhaps they are entitled to be), nice to see the coolest kid in the yard fall over his shoelaces once in a while.

Couldn't really give a shit about the phone tho. As long as it makes phonecalls I'm happy.

wuts with google teaming up with all these loser companies...they must be crackin good deals? it just looks like an iphone wanna be competitor.

I am pretty sure I will take the plunge. I've been on Verizon for about 4 years now and love the service. This phone might not kill the iPhone but it looks awesome and I'm getting an iPod touch anyway so don't really need the iPhone

I've been waiting for a good smartphone on verizon sine June 2007. That was the month that I realized I could never stick with ATT, no matter how good the phone. Sorry Apple ... you need to break your exclusive unless you want to start hemorrhaging customers.

Aside from BGR, engadget had finally "touched" the droid in the flesh.
see their "mini" preview clip plus a boring yet informative "trailer" of
droid's marketing consultant to let newbies know what they will be having

The phone looks awesome & with great applications as well!! I want to hear what customers say about it & then I'll decided if I get it or not! But so far I LOVE HOW IT LOOKS!
  • Jonathan Pongco · 1 month ago
Reminds me of the old "Genesis does ... what nintenDON'T" Ads of the early 1990s. We'll see what happens.
  • pinoytutorial · 1 month ago
At this point, its not about the battle between iPhone Vs Droid. But its more about which is more lucrative to the lifestyle of the aspiring users. A year from now a new gadget will surely be created and one must analyze that its all about how a device made our lives more easy. Not berating other gadget we don't like.

Why give it a keyboard... but then make the keyboard and buttons so flat... that you can't feel them????

Isn't that the whole point of a real keyboard???
  • blt28 · 1 month ago

I will definitely be grabbing this phone come January when I have an upgrade. I was thinking, "New phone, or iTouch?" Well, here we go. This is exactly the phone I've been waiting for. It's just too good to be true!

The camera specs are looking good but nothing else intrigues me enough to go Droid. I was on the Verizon site for hours last night reviewing all the smart phones and Blackberrys. I'm going with Blackberry - their top of the line. It has a touch screen, decent camera and wi-fi so that I can power my computer when I travel. Yes, $30 more per month but with the friends and family plan, it is still a $40 savings per month.

I think I will like all the other possibilities with the Blackberry. I'll give it a try.

Sick of iPhone hype, and want to believe this hype. I'm going to give it a month or two to see what users say, but i'm seriously leaning on trading up (Storm) to this.
