Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Breaking News: CNN’s iPhone App Does That (And Much More)

  • John · 2 months ago
Yeah its great if you want to pay for an app that has ads in it or if you want to pay for an app that has the same news for free elsewhere including their own mobile web app.
  • ahawkinson · 2 months ago
It's great that they've created a vehicle to deliver the news like this. Now will they report news and thoughts that are actually worth reading and watching?

Wow, look at me. Jon Stewart has made me a jaded, jaded man with regard to traditional news sources. I'll put on my positive face and say that it's good that they made the investment and are trying to innovate.
  • Roger · 2 months ago
This is your idea of 'breaking news'?
  • Ben Parr · 2 months ago
Nope, just a playful title. :)
  • Thomd · 2 months ago
    F**k CNN.
  • mattmusgrave · 2 months ago
    push notifications?
  • Robert Basil · 2 months ago
Yes, it pushes new breaking news stories.
  • bpmccullough · 2 months ago
I did think NPR's was awesome, but I wonder is I will actually use CNN's more. I use Mashable's about 3 times a day. When is the next release????
  • Grant · 2 months ago
CNN's iReport has been on the iPhone for over a year now I believe. If you search for it and read they reviews they are poor at best. Apparently it was just a bunch of spam and porn; and not user generated journalism. Hopefully with this one, they will do some kind of content checking before the stories are posted.

This is definitely a MUST HAVE app. I love checking CNN every few hours and being able to watch CNN Live sometimes is awesome!
  • Dennis · 2 months ago
Both CBS (Report Now) and Fox News (UReport) have citizen journalism apps already and have for awhile. I don't see how this iReport addition in CNN's app is such a breakthrough.
  • facebook-1329780505 · 2 months ago
Except Fox News is terrible at reporting news.

Even more impressive Ben than this app sounds is how Mashable knows this app will appear in the app store at a specific time when no vendors ever know. They can usually announce their app was submitted then they have to wait 1-4 weeks, if they're lucky, to see the app in the app store. Eg Squarespace app, which even appeared in the store 2 weeks ago, disappeared w/in 24 hrs when turned out the beta instead of the final release was actually posted by the App Store. The final release is still not there and squarespace has no idea when it will appear.
  • Ben Parr · 2 months ago
    Even Apple treats CNN differently.
  • Robert Basil · 2 months ago
    squarespace != CNN

    Get a clue.
  • leonrw · 2 months ago
ooh...looks nice..but I have read so many articles about proffessional journalists...photographers..etc loosing jobs because of "citizen journalism" and given I wouldn't mind a career in journalism myself I'm a bit wary of things destroying my career option.
  • jerry · 2 months ago
Almost as cool as the iSpoofCard app.
  • Nikki Berry · 2 months ago
looks like an amazing app, but highly disappointing that it is paid. all other apps from news networks are free why not this one?
  • Dave Young · 2 months ago
Probably because apps like this cost money to develop and support? Looks like a bit more resources (e.g. money) went into CNN's app than most other news organization's apps. And $2 really isn't that much to spend on something that could potentially get used once (if not several) times a day.

"The item you've requested is not currently available in the Australian Store" :-(
  • Ari J. Greenberg · 2 months ago
    Looks impressive.

Now if they would only spend as much time on their reporting as they did on their iPhone application, they might make me a fan.

Does anyone actually enjoy watching CNN? Every time I see CNN on TV, I want to smash the set on the ground.
  • Robert Basil · 2 months ago
Don't like CNN's coverage? Change the channel. Nobody is forcing you to watch it (or buy the app).
  • MikeonTV · 2 months ago
Sadly not available outside the US
  • Alex Tran · 2 months ago
I took some screenshots and listed my initial impressions on Posterous. I found one small quirk amidst a handful of pleasant surprises. Given what the app provides and the execution, I think it's worth the $2.

Why is this app not available for all Itunes user??
Apple is really pissing me off with the control freak attitude. They are more and more turning into Microsoft
  • G · 2 months ago
You do realize that this is completely under the control of the app vendor and not Apple, right?
  • diablo · 2 months ago
psst, the publisher dictates which territories to publish their app. Not Apple.
  • Matt Hudson · 2 months ago
Not available in New Zealand yet...depressing!
  • ajbraun · 2 months ago
    When is the Android version
  • Gee_nie · 2 months ago
Sky news in the UK have their own version of iReport [Minus the video functionality] on their app and have done for a few months. Although CNN does look very well put together.
  • jeu en ligne gratuit · 2 months ago
Good. I really have been waiting for a good news app. An there really isn't one out there.

I'll take your advice and give em the two bucks. Plus I already like most of CNN's reporting.
  • Feller · 2 months ago
As I see it's not available outside US. Well, what else is new?
  • Robert Basil · 2 months ago
Something else for you that is not new... people outside of the US are still whining about not being able to access content from a US based network.

Just because your local news station sucks you need to whine at a US based company for not supplying you with news?

    Tough...
  • Name · 1 month ago
and attitudes like THAT are the reason ure country is Epically Failing.

There seems to be no logical, even financially sound reason for CNN to not allow it's content to be delivered to the world.

Get off your high horse and become Earth focused rather than trying to rule us without sharing or the failing will go beyond Epic proportions.
  • jonathanhalimi · 2 months ago
How disapointed I was to find out that the app is only available for US appstore. Any intel bout the french one?
  • javier_ramos · 2 months ago
iReport sounds really awesome and yeah..it does sound like a potential game-changer! I'm very excited about hearing this.

What's interesting here is that CNN is embracing the "citizen journalism" model that it has certainly not pioneered. Getting people involved in reporting the news is designed to get them interested in the news and consuming it (on CNN.com or by watching CNN), but what does it do to the quality of said news? I suppose time will tell. However knowing any yahoo with an iPhone can be a reporter is a tad unsettling. Neat app, however.
  • AndyMP · 2 months ago
As with the ESPN Radio app, not available in the UK ITunes App Store :(

Thanks for the reply, too bad it shows you up as an ignorant fool....
  • David · 2 months ago
lame. CNN's charging when I can get the same stories from Reuters, AP, NYT, WSJ for free? uh, no.
  • Robert Basil · 2 months ago
So don't buy it then. Nobody is forcing you to do so.
  • jonathanhalimi · 2 months ago
Who's whining? Just asking questions, so stop being aggressive. And just because I am apreciating CNN doesn't mean my "local news stations" sucks, you dork.
  • GerardFreeman · 2 months ago
THIS IS A NICE APP!!! I will delete all my news apps of my iphone and just keep CNN. I love the CNN live! and the landscape too..a must have ..

For some unfathomable reason, the CNN app is not available for download for us in Canada. Must be some secret news that only Americans can see.
  • Kim · 2 months ago
If I'm paying for an app, even 1.99, it should be ad-free... I was all for this app by CNN until I saw that there was advertising within the app. I'll stick with Huffington Post's free, ad-free app for my news until CNN stops showing ads to buyers or offers a free ad-supported version.
  • Name · 2 months ago
I have heard that starting oct. 24, CNN will start charging $2 a week for a subscription fee for you to use this app. if this is true why bother with so many other options. not to mention you can just open safari and get your news free. I mean really? come on.

Love the Jon Stewart spoof of the app being used in the car - http://bit.ly/35jooq
