Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Danish Woman’s One Night Stand Video Is a Government Hoax

  • Ryan Biddulph · 2 months ago
Negative advertising is bad adverstising. They'll draw plenty of attention but the number of people who'll decide to travel to the country due to this ad will be much smaller than the number who would act on an honest honest.

It's one thing to generate a buzz, another thing to repel people.

Wondering if this will promote 'sexual tourism' to Denmark? Is that what they want to sell? (their women?)
  • mortensaxnaes · 2 months ago
The web is full of videos that pretend to be something they're not. Instead of feeling betrayed, people should remember to validate sources and not be overly naive. Accept that it's April 1st all year. Yeas this is taking it a step further, but this is inevitable when people are competing for awareness.

Recession has driven the best to the depths of craziness. (or so it seems) Some thing like this on the part of a govt agency is detestable.

I have already seen more of these kind of 'hoax-publicity' from companies/organizations emerging on the web. They keep stepping over the limits to achieve certain goals. In this case ... the objective 'getting attention' was a success .... but I think it backfired. What do the Danish women think of them getting a label which this video represents?

Ah well ... on the other hand ... if this is going to be a new way to promote tourism .... then I will suggest our government to create a respond video: the father of the child is from Madeira .... and he is a well known soccer player. You want to know more? Visit Madeira ;-)

The debate goes on here in Denmark. Some think that this, after all, is better branding than the Cartoon Controversy gave us (and it attracts less anoying tourists) - others think that technically, this is just anoter Nigeria scam letter. Deception is easy - it's cashing it that's the tricky part.

    interesting :-)

People do seem to be over reacting somewhat. I live in Denmark too and people are going slightly out-of-proportions nuts about it. Sure, it was badly thought through, but hey, it's just an ad. The subject matter is not the problem, what it's selling is: Denmark. If it was selling condoms it would be the most awesome ad ever - or?
  • neal_barber · 2 months ago
I think it utterly fantastic! Let's be honest, the things on YouTube are not real people - we all play roles in life. Yes, you need to check your facts. I think it also opens up great possibilities for social marketing...
  • samj · 2 months ago
They have just this second (~10:30am CEST) made the video private following a rash of comment censorship. The last comment I read was something like "come back in 15 minutes and you'll see this comment is gone". Seems these people prefer to rub salt in their own wounds - once the cat's out of the bag on the Internet it's kinda hard to put back in.

So, did anyone grab the video itself? You can do this in Safari by grabbing the URL from the activity window (it'll likely be in FLV or if you're on HQ then H.264 format) but unfortunately I was using Chrome at the time.

What a crazy social media weekend in the state of Denmark.
A lot of danish marketing and social media interested people from Denmark, have been discussing the subject all weekend. From is it fake or not, then who is Karen, then who is behind.
And now we are of course discussing is it ethical using peoples feelings or not, is it smart marketing or not.
The director for Visit Denmark where in the national news last night, this is a sum up of some of the things she said:

    - Denmark does not have a lot of awerness in the world, and now we got the whole world talking about us, so its the most economical effectiveness successes we ever made.

When asked about if Karen is a good reprasentative for danish women:
    - She is a woman with dignity, a responsibly woman which have taken here choices in life.

When the journalist were asking about the lying part:
    - We use different and in this case a modern media like YouTube - and on YouTube some stories are true and some are false - explaining why they build it as a hoax.

We would really love your comments from around the world on this campaign - THE Campaign "Danish Mother Seeking" is build to target future turists visiting Denmark.

Well, I'm danish and I really don't see the big problem in spending government money to fund a viral campaign, and an effective one at that. Using youtube is a natural step in advertising, and why shouldn't VisitDenmark use it too?

Calling it a hoax - well, that maybe true, but lots of other viral campaigns are hoaxes as well, but no one seems to have a prod up their asses about those.

The only thing I don't get about this commercial is the message. So, come to Denmark, have a good time, go home and become a father? Or, danish women are easy? Well, at least VisitDenmark is getting attention - And isn't that the point of advertising after all?

Well, I liked the video and it's a different approach adopted by tourism board of denmark to increase the tourist in the country.....Above all the baby in the video is really cute......

Can't help but be reminded of the uproar in Australia a few months ago around Naked Communications fake 'Are you my man in the jacket' promotion for Witchery. Similar feelings of discontent and anger from the local press who got totally fooled

If you want to position your country as a destination for middle class stag dos then this is a completely valid approach - However I suspect this may not be how Denmark wishes to be perceived.

There's a good tourism slogan; Come to our country, get wasted and live with regrets the rest of your life!
  • pete black · 2 months ago
We Americans are accustomed to having our government invent stories and then, with the help of the media, present them to us as truth. We have learned to enjoy living in our fictional world. Europeans need to lighten up and do the same. Virtual reality is great fun.
  • Gaby · 2 months ago
While yes, people shouldn't believe everything they see online, it is not something you would expect, or want, from an official branch of a government body. How can people trust anything they say now? "Come to our country, it's great" now has no integrity at all.
  • Wased · 2 months ago
Gaby, we haven't trusted anything the government or politicians have said for years, so that's not an isuue anymore.

Doesn't encourage me to visit if the only attraction they have is the fact that the women can be loose, don't use protection and will hunt men down for maintenance after! They could have at least mentioned the bacon!

    I like it, I had a great laugh :)
  • clausverticportals · 2 months ago
I have no problem with the video but I am missing a follow up strategy from VisitDenmark. It looks like they had no strategy for what to do when/if the campaign went viral. Plus at least a strategy for what to do with the attention and how to put a positive spin on it. Of course putting a positive spin on unprotected casual sex is not always as easy as it sounds :-)
  • K_Hansen · 2 months ago
What can you expect from a government organization? At least they had the wits to pull the video after they saw the reaction in Denmark.

Denmark girl are easy, but ther ist still problem with HIV.
  • flyeyeswide · 2 months ago
The way I see it, is that this video pushed the envelope regarding the social norms. Portaraying such image of a Danish woman like this resembles the image of the eastern European girls and sex tourism. If Denmark is not the country that is being discussed a lot, so such video should have taken guts to air. And in a way it shows the other side of Denmark, probably not that stereotipical.
