Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Censored: List of Countries that Banned YouTube

  • Dave · 2 years ago
It's unfair to show Iraq as a censored country simply because U.S. service members can't access YouTube. By that logic, all countries with a US military presence should be colored the same (UK, Germany, Japan, S. Korea, etc.)

Also, Apple bans MySpace in their stores -- would that warrant labeling America as a censored country?

Your inclusion of Victoria sits somewhere between stupid and insane. Why not include the Unites States as well, after all I'm sure you'll find corporate or public blocking of YouTube in the past, for example Libraries at one stage were blocking a list of social sites.

The explanation made the situation sound like the ban was government sanctioned and implemented. I'd consider this to be different from schools that choose to ban sites like YouTube on their own.

I'm in Thailand, and the ban has never been lifted. It should still be marked in red. The government announced they may remove the ban, but nothing's happened yet.

UAE: Youtube is not blocked anymore. It used to be blocked.

although i think the videos which require an above 18 consent are blocked.

You know my email address ,send me my cheque ;-)

Do the Thai government realise how silly their battle with YouTube makes them look? I imagine that they don't really care, but they're drawing attention to content that they don't like. Ridiculous.

You tube is blocked in Islamic Republic of Iran, and Internet band is very low for ordinary users, thats why people are not able to use the system out there, but they love freedom of information and You tube as well.

  • a proud Thai · 2 years ago
Thai people respects their kings more than the world knows or hears from any news source. This act is generally done in order to protect the respectful king from some one who doesn't understand the situation here and tries to make fun of him. Because he is loved by all of his figures, the protest against YouTube was done. Not because we want to act again all kinds of freedom of speech, but because we want to say that although you have freedom to do so, you should know that it has limit.

Just don't want to make political issues here, just to give you guys a true view that the world doesn't know.
  • angie · 2 years ago
    That wasn't fair...
  • Dan · 2 years ago
Its not too serious and illogical given the kind of content that is coming and live on you tube.

  • Yesar · 1 year ago
Well , I live in Iraq and YouTube is not blocked for Iraqi use but American use of YouTube is blocked any how it depends mainly on your connection and the ISP provider , if your provider is from Italy or the UAE , YouTube is not blocked if your provider is from Iran , then yes YouTube is blocked ....There is NO ban on YouTube in Iraq , Iraq has no official government controlled Internet or ISP service yet ... so Iraq says: "YouTube is teh best!"

Hi. I'm living in China (mainland, non-SAR), using DSL + dynamic IPs, and YouTube works like a charm to me (no bans yet). I can view videos, upload videos and post comments, it's quite fast. I think our government has only banned the chinese version(s) of YouTube (several times in the past), which are Hongkong and/or Taiwan based (not sure if they're both banned). I don't know if they've lifted it since I'm using the english (default) version of YT all the time. Well, China should be in orange, because I really doubt they, with that economic growth, would ban it anytime soon. Actually... hm, China, as for itself, is pretty much unique in this YouTube-ban topic... perhaps you should give it a unique color, lol. It's been banned several times in the past, but maybe they will ban it some other time in the future. I personally really doubt it but who knows... Anyways, it's been pretty good so far, I've been using YouTube for months now, without any problem!

    - Greetings from China!
  • narek · 11 months ago
Your inclusion of turkey in orange doesn't seem to make sense, since turkey continues to ban youtube till this day.

    Regards,
    Narek

I'm in China now, and I can only access the Chinese version of the site. So I guess they have banned the English version ... That sucks!

i feel happy that many countries banned youtube service.its the fucking video sharing website that any one can share thier videos that may be bad or good.but if you can look to every video of you tube and thier given cooments by the people its 98% bad and against of human rights and respects.it will be good site if nudity, bad comments, bad videos all the things which is against of human rights and respect will removed by the administrator.one thing dont share any thing against of any country, religion, culture, ethicity

Muslims are such cry babies, they take every thing so personal. And they are very hyper sensitive about every thing. You have to walk about on eggs shells in front of them all the time, Always having to watch what you say or do..Grow up muslims, and get a back bone.

i just wanted to let you know that youtube is also banned Pakistan because of issues of people posting videos of making stupid videos of girls which ruined their reputation and life being a islamic country,,I also heard the gov't was provoked because a girl committed suicide after seeing her video and being rejected by her parents....
