I have experienced this bug on more than one occassion with huge frustration. I know others have also, so I do dislike gmail for exactly that reason (hasn't stopped me using it but has caused problems!)

There's also a problem that many gmail acc don't mobile sync anymore. I called Google today and they said they have been fixing it, but don't know when it's going to be done. I'm just using IMAP instead of MS Exchange on my iphone!

Yes, I had this problem yesterday. I noticed it first on my Gmail for Android. I wasn't freaked out but just confused because I didn't know what I still needed to read!

I'm glad to hear this isn't just me! I woke up this morning to everything marked "read" thinking I must have already read all of the emails I received overnight while half asleep at some point, not even remembering. However, nearly everything I've received since then has also been marked "read" which then scared me to believe my account had been compromised. I'm glad to hear that it was just my iPhone reading them by accident, and not some hacker. :)

Unfortunately I checked Twitter AFTER worrying and scanning my 2 business and 1 personal Gmail accounts and checking all filters, unconnecting services like Xobni, checking again that I was not hallucinating, and finally changing passwords - 1.30am in the morning by then! I had planned to go to bed early, oh well thanks Google.
It's only a "small number of users" in Google terms but when it is you it is a real hassle.

I have been facing another similar issue over the past few days..I see that there are 15 unread emails when I login and as I click on 'Newer', some unread emails are skipped only to find that they are all marked read when I get back to the inbox..
