I used cli.gs almost exclusively as my URL-shortening service of choice. The creator/operator/owner has been very responsive to my inquiries, suggestions, comments, and just general comments. I liked the interface and geographical analytics of cligs much better than that of bitly or any of the other major URL-shortening service that offer such features.

I think the major reason that cligs is shutting down is monetization; if cligs were making money, then they would have resources to hire people to do the customer service/development that the sole person who runs cligs doesn't have the time/energy/resources to do anymore.

As a testament to just how well-run an operation cligs is, they're going to be offering an export feature for users to grab all of their data before they shut their doors. This should give users enough time to convert all of their existing clig URLs to another service.

For now, I'm using bitly but I have to re-review the other options that are out there ...

Your better off with bit.ly, but out of it's competitors tinyurl is the safest bet.

URL shortening is totally not monatizable and is no longer an issue when twitter thinks of some mechanism for it. until that time, lets enjoy building services for it! check http://smrls.net/ - a service that lets anyone create their own url shortener within 10 seconds! :)

wow, that was fast - seems like it wasn't long ago I was hearing about this 'new' URL shortening service. I think ultimately a lot of shortening sites are going to endure a similar fate for the same reasons. It's just a shame that people have been using shorteners for permanent links, which I've always thought was sort of a bad idea.

Never heard of Cligs but in any case it won't affect me as I always use TinyURL because of it's brilliant Firefox add-on.

I am habituated using tinyurl. I too have come across several people using bit.ly, but still prefer using tinyurl...maybe because I came across it first as a link shortener service.
Who else prefers using tinyurl over bit.ly???

url shortners are a joke to begin with...its a fad..will go by the wayside..as will twitter..facebook and so on...

imagine all the worthless links that are soon to be littering comments and forum posts throughout the net...

Excellent guide! I wonder, though, why there aren’t handy guides like this for setting up your own short-url service? Surely there’s a self-hosted option that can be installed alongside your CMS?

There is an alternative: http://rp.ly lets you easily make short URLs on your own domain name: s.yourdomain.com or you.ly -- that way you're not advertising someone else's service, and your shortening-data is exportable as an RSS feed, so you're never again dependent on some service with a shaky business model.

I'd like to emphasize that having bit.ly as the default for Twitter is in no way part of the decision to shut down. As I said in the post, it's a one man operation that has grown too big for me to maintain it.
