Mashable - The Social Media Guide: BREAKING: Facebook’s @Mentions Feature Is Live

  • Hugh Briss · 2 months ago
How can it be a competitive threat to Twitter? Am I supposed to start using Facebook more now because I can mention my friends? This works nothing like @ replies do on Twitter and has nowhere near the same usefullness to me.
  • Adam Ostrow · 2 months ago
The more users say "I can already do that on Facebook" the less of a reason they have to join Twitter. With all their friends and favorite celebs on Facebook already, adding this feature reduces the value prop of also signing up for Twitter (to new users).
  • Hugh Briss · 2 months ago
My point is that there is no similarity in how @replies are used on Twitter and Facebook. On Facebook the only people who see them are my friends but on Twitter everyone can see them, including the people I sent them to, even if they aren't following me. If I want to send a message to Lance Armstrong on Twitter I send an @reply and there's slim chance he'll read it. Can't do anything like that on Facebook.
  • saamimatloob · 2 months ago
Do you even know how to use facebook :P
  • Tony Anderson · 2 months ago
Yep, it's quite a different implementation. So much so that I think Mashable is doing a disservice in saying that it's like Twitter.
  • Paul Smith · 2 months ago
It's nice, but people often use Twitter and Facebook for different reasons, with a different set of people. It's more an enhancement of Facebook then a threat to Twitter, in my opinion
  • pranman · 2 months ago
I agree. Twitter is public, whereas facebook is meant for friends only. Even with this feature I'm not sure if updating my status every 10 minutes would be a good thing (Even if I want to). it'll probably just clog up my friend's home pages.
  • the_0ne · 2 months ago
Kinda sucks that (a) It's not active in lite facebook and (b) It's not active in comments. How lame.

    Scenario:
My friend starts a thread. I notice it and so do 5 other friends, but not friend 6. We talk and talk until we build up 25 comments. I refer to friend 6 in the 26th comment. How will friend 6 even know that without the @ replies? If I had the @ replies I could use that and he/she would get a notification that they were talked about in that thread.

Hopefully somebody else other than me thought that was the original intent. :(
  • pranman · 2 months ago
I think you just invented Google Wave.
  • Adam Ostrow · 2 months ago
I imagine it will be a part of Lite soon
  • Ruth Weal · 2 months ago
I agree, seems short sighted, but maybe they'll develop it further.
  • Brandon Whalen · 2 months ago
I like that Twitter is so stripped down. It forces users to create their own functions like replies and hashtags. This is a function that makes sense on all sorts of platforms. Bravo to Facebook for realizing it (perhaps this is the work of the newly acquired FriendFeed team).
  • Brien Gorham · 2 months ago
I agree with those that say this isn't really a threat to Twitter. I've only recently started using Twitter regularly and it's a very different experience from Facebook for me. Facebook = Friends/Twitter = Commentary ... and that's a good thing. I'm also addicted to Twitter in a way that I never was with Facebook, which maybe isn't such a good thing ...
  • brian fanslau · 2 months ago
WoW! This is a wonderful feature! Minus the fact it has been giving me issues every other time I attempt to send @Someone. I think this will not compete entirely with Twitter because of the open ended party that Twitter is but This feature will help Facebook compete or look like it is competing with Twitter.

Truly a neat feature and I'm sure we will see new cultures develop from this addition within the tighter body that is Facebook.
  • Chris Clayton · 2 months ago
ive been having issues too, particularly on my 'public profile'.
  • Zee. · 2 months ago
How did you find out about this Adam? If not from us, then fair enough. If it was, a link back would be appreciated (http://thenextweb.com/2009/09/14/breaking-menti...). If it was from elsewhere, a link to them is also the right thing to do.
  • Adam Ostrow · 2 months ago
a friend pointed it out to me
  • pranman · 2 months ago
Sorry to butt in - but just out of curiosity, how did you find out about this Zee?
  • Zee. · 2 months ago
I found it our via someone on twitter who i linked to in my post
  • Armen Shirvanian · 2 months ago
This is pretty appealing and continues in the direction of having everyone connected. We tend to like to click on links.
  • Daljeet · 2 months ago
Hmm, I don't know if l like the new feature, facebook should stay like facebook, and shouldn't be copying Twitter in my opinion.
  • Chris Clayton · 2 months ago
I actually disagree with you. i like it! why? because then when im mentioning someone (or something) my friends can see who im talking about.

if im going to 'fakename nightclub' and i want my friends to come with me i can just tag their page and my friends can check out the page to find out where it is, instead of me writing a whole 1 million word status update with all the details of the club.

    whats better
"going to fakename nightclub, tonight - wanna come with?"

    or

"Going to fakename nightclub tonight - wanna come? its at 4874 fakename road, mt fakename, it costs $837. dj fake, dj faker and dj fakey are playing."

  • stevenwaters · 2 months ago
They need to make it so you can integrate @mentions with friend groups i.e. @friends @business @family
  • Andrea · 2 months ago
    Uhm.. doesn't work here...
  • facebook-38207131 · 2 months ago
Is there a way that you can mention someone in your status update without their name showing up in the status? For example, you want to give someone a heads up on some news but don't really want to show their name in the status.
  • pranman · 2 months ago
Yes. Send them a private message.
  • Tony Anderson · 2 months ago
Agreed. The @ is obviously not meant as a way to send private messages. They already give you the ability to write a note and tag a person, or send a link as a message. Sometimes, the wrench just won't do the job the hammer will.

Not working at all for me; I was really looking forward to trying it out! Is it still in beta, perhaps?
  • Adam Ostrow · 2 months ago
are you outside the US maybe? seems to be working for most everyone I've talked to ...
  • Marc Lequime · 2 months ago
It's not restrained to US, I'm using it fine in London.
  • Ruth Weal · 2 months ago
It's not working on Opera Version 10 for me, but is working on IE7, haven't tested Safari yet.
  • Brandon_Sheley · 2 months ago
nice, it worked for me :)
  • sb13ck · 2 months ago
Doesn't work in Chrome for me but does in Firefox. I like it more than I thought I would, you can see the potential of having mentions integrated into a single wall. Will help facilitate conversations.
  • Zoe Nicholson · 2 months ago
sure feels like FB is slogging down a bit. maybe it is because of this new feature. and the drop dowl list box on search is not offering matching results - Monday Morning Traffic on the FB highway.
  • Steve · 2 months ago
I like that they took the Twitter feature and made it fit their much more broad set of services. Twitter could fall behind if they do not begin to offer apps that compare to Facebook's.
  • Ryan Lalonde · 2 months ago
This is pretty pointless to be honest.
It's not useful like it is on Twitter.
  • Name · 2 months ago
what happens if you link a private group?
  • CantonDog · 2 months ago
Of course people are going to compare it to Twitter...but it's not exactly the same. You have to be friends with someone (or a fan of a page) which is really different than Twitter.

Plus, even if you're a fan of a page, that page can't @ you. So I guess you could say it's like @mentions "light". It's pretty restrictive at the moment.

Can we track clicks!! What's up with Facebook analytics on this???
  • The Gary Cope · 2 months ago
I like it, though, I don't see this as being a threat to Twitter for the simple reason that Facebook is a much more personal social networking tool. Twitter is a bit more anonymous and retains a sense of privacy. I have several folks that I interact with on Twitter that I would not accept a friend request from.
  • facebook-2300209 · 2 months ago
Getting AJAX errors up the yin-yang. I think FB needs to optimize some stuff.
  • cutups · 2 months ago
it seems funny to me that people would even care if something is a "threat" to twitter
    (unless you work for them)

i like the idea of this feature. still seems a bit beta right now though.
  • r0cketman22 · 2 months ago
Needs to be incorporated on the iPhone app. Or at least let you put in @(facebook username) then automatically transform it.
  • Peta Bridges · 2 months ago
Combine this feature with the new, superfast Facebook Lite (www.lite.facebook.com) and it beats Twitter hands down
  • facebook-2811931 · 2 months ago
I tried it earlier to promote @ mentions to several other fan pages on Facebook. It worked well, however through facebook connect to twitter, @ mentions do not work at all. Already seeing increased traffic through my website and fan page. Works really well with making "FB tweeting" easy for the simple minded. Facebook is gonna dominate and swallow up the bird....
  • Jesse Bouman · 2 months ago
Does anyone know if you can @ reply to someone you're not friends with on Facebook, like you can with Twitter? Also, if you're an admin for a page, can you send @ replies to fans and not just your personal profile friends?
  • Carlos Barrantes · 2 months ago
why didn't they call their new lite version tweet.facebook.com?,
    that would be more accurate.
  • Calvin Chin · 2 months ago
I like it but I also hate it. Copycats.
  • Prometheus · 2 months ago
Innovation is dead for these people, they should be consigned to the pages of antiquity. Facebook comes from Myspace which comes from Friendster which comes from Geocities... Twitter just comes from Facebook's status update...

Is the future just going to be a continual rehash of everything that came before, the shameless co-opting of other brands and methods?

Not if i can help it, i'm off to do something new, if this is all it takes to grow and be on top of the heap, i'm sure many of you could do better, you should too.
  • Tony Anderson · 2 months ago
You must've missed cycle two of bell-bottoms and skinny jeans. That's pretty much how it's done.

Whatever it is "new" that you're doing, good luck. (No sarcasm).
  • Ann Donnelly · 2 months ago
I think this is a far cry from competing with Twitter. People still have very different styles of using the networks and will use them differently.

While this is blatantly ripped from Twitter I don't mind it so much in Facebook. It's a fun way to integrate the friends you've already made on the site in the content you generate.

Ok, let's take this baby out for a spin then, shall we?
  • N-Designs · 2 months ago
    i like the new feature
  • foxlondondc · 2 months ago
Great feature, except an advantage FB would have over Twitter is to not count the tags as words in the status. If I tag five friends with long names, I hardly have any space left for the actual status update! FB could post it under the update like it does the "like" button so it doesn't take up room in the update.

Instant tagging in FB -- what's not to like about making it easier?
