Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Drew Carey Ups the Ante: Bids $1 Million for @Drew on Twitter

  • journik · 2 months ago
    OK Wait,

Is he Carey saying he wants to BUY @drew from olanoff? or is this just a clean donation for followers?
  • Adam Ostrow · 2 months ago
the logistics have been worked out w/ Twitter. Drew Carey (or, another rich and famous Drew) will simply get the @drew name for their account, and Olanoff will move to a new name with his current followers.

Exactly, usernames will be swapped. My tweets and followers stay in place. Notice how you can change your username at any time? ;)

Drew, D.O., I got two words for you. "Brill," and "Yent."
D.C., You're not so shabby either! PS... Your predecessor is the reason my mom changed my hard to pronounce korean name to "Bob." Many years of success to you!

this is where Twitter can make money.... followers for one dollar a piece... as people have been recommending twitter should charge 1$ per new follower for celebrities, tv channels (possibly the Prize is right is paying him????), companies and so forth....

I think Drew is very cheap offering only 1dollar per new follower and he's considering it donation as opposed to just buying followers.... Donations would be 5-10dollars per new follower....

Shira doesn't work for CBS News. She's a blogger who does some stuff for cbsnews.com A very big difference. Still a good story. Hope @drew gets lots of money.

Twitter could make it happen in no time by putting @drew on the suggested user list.

That's a really cool idea! Now I just need to register some name that will be really useful in a few years time and make megabucks out of it. Kinda reminds me of the early days of the internet, when the wise few bought up loads of domain names which were then sold to the big companies for $$$. Or just registered stuff that would obviously be big once the internet took off (say, sex.com, weather.com or whatever)

Could someone create a bot that created twitter accounts (maybe going through Tor to hide originating IP address) and maybe a billion followers?
  • poor · 1 month ago
That's a wonderful thing to do. Geeze, I didn't realize someone like him would be loaded enough to donate a million.
