Mashable - The Social Media Guide: DreamScreen: HP Beats Apple to the Punch With Sleek Tablet

  • Jon Keaty · 2 months ago
That's one slow piece of cr@p. Its taking forever to swap modes and display a few files. And this is the demo!
  • Stan_Schroeder · 2 months ago
No internet browsing? Sorry, but I don't see this one going far.
  • dainathomas · 2 months ago
Same here .. Why would anyone want it ..if one cant do internet surfing .. then I think .. It would be better to keep my Phone in my pocket then a tablet .. as I can do internet browsing on my phone ..

    Cheers,
    Daina

I don't think Apple has to worry about something like this. Look at how complicated it is to view pictures. There's no way my Mom would get those steps right. "SD Card? Music on my camera? I don't get it..."

Reminds me of a WinMo phone I used to have. I showed it to a colleague who noticed the File Browser. His comment: "It's like Windows on your phone. Bummer!"
  • Brad F. · 2 months ago
Without internet browsing capability this thing is more useful than a second anus. Damn near every new mobile phone can browse the internet and log into Facebook. They can store photos too. Who wants to pay 200 ~ 300 bucks to do something their phone can do? Just having a bigger screen isn't worth it. What a piece of crap. A real tablet should at least be a step across from a netbook. Not a step down.

HP disclaimers for "average" American Joe are killing me. Please note that this sentence might look different after Admins edit it.
  • Dean · 2 months ago
That is beyond lame, I just wasted 30 seconds of my life.
  • Michele of Bethlehem · 2 months ago
this is nothing more than a glorified digital photo frame. And at $299 it seems kind of silly.
  • Name · 2 months ago
She is almost lifelike. And the icon for the "photos"... I could have swore that the photos under the camera is the one from Apple's iPhoto app
  • James Burgos · 2 months ago
    Utterly Craptacular!!!!
  • johnburgin · 2 months ago
Hardly an Apple-beater, is it? Clunky, awkward, and after I've fiddled around with thumb sticks or sd cards why do i then use the 'remote control'? Cheap it may be, but very limited. I've already got what it does, and it's smaller - it's my phone.
  • Travis · 2 months ago
Glorified Picture frame. Hardly what Apple was planning. Thank you Over-Hype.
  • PF · 2 months ago
This is just a digital photo frame that can also play movies and music and maybe do something cool like connect with social media networks. A remote? What, do I put that in my pocket when I walk around so I can pull it out when I want to look at my photos. This is nothing like the Apple Tablet will be. FAIL.

HP "beat" Apple. Apple is laughing right now.
  • Connor Mason · 2 months ago
    My thoughts exactly.
  • zz · 2 months ago
I think this post is comparing an apple with a virtual orange.
  • Johnny Worthington · 2 months ago

I'd say, "now apple need only make one that does everything this does and more." But who am I kidding? Apple will release new tablets every year, slowly giving them more and more already common features so you have to buy them over and over and over and spend a million dollars to maintain your Apple image.
  • Crunchy Steve · 2 months ago
Good lord, you go on about the "Apple Tablet" like it's real. This rumour is nothing more than the wishful thinking of media mass hysterics. We will never know if the tablet is "forthcoming" until it comes forth. As for this HP toy beating any imaginary Apple device, it's nothing more than a smart photo frame, not even in the same class. In the classical media, this is what we call letting a good story get in the way of the truth.
  • Numbnuts Steve · 2 months ago
The Apple Tablet is not a rumor or wishful thinking so where ever you're coming up with that...
& I think the purpose of this device is to watch movies, view photos, and listen to music. Like a portable DVD player. Nonetheless, I wouldn't buy an HP if it were the last computer brand in the world.
  • Christopher Daniel Cox · 2 months ago
No, while there has been some evidence that Apple has been buying parts for some new device, all of this has also been by word of mouth. It hasn't been announced yet, therefore it's still a rumor.

Good article Ben. Thanks for keeping the Internet peeps up to date on cool electronics like the HP DreamScreen.
  • Osiris · 2 months ago
Good Article? More like paid advertisement
  • Ray Ray Angel · 2 months ago
So now I just need to get my hands on one to take apart and improve. I'm going to buy one once I have more of the technical specs and know what sort of hacks I can do to make it actually usable. (Need a browser)
  • Jason Rukus · 2 months ago
It's not so much the hardware, it's the software. I want an Apple tablet because I prefer OSX over anything else I've used.
  • Dustin Luther · 2 months ago
Could they make a more boring video about the DreamScreen? I saw the FB icon and I'm pretty sure I saw a Pandora icon, so there's potential for the device to be interesting, but I feel bad for the woman who had to read that script.
  • saamimatloob · 2 months ago
internet browsing and im shouldve been there ..considering facebook and pandora is there
  • Kiwak · 2 months ago
It seems like nothing more like digital frame...

  • Anon · 2 months ago
A smart photo frame maybe, a tablet? definitely not!
  • ryaninc · 2 months ago
I actually think this has a place and could be really useful in certain situations. For example, I would love to be able to put a touchscreen computer in our guest room hooked up with speakers so anyone staying in the room could listen to their own music. But touchscreen computers are expensive and can be complicated, especially for someone unfamiliar with computers. But a tablet like this would be dead simple and perfect for that use. $249 isn't bad at all for a wall-mounted, touchscreen music selection device. It can even display pictures. I actually think it's pretty awesome and I just might get one.
  • Macsupport · 2 months ago
" It has touch screen controls and a remote for easy use of pre-installed apps" Where, exactly, do you see that it has a touch screen? Why would she be using the remote if it was a touch screen?
  • Chame · 2 months ago
Apple's tablet will most likely be a tablet pc like device . This article is useless since it is comparing a table pc against media player
  • Scott Fillmer · 2 months ago
just one thing SHE DIDN'T EVEN TOUCH THE SCREEN???? Come on, this thing is but a vapor of what I hope an apple tablet will be. This thing doesn't even look like it will function as a netbook? Pretty weak.
  • adamvee · 2 months ago
I very much doubt that Apple will be any losing any sleep over the HP dream screen. Don't forget that Apple doesn’t make its money by being the first to launch a new technology. The IPod was not the first mp3 player, and the iphone was not the first phone to utilise touch screen.

Now doubt Apple will eventually release a tablet, but not until all aspects have been painstakingly refined and Jobs’ is confident that it will be the best (and not necessarily the first) wireless tablet on the market.

My tip is to have save some of your xmas money for some exciting releases expected early 2010
  • LeftOfSean · 2 months ago
Why on earth would HP produce a product like this that doesn't have internet browsing capability? Can you say product failure?
  • josh · 2 months ago
HP have brought out a product that should have been released a year or two ago.. Lets face it: If HP released this it would have been revolutionary and would have had ground. But it seems pointless for yet another device in your home to have access to facebook (future proofing?? when FB is outdated, so is this product..) wifi music players and photo players and the like prevalent throughout. the smartphones dominate the personal internet browsing arena. and the Archos 5? its far too small to call it a tablet also, more so a pocket PC or something... My definition of a tablet should be around a single page size (letter or A4), some features that would excite me would wifi, full internet browsing, media centre abilities and something truly inspiring above and beyond these.
  • Cole Orton · 2 months ago
    what an awful demo.
  • IamAlana · 2 months ago
That thing is pretty lame. lol

Am I the only one who thinks this interface sucks?
  • darcey1 · 2 months ago
No. I was cringeing watching it. Who the hell designed this GUI? Helen Keller??
  • Tinus · 2 months ago
It's not only the software interface that sucks. Who on earth puts the physical buttons at the bottom while the thing is supposed to stand in the upright position?
  • Brian · 2 months ago
I'm a total junkie so def kinda want this, but why no web browsing? Seems simple enough to have.
  • drex · 2 months ago
Apple has no worries with this device. Wow, so many folders clicks tabs OUCH.
  • Marcio Cyrillo · 2 months ago
Guys, I really don't think this is comparable to a possible tablet version from Apple, not to mention that this video does not have any glamour. Looks like an advanced picture frame for me.
  • jdenizac · 2 months ago
This doesn't seem like a competitor, this seems like a Kindle 3 http://www.collegehumor.com/video:1910868
  • TomC · 2 months ago
This doesn't have a touchscreen. It's meant as a networked picture frame...but also has limited FB feed info and internet radio. It doesn't display videos.
  • Osiris · 2 months ago
This device isn't even Touch - How can you claim it "Beats" Apple to anything?
  • Rick · 2 months ago
What a stupid article and header. Like others have said this is nothing but a extension to a digital picture frame. A sleek tablet it is not. No web, no email, no app store. The list could go on. Fail for the product and the "beats Apple to the punch" statement.
  • Justin J. Dean · 2 months ago
Um, this isn't so much a tablet as it is just a photo frame with a few apps on it. If it was $49 it might be worth it. The point is to do more for less, not do less for more.
  • Thomas · 2 months ago
Not the Strongest Product they have come out with. I was impressed by Touchsmart and multitouch technology.

This would be just as innovative if it had something new and different. One example is if it was connected to the internet so you can update photos remotely or something along those lines.
  • Yogesh · 2 months ago
this product is not at all impressive..no reason to buy this...
  • Justin · 2 months ago
Unless it's got a full OS on it and is pressure sensitive and has the inner guts to power adobe its in now way shape or form competition to apple tablet. Moreover a waste of money its just big and clunky and doesn't do anything an ipod touch or iphone doesn't do already to make up for its size... just my 2 cents.
  • JavaSTL · 2 months ago
So it's a giant, cordless, proprietary Chumby?
  • Name · 2 months ago
This is kind of sad. No way is it a tablet PC - it's just a digital photo frame that does mp3 and a couple other items. You could buy a netbook for that money and have so much more.
  • mdot214 · 2 months ago
If this had wi-fi it would be a game-changer. Maybe they are working on it and wanted to beat Mac to the punch?
  • Taranfx · 2 months ago
    Dude, this isn't Tablet
Check Archos 5. You need to learn what is meant by 'Tablet'.
  • Rob · 2 months ago
This isn't a "tablet" at all.
  • Connor Mason · 2 months ago
This is hardly a tablet - it's more like a glorified digital picture frame. Sure, the Facebook and Pandora may be neat, but I never imagined navigating my "tablet" with a remote control. If it can do audio out to nicer speakers, this product may prove useful as a living room media hub, but it's sort of lame even at that. This thing shouldn't even be compared to the iPod touch, let alone the fabled "Apple tablet" everyone seems convinced exists.
  • amitwadhwa83 · 2 months ago
I am wondering if HP can simply update the firmware/OS later to add a web browser to the photo frame. That would make this a useful device.
  • 911-WAKE-UP-STUPID · 2 months ago
This isn't a tablet--there is no touch screen, just a touch interface. Keep dreaming--if you want a quality tablet PC you'll have to pay $700+ for something like the HP tx2500 or tx2 Multi-touch. What, you actually thought it had a touch screen? Its a touch sensitive interface on the side. God, the awful confusion. People ARE getting stupider.
  • Name · 2 months ago
This is NOT a tablet by any stretch of the imagination. Its more like a smarter digital picture frame. This is not going to be in direct competition of what is rumored to be released by Apple. Think a little before posting kthx.

god watching this video made me think i was watching a lynda.com tutorial.

Meh! No internet browsing? What's so difficult about that? Is it about RAM?
No excuse for a major selling point like that. And marketing that as an enhanced digital photo frame seems very cheap.
Well, I hope hackers can do more out of it as companies seem to have a lack of vision nowadays.
I'd prefer to pay more for the Archos 7 http://www.archos.com/products/imt/archos_7/fea...
  • MaX · 2 months ago
The last thing we will do is to buy an HP product. HP, you cheated us once. Not again!

Concerning the comparison with the Apple Tablet, there is no comparison. The Apple Tablet will blow this crap away.
  • Presley · 2 months ago
Wow... ummm HP, just wanted to congratulate you on making a product that i think fred flinstone used back in the day. maybe next time you come out with a product that you want to "rival" whatever apple is planning, make sure it is has things people are actually going to use like a full html web browser (yea that one might have helped). such an epic failure. go kill yourself HP
  • chadw · 2 months ago
I will definitely buy one once I see what kind of specs it has after launch. I want one so that I can hack it to make it more usable. eg: a browser. However, I will get an apple tablet when they/if they come out.
  • Anon · 2 months ago
WOW! What a piece of crap!!! It's just a glorified digital picture frame. HP = Hunk of Poop!

looks like a posh digital photo frame :S apples version will be better ...... we hope
  • Shawn Rutledge · 1 month ago
Sounds about like the 3Com Audrey. Might be interesting when they show up as $79 "surplus" because they didn't sell.
