PDANet is free for Droid tethering and works GREAT. They just released an update that fixed some connection issues. It's in the Android marketplace. I was able to get internet on my laptop while driving. Well my wife was driving. And it's free. :-)

This looks to me like a data plan and not a tethering plan. If the phone is open source, how does Verizon plan to stop us from installing a application that can allow us to tether?
Or is there more governance that no one is talking about right now?

An app will likely be available to tether the Droid to a PC before Verizon makes their paid mobile broadband connect option available. That's assuming one doesn't already exist. I've used my Treo 755p with a work-around program (PDAnet) for two years now without ever paying for mobile broadband connect. I simply bought PDAnet for a one time $30 fee.

I have Sprint. Reception is great, it's fast, unlimited Internet access and messaging is $20/month and I can tether my brains out. I've had no problem running both my laptop and my iPod Touch over the phone. I have an HTC Mogul (Windows Mobile).
It amazes me that people put up with Verizon.

I was planning on getting a droid until two minutes ago when I found out it won’t tether until 2010. I’m between permanent housing at the moment and tethering is my primary home internet. Booo

BTW I didn’t have to sign a contract for tethering.

Nice. In Finland we have unlimited data plan (just SIM card, no other costs) 9,8€/month. This can be added to existing contract. At least something is better here. :)

On my Blackberry bill there is a limit on tethering but no limit on the Blackberry data access. Also if you get the $99 PDA/Smartphone Nationwide Email & Messaging plan you should be able to add tethering for only $15.

This is actually a pretty standard setup for Verizon. If you have a smartphone, you have to pay $60/month for tethering, but they count the cost of your normal data plan as part of that.

IE: I have a Blackberry with the BES plan, which is $45/month, so I only have to pay an extra $15/month for tethering ($60 total).

Nice part about all of it is that VZW doesn't restrict the phones that you can get tethering on, unlike AT&T

To me, the big question is whether you will be locked into an additional contract term for tethering, or can you turn it on for a month when traveling and off when you don't need it? If so, $30 is a little steeper than I'd like, but not completely unreasonable. If you have to sign a 1 or 2 year contract on the tethering option, it's a non-starter for me.

The question is, will the 5GB limit include both tethered usage and normal phone usage? Or will you have 5GB for your laptop and 5GB for your phone, for a total max of 10GB. If its the latter, it's a decent deal. If it's the former, it's a horrible deal.
