Mashable - The Social Media Guide: BREAKING: Rollout of Twitter Retweet Feature Has Begun

  • miketempleton · 1 month ago
It's great to see Twitter making so many improvements to its core product: Twitter.com. That's the one thing Facebook has always had over Twitter. While Facebook continued to drive more and more people to their site, Twitter users have become more and more distributed across desktops, mobile devices, and more. This renewed focus on the Twitter website is definitely a play to increase the number of people signing up for the service.

It is nice to see twitter trying to make things more streamlined and easier for everyone while not trying to add lots of features that make twitter into something it is not.
  • r0cketman22 · 1 month ago
Agreed! But I'm still waiting on this retweet feature to rollout for me, haha.

  • Zach Weigand · 1 month ago
Now all they need to do is make it a feature that if you are already following someone, you don't see the RT's of that original tweet keep popping up in your feed.
  • amsoell · 1 month ago
I believe that is the intention... If someone you're following tweets something, and then five more people you follow retweet you should only see the original.

There are a couple of bugs with it - details and screenshots here: http://www.malcolmcoles.co.uk/blog/twitters-new...

It's about time they released something to replace the existing retweet "system" of sorts.
  • Flowsion Shekar · 1 month ago
Retweeted just to see if the change happened to me, nothing yet!
  • Amar · 1 month ago
Very cool and smart integration move; can't wait to start testing this.

Just got the beta invite on one of my Twitter accounts and all I can say is, finally! It's about time the RT function made some improvements.

Thanks for the screenshots - needed a visual of the "big deal" since I use a third party client most of the time.
  • Nick Shin · 1 month ago
you're welcome. I'm a visual person myself. I use tweetdeck or hootsuite so we'll see what happens with integration. Seesmic was the first to integrate twitter lists and a lot of people switched to Seesmic because of it.

This is great but at the same time, it's kind of disappointing. How long has the whole "Retweet" thing been going on? A while and they just now get rolling it out.

Meh. I can't hate too much on Twitter. It's awesome. It's amazing. And it's the best social network out there w/close runner up of Facebook.

I can't wait till i get to see how it works. Twitter is really starting to take its users feedback to the next level. Esp for integrating the RT feature

With the lists feature, and now this Retweet thing, I think twitter is trying to bring the focus back to the site. Most don't use the browser anyway, so RT'ing has never been an issue. Not sure if this is a big deal.
  • Joseph Rooks · 1 month ago
The official retweet function will be built into the API too, just like lists — I think Twitter cares more that there are people using the service than that people are using the web site. But a very large portion of people still use the web site anyway.
  • John Schultz · 1 month ago
My understanding is that you'll not be able to change the text, or append information to it. This is possibly not as ground breaking as one might think. Hopefully, it's just a step towards a better suite of options online.
  • whatdoucare · 1 month ago
How is this "breaking" lmfao god damn retarded morons.
  • A.J. Sequeira · 1 month ago
Rats! @twitter really went through with infamous "Project Retweet" despite the overall reaction to their proposed implementation could hardly be more negative. How stupid can they be? :S
  • Gus · 1 month ago
Cool... Adding a "Like" button or something similar would be nice as well. Some things are worthy of a "Like" but not necessarily a RT.
  • amsoell · 1 month ago
Twitter has had a "favorites" feature as long as I can remember. How is that different than a "like" feature?
  • Paul · 1 month ago
Seriously? You can like a post on a forum, but you're not about to bookmark it are you.
  • Naveen · 1 month ago
Great cant wait to try it out....

I really liked the UNDU feature & the display of the "WHO RETWEETED THIS".

    MORE to COME. ^^
  • Dimple Thakkar · 1 month ago
Nice feature and nice move towards branding.
  • davidonformosa · 1 month ago
I think the retweet function is important because it ensures retweets accurately represent the original tweet. I found that often my tweets would get retweeted but the text changed and things added which didn't reflect my opinion or intention. There is also a privacy issue for people who have protected their tweets. The retweet function will now ensure that those tweets will only be seen by people authorised to see them. Ideally retweeting will now be used for spreading information while replies or mentions will be used for commenting.

With Twitter adding lists and retweets to its functions this may draw more people back to the Twitter website rather than using apps. This may present Twitter with more opportunities to introduce advertising on its site.
  • Sam Trevino · 1 month ago
    davidonformosa,

I'm fairly new to twitter and got this message on my account about a "beta" run of the retweet function. You're saying that retweets will be held as private even if retweeted? I wasn't aware that private tweets could be retweeted out to non-authorized viewers? I'm just curious since I don't use the private function anyway, but did consider it at a later date for another project.
  • davidonformosa · 1 month ago
I assume that if people have made their tweets private, then Twitter will only display them to people authorised when they are retweeted. Currently retweeting basically involves cut and pasting the text so there is no way to control how private tweets are retweeted.
  • Brian Briggs · 1 month ago
If you can't change the text at all then wouldn't it be impossible to retweet a 140 character Tweet, actually even less depending on the user name?
  • malcolmcoles · 1 month ago
Brian - it's OK if you and the person viewing the RT have the new system. But if the person viewing the RT is still on the old system (as most people are at the moment), it goes wrong. See here for screenshots of how it breaks: http://www.malcolmcoles.co.uk/blog/twitters-new...

I love Twitter. It's just getting better and better.
  • Ryan Meray · 1 month ago
HATE. I'm throwing in with Dan Zarrella on this one - They're breaking one of the best features of twitter, which is not only the sharing of the link, but ADDING COMMENTARY AND VALUE.
  • neilkevin · 1 month ago
I didn't know anything about retweet and all this things . Thanks for sharing such a wonderful post. I am using twitter on my iPhone and i really want to know more about twitter.

About bloody time... I been going on about this for ages!!1!
  • ipopic · 1 month ago
so you can't add your commentary to retweet anymore? I would regulary (if room permited it) add a short commentary to a retweet after (via @user), many retweeted tweets are limited to article title and link so I think it added to the value of the retweet.

I wonder how will they implement it on twitter clients.
  • Henry · 1 month ago
    this feature is pretty good
twitter is trying to get things easier
    good for it~

So how will the retweet look on your own Twitter page/stream. Will it still follow the format RT @username? Or will it just be the tweet itself, perhaps with "Retweeted from @username" in the subtitle?
  • Brian Wong · 1 month ago
Having used Twitter from the beginning, I can appreciate how Twitter has come a long way. Its great that it evolves. But I can't help but wonder, someone joining twitter now will have a hard time getting up to speed with the lingo and the increasing features.
  • Daniel Vining · 1 month ago
I like, although I don't foresee pulling away from third party clients just yet. It Twitter keeps stepping up to the plate and rolling out these features, then maybe.
  • twitterfools · 1 month ago
A nice addition to the twitter interface. Not having some of these basic functions on Twitter.com itself has boosted the rise of many twitter clients. Wondering if this will impact the future growth of these apps as Twitter makes its own interface more user friendly.

Ugh! I forgot to share this on twitter!
  • kovshenin · 1 month ago
Brilliant! I've been waiting for Lists over a month and they came to my account a few weeks ago, now the Retweet functionality, sheesh will it take them one more month to get it delivered to my account? How sad ... Anyways, the screenshots look fab, the idea is awesome, way to go Twitter.

The best part about this is it looks like it consolidates multiple retweets into one in your stream. Can't wait till the twitter applications integrate that feature into their apps.

When you actually read the 1000+ people you follow, you realize around 10-15% of the tweets from heavy hitters are the same retweets over and over.

This is a pretty cool feature to roll out but I rarely use Twitter from my actual twitter profile. I mostly use the echofon plugin for Firefox. . . so I hope they add this to an updated version soon!

Retweet serves a purpose, but have you ever tried TipTop Search's "Re-Tip"? Read about it at http://ftt.nu/SKH2p. You can use Re-Tip or Retweet functions on TipTop now at http://feeltiptop.com.

The Twitter retweet feature will save users having to manually copy and paste tweets and including the RT syntax, when using the Twitter website directly! I think that this will fundamentally draw users back to the Twitter website and attract new users to sign up with such enhanced features being incorporated. A native retweet function has been in the pipeline for a while, whereas most mobile, web or desktop Twitter applications/clients already have a RT feature present. It will also make life a little easier for the novice user which is critical in terms of the rate of adoptability. Therefore, I think that there could be a bubble in the number of users not only signing up for Twitter but remaining as active members and it is fundamental to acknowledfe the fact that user retention is essential for success.

The retweet feature will also help streamline the content and credit the tweet back to the original tweeter, together with a list of all the retweeters of the particular tweet, (next to the timestamp of the tweet). Furthermore, (correct me if I'm wrong here), the retweet function will help save some of those precious 140 characters as you will no longer have to include the "RT @(USERNAME)" element, which makes it easier to trace the original source of a particular tweet or subsequent Trending Topics!

    Finally they do that!

I would like the ability to prefix my retweets and also some sorta page where I can see all of the things I've written that have been retweeted.
  • davereinhardt · 4 weeks ago
Without the ability to add my own commentary, I'll probably stick to the old way of doing things.
