Mashable - The Social Media Guide: BORN AGAIN: Tr.im Comes Back From the Dead

  • Priyanka D · 3 months ago
I shifted to bit.ly yesterday... dont think will be shifting back to tr.im now.
  • MikeonTV · 3 months ago
I think Twitter should allow other URL shortening services in. I dont think Tr.im should be one of them though.
  • Mike Whaling · 3 months ago
If there are winners in all of this, it's probably Awe.sm, Yourls and any other services that allow you to create a URL shortener on your own domain. Why trust someone else with your links when you can control the brand and make sure that something like this doesn't happen again in the future?
  • Timo Reitnauer · 3 months ago
You're right it's about owning the namespace. Data portability is still an issue but awe.sm seems to offer an export feature. But at least you can redirect the domain to a website or landing page if one of the hosted URL shorteners goes out of business. It's less likely though because in contrary to free service they've got a business model by charging for the custom domain option.

We've also published a list of 10 URL shortening options for your own domain:

    1) I liked tr.im
    2) This IS a PR stunt!
    3) Now I can´t use it anyway, because of lost trust!
    4) Tr.im is dead!

    Totally agree!
  • Laura McLellan · 3 months ago
So why should I trust that tr.im will be around tomorrow? I was using tr.im until now, but won't make that mistake in the future.
  • blckbrry · 3 months ago
I switched to bit.ly and will never ever go back to tr.im.
  • Mat Cendana · 3 months ago
Wait for me! I'm going with you. The trust in Tr.im is gone. Bye Bye!
  • GodMode · 3 months ago
Oh yes, btw, if this is a PR stunt by tr.im, then this is a really cheap one. if ever it is proved, then i'm outta tr.im.
  • Gaby · 3 months ago
If it was a PR stunt, it was a stupid one. How can people trust it now?
  • Gus · 3 months ago
I use tr.im most of the time, so this is good news.
  • Josh · 3 months ago
    This makes me happy :)
  • Matthew Lowery · 3 months ago
NO it's not fucking suspicious! Don't be so stupid! They closed for valid reasons, and reopened for valid reasons! Stupid idiot....
    ANyway, good that it's back!

love it! brilliant publicity stunt - site now overwhelmed by traffic. By the way, fergusventures.com is considering shutting down. Please beg us to reconsider.

Nice to have tr.im back. This is one of the best URL shortener around.

they didn't make a rukus, you made a rukus, you got played and played hard. get some sleep, grow some skill and shush!
  • Aaron · 3 months ago
There are too many URL shorteners out there. Free. How can they all possibly survive? They can't. Let it go.
  • Erik · 3 months ago
I for one would be very disappointed if this was indeed a publicity stunt. I don't use tr.im, but I know of it, and these kinds of things are just low if it's intentional.
  • Mat Cendana · 3 months ago
I like tr.im's speed and uncluttered interface. However, after the shock of losing it and having made my move to Bit.ly, I won't be going back. The trust in it has gone.

    YAY!!!

This may have been a PR stunt, but not sure if this did them any good though. "Indefinite" is a very dicey word, and it can mean that they'll announce a shut down tomorrow, a week, month, year or decade from now. This probably has given them a lot of publicity and exposure (At least staunch bit.ly users who wouldnt have heard of tr.im, would now know about its existence), but does it mean, they'll start using tr.im. Not unless there is something more compelling about tr.im than bit.ly or the others. Which IMO is not the case.

Yay , tr.im is back. I started using bit.ly yesterday, but I go back to tr.im now (:
  • Aaron Ferguson · 3 months ago
I use tr.im pretty much exclusively, so I'm really happy they're staying around, at least for the time being.
  • Brandon Wall · 3 months ago
TR.IM is my goto URL service but this has left me shaken. I don't like being jerked around.
