  • alison holden · 7 months ago
brilliant! Mashable, you are my best discovery from twitter!
  • Joseph · 7 months ago
yes i agree ..i didn't know most of this .
  • dcfemella · 7 months ago
I see hashtags I didn't know existed. One follow hashtag is enough, so let's stick with the original or my head is going to start spinning.
  • Joe Dawson · 7 months ago
Thanks for compiling the list, I wasn't aware of most of these!
  • Joey · 7 months ago
Twindexx seems to be on to something.
  • Justyn · 7 months ago
Thanks for the mention Joey - we like to think we're on to something as well! The reason we built Twindexx was to take the concept of endorsing other Twitter users to a more useful level. FollowFriday is great, but we felt there should be context. Why are you telling me to follow this person? What are they good at? Our timelines are cluttered as it is, so we wanted a way to help users find the best people to follow based on suggestions from the crowd.

We're still brand-new and still developing a lot of new features. We hope everyone enjoys the site and continues to come up with new ways to use Twitter!

#tacotuesday anyone? Or is that a British thing? I've seen it mostly among the UK people I follow, with a few Americans going along.
  • Penny · 7 months ago
As a Brit, I just want to clarify #nopantstuesday - I'm guessing this means no jeans or trousers, but want to check in case this trend goes international and I find myself on the tube surrounded by underwearless twitterers.
  • @torbengee · 7 months ago
    ... don't forget #TGIF ...
  • Sean O' Grady · 7 months ago

Just to note - You don't have to use the # sign or put it at the end of a Tweet, use a term anywhere and that post will show up in Twitter Search for the term. Same with @ signs, the person will still show up in search.

This is interesting - it's not really any different from traditional media programming tactics - say, ESPN's BIG MONDAY or ABC's MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL, NBC's Must See TV on Thursdays. Ownable, repeatable events. It's just been opened up for participation...we're all programmers now.
  • Gary · 7 months ago
Don't forget these two hastags: #MondayConfessions and #TMITuesday
  • shotbeak · 7 months ago
I also posted a blog about this.

For tuesday, you forgot to mention one of the most important ~
#tweepletuesday, @SarahRobinson is the chief holligan for this hashtag.
It is used to introduce one tweep to another. Great way to make a new friend on twitter.
  • Johnny Hugel · 7 months ago

I think I've inadvertently just created another meme (yep, you heard it here on Mashable first!). It's called #FunFriday. Let's just say that it intended to spread a little laughter or at least a good chuckle around the twittersphere at the end of each week. Studies have shown that laughter is very good for our health (see: http://bit.ly/lLumm ) so I guess this makes #FunFriday a healthy meme!

Here's my tweet that launched #FunFriday:

    @AAinslie Recession 'boosts Y-front sales' providing "greater sense of security" ;) http://bit.ly/ag0eJ - #FunFriday [via @BBC]
    21 minutes ago from bit.ly

If you like the concept, then please ReTweet #FunFriday and help birth a movement to get people to end their week on a lighter note so that they may spend better quality time with their families.

If anyone cares to follow me you are welcome to do so @AAinslie

    I tweet about #Markets #OSS #FOSS #OpenSource #OnlineGaming #OnlineGiving #Gambling #Tech #Causes #QRCodes #Paris #Andorra #Milwaukee & other bits!

    #FunFriday everyone!

"Daily memes" suck. They're excuses for people who have no idea of their own to fill the timeline with low-signal messages. If I wanted an endless stream of clichéd thoughts, I'd be on LiveJournal.

Also (and I keep saying this), hashtags are a dead end. Author-generated metadata is inherently untrustworthy. Any system dependent on self-tagging will eventually collapse from abuse and namespace collisions. That's why nobody trusts keywords in the HTML "meta" element anymore. Anybody treating hastags as the long-term solution to a problem is a fool.

Thanks for the #ShabbatShalom shout out. We started using it months ago! Did you know that on Friday, March 20th, the date of our 13th annual Shabbat Across America program, almost 200 Tweeple wished their followers a #ShabbatShalom?! Very cool! Anyway, since its Friday, hope you all have a #ShabbatShalom! ---@JewishTweets

This is great! I especially like the music-related hashtags.
  • MichaelWaisJr · 7 months ago
Don't forget that if you're looking for #MusicMonday musicians to tweet, seek the #trakz hash-tag that I've started with @gcn1 on Twitter.

The #trakz hash-tag is my invention, but it is inspired and derived from the spreadsheet wholly developed, originated, and dreamed-up by @gcn1. (I had nothing at all to do with the spread-sheet except for requesting a couple of additions to the musicians on it.)

This table from @gcn1 has EVERYTHING! It's not a "celebrities-to-ogle-on-twitter-list" like some amateur irrelevant listings. Instead, this spreadsheet is literally a producer's wet-dream...

There's a whole public forum thread on it on the Nine Inch Nails forums here:
    http://forum.nin.com/bb/read.php?30,628194,636045

Please send a message to @gcn1 directly if you have any suggestions for additions, since if you post suggestions for musicians to add to the thread itself the suggestions won't be received. (The thread is about the spreadsheet itself.)
  • MichaelWaisJr · 7 months ago
Dammit! I've lost my touch. Glad I checked the URL afterward.

The thread about @gcn1's list of musicians you can find for #MusicMonday is on the thread "Everything Musical On Twitter" under the "Music" section of the public site forum.nin.com . There, hope that helps.

  • Nathan Sarlow · 7 months ago
I've also noticed #followfriday has started to evolve into #FF to fit more names in.
  • Stuart Flatt · 7 months ago
Easily the worst post I have ever seen on mashable, not to mention the worst idea on twitter so far?

#followfriday, original and great, even if it can be problematic.

But the rest are just poor, if you want to recommend someone do it, you don't need to add a hashtag and a day!!!
  • Don Shapiro · 7 months ago
Ahhhh....the forces of change. This mashable blog did not create these hashmarks. It is simply reporting a growing phenomena on Twitter. This is mutating and transforming everyday and it is a good thing. Not all the # are good of course. But out of this people are creating new ways to see running post on a single topic. The users are creating this. Not Twitter. Not mashable. This is a grass roots effort.

And here is the big thing. You can't create this type of tag links with a rolling post in Facebook, LinkedIn, Myspace or anywhere else. I personally think this is the type of thing that separates Twitter from all the rest. You just have to pick the ones you like. I like #musicmonday. That's great. I have just created one of my own #betterworld where people can Tweet about ways to make our world better. We can change the world one Tweet at a time. Can't do that on any other social media.

This isn't about just recommending a person, a song or a common idea. Yes, you can do that now. This is about being able to easily search for everyone who is also Tweeting on the same subject. That is what makes this so powerful and unique in social networking.
  • Debbie Friez · 7 months ago
Thanks for putting meaning to all the hashtags of the day! I'm excited it's Wine Wednesday! Will you be updating as new ones appear?

A new (i.e. after this post was written) good one is #charitytuesday

Made me think perhaps I should start #MoreThanProfitMonday for social enterprises/ ethical business etc. Or perhaps #ForBenefitFriday. That is shorter at least.

Or #SocEntSat but I don't think the weekend ones work as well - most people are still online 9-5, Mon-Fri, i.e. at work.

    What do you think?
  • RenaR · 6 months ago
