Seems like he needs to learn about the privacy options Facebook provides...

If you send a friend request on fb to someone who is not your friend or to someone who you do not know then your profile can be deleted bec it's against fb policy & rules.

Seems one can be the biggest geek in the world but in the end being old dominates over all other attributes that one has. Bill Gates would have kept his fb profile and responded to all the requests if he was 20 years younger, I think.
  • diablo · 4 months ago
Yeah, why, like many celebrities who have a profile and not on the pages, does he remove the ability to add him as a friend?

And why doesn't he just start a fan page?

I can see how it'd be hard to determine who to accept and who not to accept if you've met so many good people in life... He just needs to use a fan page instead and ignore all friend requests.

I like the gift from Steve Jobs xD

“All these tools of tech waste our time if we’re not careful.”
I totally agree. As we edge closer and closer to an entirely technology-based society we must also bare in mind that these technologies have been put in place to help maintain and improve our lives not become our lives.

Facebook for some can be a great way to communicate between close friends and family for a purpose, however social networking has become more of a cultural extension which allows us to extend or create our own digital identity.

When you have the lifestyle Bill Gates has and the type of job, spending your time on Facebook would hardly enter your mind. I don't even think Bill Gates uses the Internet in the way we all do and why would he want to.
  • Carter · 4 months ago
"we must also bare in mind that these technologies have been put in place to help maintain and improve our lives not become our lives." - no, they have been put in place to make money off us and our obsessive, over-indulgent culture.

It's funny how he goes on about how we shouldn't rely so much on technology especially when it was his generation that brought us to this point.
  • Jane · 4 months ago

Why didn't he just get an assistant to manage his Facebook account?

I've tried to get rid of my Facebook account too, but reactivated it because it is so darn addictive. He'll be back.

I love how he had to quit because he had 10,000 friends, but Facebook will only let you have 5,000! Did he really use it?
  • diablo · 4 months ago
    Read the article.

"10,000 people wanting to be my friend"

I can't believe Bill Gates said "these tools of tech waste our time if we’re not careful.”
and that he’s “not that big at text messaging”, another HUMONGOUS worldwide trend that’s gaining market share rapidly. I don't think it's the tools you're not fans of, but rather your fear of the huge market share these two technologies are getting. Clouds Bill. Look up to the clouds!

Also, thanks Pete. I love your blog and the mock up! LOL

haha so funny! I am imagining how Bill Gates is using facebook... He's looking so much older now!
  • benjaminjtaylor · 4 months ago
This is precisely what Tim O'Reilly called "Asymmetric Follow" http://radar.oreilly.com/2009/05/goodreads-vs-t... and perhaps when we have portable social profiles not attached at the hip to one particular service or another it will become more relevant to most users (including me) who do not have massive numbers of followers.

Thats really Amazing story...and remember People, that doesn't mean the Bill Hates Facebook...Am I Right??

  • Tweeter Reviews · 4 months ago
Maybe this means that you can expect a Facebook-knockoff offering from Microsoft in the near future? Of course, the only certainty in the preceding statement is that it will suck.

I'm surprised he waited so long. Back in November, Microsoft launched an update to MSLive, transforming it from a search with perks to a more of a social network...

Common, Bill! Facebook is awesome and you're just not used to you're popularity.

Gates should either accept ALL friend requests or NONE, and then add the people he wants. Can't be so big of an issue that he has to stop using it completely. It's hillarious that he would say Facebook's no good, when Microsoft owns such a large share!
  • snydez · 4 months ago
haha, the mocup is hillarious :D

    funny!

I don't like it, when he choose "Rich White People" to be his network (see the image above).
  • Cat Lady · 4 months ago
Bill, I couldn't agree more. Just because something (some technology) exists, doesn't mean everybody needs to absorb (or be absorbed by) it. If I accepted every FB or LinkedIn or [enter name here] invitation, I wouldn't have time to do anything else. What do these people do for a living where they're free to twitter, tweet, nip, tuck, whatever! all day long? I make my living on my computer as a software developer, but when I want to talk to my friends, I call 'em up and meet at the local watering hole for drinks. The last thing I'd wanna do is spend more time on my keyboard "keeping in touch"... yikes! One more cultural addiction running amok!

roflmao - absolutely have to share this
  • BrokeBody · 4 months ago
What a pathetic attempt to denigrate.

You can always set your profile not to be visible in search or simply tighten your privacy by not allowing anyone to add you as a friend, so only you can send friend requests.

    Lame.
  • Victoria Lautman · 4 months ago
This is such perfect timing, considering the piece I recently posted on Huffington (I regret not friending Bill in time, but I sure larded up my list with many others):
