Im sure that as more and more people see social media as a way to promote their business the more jobs of this type will start to popup.

I am still learning how to use all of these communication sites which I am proud to say because the day we stop learning will be the day we stop living. Life is a learning experience. However, my point being since I have started , tinkering if you may, with Facebook and Twitter I have found and stayed in constant contact with lost childhood friends and very dearly missed family members. We are able to be together when we aren't able to be together and I am ever so grateful for that. I admire the sheer geniuses that have helped and continue progress and commend them. Thank you. Communication is not only the key to success but the key to progress. Righteous!

I think this is a great opportunity. What better way is there to communicate with the community then to become part of the community? Share ideas, notifications, and everything else. Someone once told me that you have to go to where you want to be not where you currently are. PDX is a Social Media city - Great move!

the other thing that all those people that think this is a dream job haven't considered - you don't get to chat about Xbox games and sport and gigs all day on Twitter - it's like thinking you want to work in a call centre because you like to talk on the phone to your friends. You'll be asking and answering questions on waste disposal, parking, planning decisions etc etc.

Chances are you can get someone really good in this economy because a lot of highly qualified people are looking for work and are willing to work for less, even if it's just temporarily. Look first.

I'm not at all surprised that jobs like these are popping up. The truth is the government is behind the techonology power-curve and web communications is perferred choice of communicating in business, and the private sector. They will realize that the internet is not a fad and even though those social networking sites may not last forevever the in impact that they've had has changed the way people and business connect with each other.

I guess it's a bit of a sensationalist headline to get readers, but they're not looking for someone to twitter for $70k. They're looking for a "social media coordinator" and they spell out that this person needs to be in Portland and be a good communicator. While it sounds much better to say "tweet for $70k!" there's no doubt much much more to this. You're basically going to be the digital frontman (or woman) for the county. As more and more people start to use social media, you're going to have to be 'on' all the time. Certainly I'm not saying they're expecting you to be living online 24/7, but the pull is going to be there to be answering questions, doing research, and posting far more hours than one might do in a 'traditional' job. From that perspective, $60k ("$60-$70k") for probably being 'online' 60 hours per week (rough estimate between full time in office plus 'off hours' via phone/blackberry/whatever) isn't all that great. No doubt exciting and fun for some people, but as someone else already mentioned, many times getting paid to do something you 'love' as a hobby ends up being miserable.

I really hope they find someone who is a good communications professional first and foremost with an interest in social media tools, rather than someone who's an SM geek who manages to pass themselves off as a PR-type.

12 years ago when I was hired by a media conglomerate I was essentially doing all of this but on email platforms and on AOL websites and other email platform websites.

My pay was so bad I had to live at home and I could barely afford anything. My transportation was not even paid for so I had to hitch a ride with one of my parents or take the subway and pray that the company's bus would pick me at the subway to get me to their office on time.

I could not take the financial strain so I went back to school. I've been on twitter for 2 years and on facebook and all these individuals I know want me to work with them but no one wants to pay so I decline.

Thank you so much for sharing that now people are getting hip and paying those of us who have these skills to use this platforms for a better cause.

Twitter and Facebook are tools, like email and the phone. I know a few people who still don't know how to use the phone effectively! Yet you'd never see a job posting for "phone coordinator." Social media tools are just new enough that people don't quite know how to integrate them into their work to enhance what they are already doing. Hence all this drama.

That doesn't look any different to me than hundreds of ads for SEO/SEM/SMM jobs I've seen. Hell I've even got one of them!
In reality I spent most of my time looking up keywords and search trends on insurance - and endlessly writing reports on them :-/
