Whoever is making advertising decisions at Verizon should be fired. Or shot, maybe. The marketing for this is truly dreadful. The only way this horrid spot might be effective is if it's intended to be shown during Saturday morning cartoons, because it's certainly aimed at a juvenile mindset.

I have to agree with you there. The previous advert that repeated the slogan "Droid Does", at least showed the clear message that it had more or better features than the iPhone. This spot is just horrendous, there's no real message and it just seems random to be honest. I don't even know what image they're trying to convey, it's just completely strange and to be honest: rubbish!

I also agree. I have a Droid and I enjoy the phone, but the marketing campaign tends to make me cringe. This new ad is frankly ridiculous and has nothing to do with anything.

Would be a real device if you could load more than 256 MB of apps, even with the SD card you can only install 256 MB worth. Is that the dumbest decision ever?

I agree with you. One of the reasons the iPhone is so popular, and maybe the main reason (I'm no expert), is how many apps you can put on it. With only 256 MBs to install apps, WTF good is a Droid? How many apps is that? Not much. The app would have to be mostly just a UI that relies on constantly streaming content from the web, meaning your data bill goes up if you're not on unlimited.

I'm thinking about getting the Droid due to AT&T/Cingular's big time fail in their ability to get a signal at my house. 0 bars. Nothing. Notta. Which really isn't much of a surprise when you consider that they can't even get us DSL...and there's probably 1000 in that area that would LOVE to have fast access. #AT&Tfail

Based on the fact that you can't get service at your residence, you should be able to get out of your contract without paying the ETF. They may ask for the phone back though. Dunno.

While the Android is quite amazing (And I mean Android, not Motorola Droid - the jury is still out on that one), Verizon has been consistently offering phones that were already outdated in some 3rd world countries, with color scheme ranging from black all the way to dark gray. It was one big unattractive line of yawning machines. Selling excitement for Verizon meant to offer their users their own ringtones, music and "selected" internet content from their partners at a hefty premium; (For the price of a ringtone you can buy 3 iPhone Apps). They further assaulted their customers by locking most devices from accepting non-Verizon premium content. The model of big telecom pretending to be an inventor of devices, innovator of technology and developer of content ended in 1994. Verizon failed to take notice. But with the deserved credit for operating America's #1 reliable 3G network, it was enough for many to say "The hell with apps, ringtones and nice looking phones, I just want a phone call to go through". That was true up until Apple sold its 7 millionth iPhone.
What happened? Finally innovation forced them to take notice? Now, again they introduce their first Android, faking its innovation as their own with ridiculous ads full of premature celebratory sense of entitlement and brazen claims . Dropping the phone from stealth bombers (Seriously? It's so 1991!) and in the ad discussed inthis article, assuring the public that their latest device still offers no color or fun. (It's a robot that breaks rocks and has no colorful covers!). They even put a guy with an evangelical fake smile on their web site explaining what apps are to their customers, whom they still envision as idiots. It seems like they are doing it all wrong again. They just don't get it.
Don't get me wrong though. I do think that Android will become the #1 mobile OS because while it is still behind the iPhone (not enough apps or capabilities like multi-touch or G sensors), it is closing the gap by being offered on devices from anyone. Including the Droid with 5MP camera with Flash, which you do not have on the iPhone. I am still a sucker for my iPhone 3GS though. Apple sends them without a user manual for a reason. 2 year olds learn them in minutes. I bet the Droid comes with a thick book and instructional DVD.... But in any event, it wouldn't take much from Apple to release a 4G device with 6MP camera, 80GB and an SDK capable of running apps in the background to claim back the market by storm. This is a good time to be a consumer :)

For goodness sake, get over yourselves... Did any of you see the droid being used to break rocks or punch holes in steel? It was just hyperboly, they sure managed to get all your folk's nickers in a twist... They couldn't pay the number of people who will remember this ad including who and what it was for due to its poor production value.... In the add world anything that gets the product remembered and talked about is GREAT! If everybody who thinks this add stinks pits in their two cents it adds up to millions for the company that put it togeyher. Try and do better yourselves, its not an easy job aiming for the brain dead gits who will shell out the bucks on this type of phone and service! V
Mentioning a competing product in an ad has always been a dangerous strategy, as Coke and Pepsi as well as Burger King and McD have found out to their cost.
If the competing product has both a matching, or even superior, feature set and an established fan base that strategy becomes even more dangerous.
