Mashable - The Social Media Guide: AT&T to Verizon: “There’s a Lawsuit for That”

  • Brittany Bertagnolli · 1 month ago
AT&T shouldn't be able to sue for something that's the truth. If they don't like it, they should up their coverage.

Here we go again, one company against another company. I think Verizon may have push really far this time - Hilarity and Exaggeration may not come in one piece. I hope after this bout, Verizon can still find their sense of humor.

Unlike Verizon's ancient obsolete network, hence the reason they are moving to at&t's GSM standard (LTE). HSPA (At&t's 3g Technology) is more difficult to deploy when compared to CDMA2000 (Verizon's 3g Technology) because HSPA needs 5MHz frequentcies to be deployed and just like 850MHz spectrum that is hard to get, hence the reason tmobile has no 850 MHz spectrum in their arsenal, HSPA Definitely has more potential though, but back to the point Verizon doesn't have this problem so they can easily deploy there 3G network more rapidly which by the way is slow as Fuck when compared to AT&T and Tmobile's HSPA (3G) Networks.

You must be on the east coast.
  • Ross2893 · 1 month ago
and so do i with my apple iphone on the at&t netwokr, so what is your point?
  • TheCaliTechMan · 1 month ago
    Dear Brittany,

Ads can be a lie, even if they state "A" truth. For example, in a PETA Ad you could say, that "Almost 99.9% of All Serial Rapists" have eaten hamburgers, and Hamburgers are meat; therefore, people who eat meat are rapists who love to kill. If fact eating meat makes you violent because violent people eat meat!! NOT TRUE, right? But nothing in the above is flat out a lie. In fact it's probably the truth :) Yet, it's all a lie :)

    P.S. Hitler was a vegetarian.
  • D S · 1 month ago
What you created there, CaliTechMan, is a non sequitor, which is a logical fallacy. All As are Bs, all Cs are Bs, therefore all As are Cs. You're right, that is not true with the information given.

The commercial clearly says they're talking about 3G coverage... several times. With regard to 3G coverage, that is *THE* truth, not *A* truth. If they just said they have "the most coverage", and did not qualify it with "3G", that would be *A* truth. Because they are specific, the commercial states the truth.

I don't have either service, so I've no pride wrapped up in this for a switch I've made from one to the other. I have T-Mobile and their network is currently down. I'm happy. No one can bug me.

For a person with an adult's reading (or listening) comprehension, the commercial is pretty clear.

P.S. - I'm not sure what a mass murderer has to do with a cell. phone provider commercial.
  • Josh Duignan · 1 month ago
Not misleading at all.. They're clearly identifying the map represents 3G coverage.

    This from an iPhone user.
  • mccubcakes · 1 month ago
    completely agree. stop whining AT&T
  • TheCaliTechMan · 1 month ago
Completely Misleading. It makes it look like that the Iphone will NOT work in the majority of the United states. This is Flat out a lie. I have never been to a place where my Iphone did not function. Even if you are in the middle of nowhere, there is either a 2G signal, or a AT&T hotspot, and oh, did I mention as an AT&T customer I can access any AT&T hotspot anywhere for free? Well, I do :) As a former Verizon customer of over a decade I tell you I could NOT be happier about my switching providers AND phones :)

I have to say I don't blame Verizon, They have to lie. Apple and AT&T have them on the ropes, so Verizon has to resort to lies and dirty tricks. It must SUCK to have been given first choice to have the Iphone exclusively; refused, and then found that one just made the mistake of the century :) I wonder if that executive still works for verizon? If not; then good riddance :) If so, well that's one more reason Verizon's corporate culture sucks. They shed good people and hang on to the retarded dead wood like they were hoarding gold :)
  • DocHobbes · 1 month ago
Ya know I'd take a guess you worked for AT&T. They do not have Verizon "on the ropes" The only reason they're calling in the legal dogs is to avoid pissing off apple even more.
  • Brian Altenhofel · 1 month ago
I take issue with your "middle of nowhere" statement.

I live about 7 miles off the Interstate, near a shipping hub. One of AT&T's antennas is on a tower ~1.5 miles LOS. No one get's AT&T service, 2G or 3G... not for 3 miles in any direction of that tower.
  • Matt Lawrence · 1 month ago
The ad is accurate, so it seems to me that not much more can be said.
  • Traybo · 1 month ago
Ads can be accurate but still misleading.

If I said that you shouldn't buy Coca-Cola because a survey shows that 100% of people that go to Pizza Hut don't buy Coca-Cola with their purchase, I would be accurate. What I didn't mention was that Pizza Hut exclusively sells Pepsi products, therefore I was being misleading.
  • Jeff · 1 month ago
Verizon states "3G coverage" a lot in the ad... there's nothing misleading about it.
  • RA · 1 month ago
The only thing misleading is Verizon's map. Not only do they not have 3G coverage everywhere they show it, they don't even get regular voice coverage in a lot of those areas. Another reason I switched to AT&T.
  • Jon · 1 month ago
    Lol...apples to oranges comparison...Try again.
  • Marcel Jepson · 1 month ago
Ohh come on! That is just how things work and AT&T needs to suck it up!
  • r0cketman22 · 1 month ago
Generally, I think the same way about, well, almost everything.

However, you're dealing with a lot of people who don't necessarily know the difference between 3G and 2G, who have never used an iPhone, who don't read Mashable or Gizmodo on the Internet.

Think about them! We should be sticking up for others. We shouldn't let big companies attempt to mislead the population! Even though the data is accurate, it can still be misleading. There's a way for these ads to be accurate AND straight-forward.

It's our jobs as geeks! With great knowledge comes great responsibility!
  • Brad F. · 1 month ago
I think it's our job as 'geeks' to let AT&T take the heat on this one for not providing up to par service. Nothing else seems to be motivating them to improve their 3G network, so maybe a little public exposure would do them good.
  • mohagan · 1 month ago
Here, here. Agreed. Nothing gets things moving like full disclosure and a little competition. The iPhone is great, but AT&T's coverage is sub-par. If AT&T doesn't want that fact advertised, maybe they should fix it, instead of suing the competition.
  • r0cketman22 · 1 month ago
    Good point.

The vast majority aren't utilizing 3G right now, though. All they care is whether or not they'll be able to make or receive calls. A change is coming for sure, but right now, this is what current statistics suggest.

With that said, I do agree with you on at&t taking some heat. I always believe in competition driving the market and in the end being what's best for consumers. However, not at the cost of misleading the majority. Y'know what I mean? But I see where you're coming from.
  • Brad F. · 1 month ago
True enough, but I can't help but think AT&T is being a punk about this. You don't see Bill suing Steve after every single Mac vs PC ad.
  • Andre Weliky · 1 month ago
There should be innovation instead of litigation on At&t's part. At&t claims to have the fastest 3G network, but it never says in the ads that you can't get their network in most places.
  • Jeremy Toeman · 1 month ago
The Verizon ads are *far* less misleading than AT&T's claims of having the most coverage...
  • daverco · 1 month ago
I'm pretty sure AT&T's claim about the most coverage is accurate, but that's 2G and 3G combined.

But as much as I loathe VZW and AT&T both, this commercial makes me giggle, and I think if those are the maps of 3G coverage, then those are the maps, baby. It's clear.

Now, AT&T could sure point out the ancient technology VZW uses, I think it's used by Sprint and one other country, but hey, that's another ad.
  • What Haveyou · 1 month ago
If you're referring to CDMA, it's the NEWER technology and technically superior to GSM.

You should probably do some research. It'll turn up stuff like:

    http://www.m-indya.com/gsm/CDMA-vs-GSM.htm
  • Ross2893 · 1 month ago
CDMA might be newer, but it is not superior to GSM based networks, CDMA is a obsolete technology that is being replaced, ofcouse unless you are Sprint (Wimax). even Verizon is switching to GSM for their 4G network, (LTE). but if CDMA is so mush superior, then why is it that you cant talk on the the phone and surf the web simultaneously on your cellular phone? with GSM you can. but back to the main topic. GSM based is way more superior, in 3G, 4G, and what ever else. Here are just some stats to show you. HSPA (GSM based) 3G networks can reach levels of 41 Mb/s down and 21 Mb/s up where as a CDMA network maxes out at 14.7 Mb/s down and 2.8 Mb/s up. as for 4g Networks LTE (GSM based) can reach speeds over 360 Mb/s down and 80 Mb/s up while a CDMA based 4G Networks (Wimax) maxes out at 144 Mb/s down and 35 Mb/s up. hmmm are you noticing anything here? lol CDMA sucks!
  • Brad F. · 1 month ago
And don't forget that when you use a GSM based phone, switching providers is as easy as popping in a new SIM card. Or, when you're traveling and hit a new country, pop in a pre-paid SIM card. Or hell... have a few SIM cards and use them for different things. There's even a phone that allows you to insert 2 SIM cards at once and switch between them via the settings.
  • Knowing · 1 month ago
CDMA sucks? I guess that's why 3G for ATT and Tmobile are based off of it? Check your facts first. Also you can only due simultaneous Voice and Data only on 3G which is very lacking for At&t compared to VZW/Sprint.
  • Brad F. · 1 month ago
Just because AT&T and T-Mobile's implementation of 3G sucks doesn't mean the underlying technology sucks. GM sucked at cars, but cars are good.
  • Ross2893 · 1 month ago
at&t and tmobile 3G is not based off of CDMA. how can it be when GSm came out first? you make no sense, so check your facts and either way even if it is only over 3G you cant do it nun at all with CDMA
  • Brian · 1 month ago
I know the difference between 3g and other signals, so the commercial is fine for me. But then again I'm a 27-year-old multimedia professional, so go figure. I think AT&T's claim that these maps will confuse the majority of users (non-technical) who just think a signal is a signal. I have AT&T and live in Idaho and I've always had a great signal here with zero dropped calls, for the record.
  • Brian · 1 month ago
I meant to say I think their claim is legitimate in the third sentence :)
  • Russ Adams · 1 month ago
There is a major difference in the speed between 2G and 3G. If you spend the money on a smart phone and service you want 3G... end of story. The commercial is right on to the target demographic. It must be effective too if AT&T is taking them to court.
  • Ross2893 · 1 month ago

  • TheCaliTechMan · 1 month ago
If you look at the maps, AT&T has concentrated in the Classical Business regions. The two coasts, with the largest populations, and most amount of business customers. I have been to 2G coverage areas. They work just fine. You can't stream HD movies, but you could get your mail, get your google maps, and any other productivity software you need.
The iPhone works in 2G area. The Verizon Ad implies it does not.
  • Dr Robert Schertzer · 1 month ago
AT&T should use money to fight back by improving 3G coverage instead of suing Verizon for pointing out the facts.

i apologize about that, it was to seperate people that dont know what they are talking about, they seem to think all 3G networks are the same, i mean quantity does always mean quality, and that's exactly what verizon's 3G network is. when it comes to voice however they have both quantity and quality but when it comes to 3G performance, at&t's and tmobile's 3G networks constantly frog leaps that of verizon and sprint.

Well, technically if they're talking 3G and that is AT&T's 3G network then there's nothing misleading about that at all. • smplejohn · 1 month ago
Really? They mention it 8 times in their ad. I'm pretty sure the 3G thing gets covered.
  • landrygfx · 1 month ago
The maps are misleading, but If they are showing only 3G adding 2G with an overlay would only confuse the viewers. TV Ads are so fast you have to have an immediate reaction and these ads are effective, but misleading. Maybe an online comparison of the two networks head-to-head with proper maps would be in Verizon's best interest to promote at the end of the commercial.
  • Steve · 1 month ago
Well, I would consider myself "technically evolved", as I've been in the IT business since Al Gore invented the internet back in 1993. And I've been an AT&T user for about 9 years now. But honestly, the first time I saw this ad—and really took notice of the two separate maps—my first thought was, "Wow! I thought AT&T had a larger coverage area than that." So, in a sense, yes, the ad is VERY misleading, because it tends to make a viewer think that the overall coverage area of AT&T (not merely the 3G area) is significantly lower than Verizon. Granted, I've run into a few spots (usually out in the hick country of Texas) where I couldn't get a signal, but overall, I've been very happy with my AT&T coverage. I think AT&T is perfectly within their rights to sue Verizon.
  • Dudeson · 1 month ago

I fixed that sentence for you... you shouldn't assume everyone is as oblivious as you.
  • Roy · 1 month ago
Al Gore did NOT invent the internet! It was 'invented' by Tim Berners Lee when he invented the first HTTP communication, see here; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Berners-Lee
  • D S · 1 month ago
Actually, that's wrong too. The World Wide Web can be credited to Tim Berners-Lee. The Internet is more than the WWW, and was created by those involved in creating the ARPANET. The first message sent across the ARPANET network was between Douglas Engelbart's lab at Stanford Research Institute and Leonard Kleinrock's lab at UCLA. The message "lo" originated at UCLA on October 29th, 1969, was entered by a student named Charles S. Kline, and was supposed to be "login", but the system crashed before the whole word could be transmitted.

Al Gore never said that he invented the Internet, but...
"Senator Albert Gore began to craft the High Performance Computing and Communication Act of 1991 (commonly referred to as 'The Gore Bill') after hearing the 1988 report toward a National Research Network submitted to Congress by a group chaired by UCLA professor of computer science, Leonard Kleinrock, one of the central creators of the ARPANET (the ARPANET, first deployed by Kleinrock and others in 1969, is the predecessor of the Internet). The bill was passed on December 9, 1991 and led to the National Information Infrastructure (NII) which Gore referred to as the 'information superhighway.'"

So, yeah, he did give it a push start.
  • WVMikeP · 1 month ago
"A push start"....after it's been in use for 22 years.

    Cracks me up every time.
  • Kevin Fenton · 1 month ago
They clearly say 3G coverage, which is an apparently true claim clearly made. Is Verizon responsible not just for its claims but any way in which someone might misinterpret it, even if that interpretation is unsupportable? I have an iPhone and like ATT well enough, but I hope they don't have a case.
  • Kass · 1 month ago
I noticed that last night during the World Series game. I thought to myself, it used to be "more coverage" and now it's changed to more "3G coverage." It may be misleading but if it's true, AT&T doesn't have much of a leg to stand on. AT&T just needs to find whatever they're better at than Verizon and play that up. Fight fire with fire and stop whining.
  • advocatus · 1 month ago
Verizon did nothing wrong. Is that 3G map inaccurate? Otherwise, AT&T doesn't have a leg to stand on. The map clearly states 3G, so they need to suck it up and maybe make the map better.
  • RA · 1 month ago
I don't see how it is possible that Verizon's map is correct. AT&Ts maybe, and that's cool. There is no way Verizon has 3G coverage in all the areas they show. I didn't even have voice coverage in a large part of Texas they show having 3G coverage. Sounds like Verizon is inflating themselves and I call that false advertising.
  • advocatus · 1 month ago
If the map is inaccurate, then of course AT&T can make a case. If it is correct, like I said, they're SOL.
  • ShaunNestor · 1 month ago
Hahaha - funny, the first time I saw the ad, I though, "here comes a lawsuit"

Verizon, in no way, misrepresents AT&T's coverage. Throughout the commercial, they say "3G". AT&T is looking for a saving grace as they see the light at the end of the tunnel (iPhone exclusivity contract coming to an end).

Way to go, Verizon, for not being so PC that you don't cause a little boat rocking.

These maps are far less misleading than "more bars in more places."
  • Ross2893 · 1 month ago
Not even. at&t always states that they have roaming in over 200 countries, so if you just sit and take like 2 seconds to think about it, they by far provide more coverage in more places. lol
  • TamahomeJenkins · 1 month ago
Ross, do you work for AT&T?

    1. To say AT&T provides coverage in places where they have roaming agreements hardly qualifies as "providing" coverage. By that same token T-Mobile "provides" an equal coverage area in the USA as AT&T.
    2. There are only 195 countries.
  • Ross2893 · 1 month ago
no i dont work for at&t but i can read, so i go to the carriers websites and read, and no tmobile doesnt offer just as much, they off less, tmobile offers roaming in about 190 countries and and at&t offers roaming in over 200 countries, and just to let you know there are over 200 countries, check if you dont believe me, here is my source "http://www.wisegeek.com/how-many-countries-are-there-in-the-world.htm"
  • Ross2893 · 1 month ago
and no tmobile doesnt offer a equal coverage area compared to at&t because tmobile roams off of at&t's network and if you go to the tmobile stores get a pamphlet, and then go to a at&t store and get a pamphlet and compare the two coverage maps you will see.
  • TamahomeJenkins · 1 month ago
"and no tmobile doesnt offer a equal coverage area compared to at&t because tmobile roams off of at&t's network"

AT&T does the same thing with their international agreements, so your original point is nullified. Verizon has more extensive 3G coverage, case closed. Excuses aside, the commercials are only misleading to people who don't bother reading the very bold print.
  • Ross2893 · 1 month ago
so what if at&t roams in other countries, that's other countries, we are talking about U.S. coverage so you nullification is void my friend. and Unlike Verizon's ancient obsolete network (CDMA), hence the reason they are moving to at&t's GSM standard (LTE). HSPA (At&t's 3g Technology) is more difficult to deploy when compared to CDMA2000 (Verizon's 3g Technology) because HSPA needs 5MHz frequentcies to be deployed on top of the 1900 and.or 850 MHZ spectrum at&t uses for their 3G network, and just like 850MHz spectrum which is hard to get, hence the reason tmobile USA has no 850 MHz spectrum in their arsenal, HSPA Definitely has more potential though (up to 41 Mb/s on the downlink and 25 Mb/s uplink), but back to the point Verizon doesn't have this problem so they can easily deploy there 3G network more rapidly which by the way is slow as Fuck when compared to AT&T and Tmobile's HSPA (3G) Networks. (CDMA maxes out at around 14.7 Mb/s down and 2.8 Mb/s up.

Here's your original response to me, Ross: "Not even. at&t always states that they have roaming in over 200 countries, so if you just sit and take like 2 seconds to think about it, they by far provide more coverage in more places."

You bring up other countries, then say other countries don't matter. Then you copy/paste what you've said to others already. I'm done talking to you because I'm convinced I'm speaking with an AT&T shill.

yeah because i was explaining to you why they said they offer more bars in more places, you were the one that brought up tmobile and drifted off into other stuff, but i am not an at&t shill or w.e. you wanna call me, i just know a lot about GSM technology and i know even though it is superior to CDMA networks...by far, it is also a lot more difficult to deploy. and if you wanna go by 2G networks or just cell service area at&t service is just as good as Verizon's, it's when you reach into 3G that you see a difference. but w.e i can see that you hate everything that isnt red with a check as the logo so have a good day sir

Perhaps ATT should just work on improving their network.
  • Ross2893 · 1 month ago

These are both honest, to some degree, though VERY misleading! Do you want marketing or honesty? You will not have both in this country, when it comes to marketing to consumers! It's a sales war! AT&T has the right to sue, and glad they are. You shouldn't have to take a marketing course to realize that! Having been a Verizon customer for 1 year, in the past, I would not go back if they were the only one left! ...and, stop comparing poor coverage on AT&T with devices that don't work. Yes, the crappy iPhone. Compare apples to apples!
  • Maggie · 1 month ago
These ads are right on target. It clearly says 3G coverage. AT&T can't claim that Verizon is misrepresenting facts just because AT&T assumes their user base is stupid. This assumption may explain why they haven't bothered to build out their network since they've clearly suckered a lot of people (myself included) into getting iPhones without telling them that if they don't live on the coast their IPhone won't be able to do half of what its designed to do. Bravo Verizon, I wish Apple would have had the foresight to offer their product on a superior network. I just wish Verizon would work harder to bring the iPhone to their network so that I could switch.

Actually, Apple offerred their exclusive contract to Verizon first (as in before even approaching AT&T), who turned Apple DOWN.
  • Ross2893 · 1 month ago
why do people believe that? apple never offered the iphone to verizon first, they were in talks about it, but it was nothing serious because verizon's network is old and obsolete and GSM (AT&T network standard) is new and more widely used around the world and knowing apple, they want to make money and how would they make money if they went with a CDMA network about 190 million world wide as compared to a GSM network with over 400 million users. think about it

The ads aren't misleading. They're clearly labeled. And honestly for the past few months AT&T's network has been so overloaded that half my calls and messages don't get through anyway. So I'd say they're lying if they say they have reliable coverage anywhere lately. I just called a couple days ago to cancel my contract with them. I'm not paying anymore for a network that drops half my calls, loses or can't send half my text messages, and delivers voice messages a month late.

I am a current att iphone user. And I recently drove from California to Indianapolis. Over a majority of the trip I had NO g3 coverage except when I would come into major city's, and this was a major issue for me since I was using my iphone as a map/directions. And to be honest Att's 2g or edge networks are so slow you may as well not even try to use them when running a web browser or maps app on the iphone. To be honest I've been an att customer since the time I was 16. "i'm now 25" and the second verizon gets the iphone, I'm jumping the att ship. They just can't seem to get their act together, when it comes to 3g and limiting functionality of the iphone due to lack of preparation on their end.

I'm sick of trying to figure out which service is better. I switched from Verizon years ago to go to Nextel...which became Sprint...and which I learned to hate. About a year ago, I bought an iPhone (with ATT, of course) and was convinced I'd finally made a good decision regarding cellphones. Bullshit....ATT does NOT have the coverage it advertises. And I don't believe that Verizon is any better. Which leaves me with.....Z I L C H.

  • jamesdotlane · 1 month ago
Oh come on, the map shows 3G coverage, it's not misleading. It AT&T are unhappy about the results of this campaign, they have two choices -

    1) Educate the public as to what "3G" means; perhaps not a safe option as the public will likely wonder why the network with "the best coverage" provides that 'best' coverage in a <3G provision.

    2) Increase their 3G coverage; yes they'll have to dig deep and fund it. Or, perhaps more likely, tag it onto the back of a new range of price plans.
  • Geoff · 1 month ago
Not misleading at all. Pretty fairly representative of all my friends' experiences that switched from Verizon to AT&T specifically for the iPhone.

Consumer education (or lack thereof) is not Verizon's problem. Unless they are lying or stating incorrect information in the ad, there should not be any legal recourse.

AT&T is just feeling the crunch of losing iPhone exclusivity and are doing whatever they can to make people think they're actually a good carrier too (which, imo, they aren't).
  • sarah_cb · 1 month ago
I say its misleading. It says no 3G coverage where there *is* 3G coverage. This looks like the map of the non-roaming areas of like 7 years ago for the previous GoPhones.
  • Smokey Behr · 1 month ago
The comparison between Verizon's 2G and AT&T's 2G maps look almost identical, so it's a completely moot point. Their 3G maps, OTOH, are a real cause for concern, not to mention the lack of available bandwidth on AT&T's 3G network. Ask any of the iPhone users in metro areas how well their 3G is working, or how well any iPhone user's coverage is inside buildings. As a public safety professional, I want to have the best coverage, no matter who the carrier is, and unfortunately for AT&T, it isn't them, it's Verizon.
  • Chris Jones · 1 month ago
I've been a Verizon customer for years. They have the widest coverage of any carrier by far. There's practically nowhere you can go in the U.S. that doesn't have coverage. That said, I wish they would work on getting some better phones to go with that great coverage. They have the crappiest selection of Blackberry's of any carrier. They claim they're more concerned with offering the best coverage instead of the best phones. My question is, why not do both?
  • Article Reader 863545125842 · 1 month ago
The map isnt misleading. Soon enough the government will force Verizon to share their towers with AT&T... Just like AT&T has to share their land lines with smaller companies.
  • tweetrenee · 1 month ago
That is ridiculous. Everyone knows AT & T has bad 3G coverage. They shouldn't spend their money suing over something that is true, and just get better coverage. AT & T has the best phones, but what good are those phones when you can't use them everywhere?
  • Zach Myrow · 1 month ago
Not the first time a commercial assumed people are intelligent enough to read. In the end it's up to the consumer to know what 3G is. vzw labeled it accurately.
  • Abarafi · 1 month ago
I don't think Verizon is off base, here. People buy smartphones for Internet (data) access. You get that with 3G. If you're thinking about a smartphone, and you travel frequently, countrywide 3G access is important. Verizon is simply saying you will have more 3G access with them than you will with AT&T. It seems pretty straightforward to me. What next? Is Apple going to sue Droid over the "iDon't" ads?
  • Itsdatruth · 1 month ago
I was with AT&T for 7 years and finally got tired of the morons they pay to man their call center. Bad customer service from AT&T is a gross understatement. I left and went to Verizon and watched my dropped call rate go from about 50% with AT&T to next to zero with Verizon. AT&T manages to do way more damage to their company than Verizon could ever hope to. As far as the commercial, it is not misleading. They say it is 3G coverage very clearly. Verizon has AT&T beat hands down. So far the executives at AT&T who are upset about Verizon pointing out the truth, too freaking bad. Now go cry wah wah wah back to you mommies you substandard poor excuse for a wireless service provider.
  • Jason Rukus · 1 month ago
What is confusing here? The commercial says largest 3G network and then shows maps for 3G coverage. Has the American public become this stupid or is AT&T suggesting they are?

If we are going to bring up false advertising claims then lets bring up AT&T's claim they have the most powerful 3G network.

  • dmoses1969 · 1 month ago
I think if you are using a smartphone you probably have an idea as to what 3G is and probably even know if you have coverage. The ad just shows me and every other iPhone user how much better our data connection would be if we were to switch to Verizon.

I'm sure AT&T can't stand seeing the ad. The truth hurts! They could always try expanding their 3G coverage, but really expand it instead of just talking about.
  • Liz Teschler · 1 month ago
Maybe AT&T should just beef up their 3G coverage. Compared to Verizon, its just pathetic.
  • Optimistic Cell Phone User · 1 month ago
Verizon has a right to say that they have 5x more 3G coverage; AT&T has a right to sue them for misleading advertising (isn't that a redundancy?). The lawyers will get rich and the loser will likely pass along court costs to their customers in the form of higher cell phone fees. Whether it's misleading or not, regardless of the company, it's the little guys who get screwed. Such is the way of American capitalism.

  • superchunk · 1 month ago
Nope, ads should stay as is. There is nothing wrong with them and they clearly say what they are comparing, 3G. Its AT&T's job to educate their customers or potential customers on the differences of 3G and other types of networks.

I guarantee you a Verizon rep would tell a potential smart phone customer why Verizon is better since 3G is faster. AT&T needs to step up and market better. Not let Apple do all the work.

  • brian · 1 month ago
I think this is a very good example of comparative advertising. They clearly state in rather large print this is a 3g network to 3g network comparison. ATTs own website pretty much show the same picture...though its not a pretty map showing you how bad the 3g network coverage is. Rather they show the national GSM map and then make you search a list of cities that have 3g coverage. Now I understand why they whine about how the iphone is putting stress on their network. They hardly have a network! I understand the complain is that its up so fast you can't process the big words at the bottom of the screen. But notice they didn't sue verizon to keep the map up on the screen longer for customer's to read. Perhaps ATT should invest in its network a bit.

As a personal "fan" of AT&T, I think AT&T needs to grow up, and deal with the fact that facts are facts. If AT&T does not want customers to know they don't have as much 3G coverage, they should spend their money on improved 3G coverage, and not legal battles to hide their lack of 3G coverage...

The Verizon ad (if 3G coverages are correct) is valid - suck it out, and deal with the facts AT&T!

I find it interesting that they are pushing this. I had to drop AT&T entirely as I live in a void in SW Las Vegas where we got almost no coverage and could barely make voice calls much less access the internet. AT&T is going to face an uphill battle to get thier face back after the massive issues with their data network.

I don't think the ads are misleading at all. I'm not a very technical person, but I do know that 3G referes to a specific speed or network connection. Anyone who has a phone or internet connection in this day and age should know that. I'm an iphone owner. I have 3 phones and an aircard on At&t and I think the ads are pretty accurate.

  • cajunconnect · 1 month ago

in the ad they specifically state its 3G coverage. You'd have to be a moron to miss it. I think the ad is fine, AT&T needs to embrace the competition and come out with a rebuttal add. That's what business is about. I'm an iPhone owner myself, and wont switch from AT&T until another carrier gets the iPhone with better technology. AT&T is just trying to fight while they can knowing in the near future they are losing the exclusivity of the iPhone and are upset because Apple and Verizon are in the talks with the 4G technology.

My two cents to AT&T- Get AHEAD of the curve, not behind it :)

I was a Verizon customer for years. Just switched over to AT&T two months ago. I have NOT experienced the supposed dropped calls problem. I have No problems with my internet. I live in the SF-BayArea. Service is really not a problem. Outside of the BayArea, Most people text and email much more than they call anyway, but I have not had issues with service unless I was in an underground parking garage. By the way, I had lots of dropped calls with Verizon in Contra Costa county. We made a joke out of it when we called each other back and said " well, can YOU hear me now?" Dropped calls are a fact of life. It's a matter of where, and when, and NOT "IF" it's going to happen.

I absolutely LOVE the iphone. Verizon has no good smart phones. If all you do is call; then stick with Verizon and get their cheapest no frills plan; but, if your phone is a business/productivity tool; then you are crazy to stick with Verizon. If you are looking for a "cool" phone that has not been "crippled"; than you are even more crazy to stay with Verizon. That's it, end of story.

Verizon had managed to keep me as a customer for years by promising the "magical-does-everything-phone-that-we-wont-cripple" that will be released two months from now. I don't believe them. I also don't believe Motorola. They [Motorola and Verizon] screwed me when I bought a Razor V3C with power issues. I changed the battery 3 times in 6 months and the charge still lasted less than a day. When I finally got sick and tried to return it ... Well shucks, it was past the deadline for the return.

I am DONE with Verizon lies forever. I will NEVER switch back. I am a LOT more productive now with the Iphone than I have ever been before. Verizon's problem is it's corporate culture. They are lazy and stupid, and their days are numbered. I am sure they will screw up the android like they have done all other phones. It's not the phone's technology; it's Verizon that's the problem.
  • inforodeo · 1 month ago
I think the key phrase is "I live in the SF-BayArea".

Since the majority of Americans don't live in the Bay Area, we don't have the option of getting good coverage with AT&T. The company focuses their effort on a handful of key metro areas, figuring the rest of us don't matter.

I've also had both carriers (and a handful of others), and while it was certainly frustrating that some of the features of some of the phones had been disabled by Verizon (to enhance stability/security, and - i suspect - profitability) or the manufacturers (due to contractual obligations to other carriers or to make room for additional features required by Verizon) ... overall I can sincerely say my customer service, coverage, data connection, and equipment I've experienced with Verizon have been superior than other carriers in the areas I've used them.

Anyway, congrats on living in an AT&T focus area!

It's a fact of business, every company portrays and manipulates the facts to best represent their business needs. If those are the maps for 3G coverage then those are the maps. Yeah, it may be misleading as it does not include AT&T's 2G coverage, but AT&T's hands aren't exactly clean either as someone said earlier.

Suck it up AT&T, don't be a pussy, and counter with your own ad.

AT&T probably can't safely counter with their own ad ... i mean ... they published their coverage maps to brag and look where it got them!
They lack the service/customer support/technology to make any realistic claims that can be backed up by simple facts. They only thing they've got going for them (and I think it's almost overa) is their exclusive contract to sell iPhones.

Former AWS Tech for 7 yrs - lost my job to someone in India. Who cares about the iPhone? ATT is the worst. You are paying tons of money for a service that is subpar. And when you want TS you can speak to someone in India who is reading off a script. iPhones can't even receive MMS from other carriers customer's phones. If a company can't get an MMS through to their little pet phone, what makes you think they can get you the voice coverage you need/are paying for? I love my Verizon service - I don't need a Smartphone, I have a Netbook that fits nicely in my purse. And unless I'm in the middle of the desert, I haven't found a place that doesn't offer free wifi.
  • inforodeo · 1 month ago
funny you should say that (about the desert)! I was in a desert over 150 miles from the nearest city in Southeastern Oregon/Southwestern Idaho, and was able to surf the web using my Verizon smartphone. another time, in another desert, i got a phone call and text messages while hiking - again on my Verizon cellphone. I received calls on the same Verizon Phone while wandering through a forest in Southern Mexico, and while shopping in Taiwan.
On the flip side, I was standing in a wide-open parking lot in West Seattle (WA), and couldn't maintain a signal on my AT&T cellphone, and until last year, AT&T didn't have service in my neighborhood.

funny how they're fine with skipping fine points of the truth when they're advertising their services/goods, but once a competitor calls them on it, they're all about the details! it was probably too straightforward for Verizon to hit them head-on with the other lame stuff: "AT&T: we'll eventually get your iPhone activated" or "AT&T: we changed our name back after merging with Cingular because they were actually worse". Who can forget their awesome roaming plan from the late 90s, where if you spent more than 60% of your time on a non-AT&T network, they'd terminate you and charge you the early cancellation fees?
The truth is, AT&T is big on hype and low on results. They really don't have that big of a network, and what they do have is second-rate technology to carriers like Sprint and Verizon. It's awesome that they have the iPhone and other flashy toys, because it gives their customers more to do while they're waiting to get a signal.
The coverage map came from their own material ... if they didn't want their competitors showing them up, they shouldn't have given out that information ... the more savvy consumers would have figured it out on their own anyway!
(sorry to be so anti-ATT, but in the three times I had their service, it was terrible, cost a lot, and left a bad taste in my mouth ... while Verizon's service has consistently worked for me in numerous places where AT&T's STILL doesn't work for my friends phones. When we bought a new house in a small town 70 miles from the nearest city, our AT&T-using realtor couldn't find her way with her phone, but my Verizon phone with the GPS service led us right to the front door ... and that was 2 years ago.)

aren't all wireless ads aimed at the 'non-technical'? 'more bars in more places'... what the hell is a bar? Does it mean something? Well, when I have two bars, try to place a call to subsequently get 'No Service', seems like the technicality of the bars is over my head. 'Bars' aside, even I understood that these were maps of 3G. Perhaps Verizon should twist the knife further and make a 'this is simply where you actually have coverage at all' map, and watch AT&T whimper. Simply AMAZING that AT&T has money to file ignorant lawsuits but no money to expand their 3G coverage....

Ok just to clear a few things up for those of you att customers who have no clue. att network overall is a MUCH older techknowledgy then the one that verizon and sprint use. The network called CDMA was the first true Third Gen network and is far superior to GSM used by att. The basics of the CDMA allows verizon and sprint to allow up to 1000 calls to be connected on a tower at any given time verses slightly over 120 for att. On top of that verizon uses whats called a rake antena that will connect to up to 3 seperate towers at the same time giving you over 3k slots to make a call on, and if your conected to more than one tower and one tower drops a call you still are rceiving signal from 2 other towers. Att drop call rate is arond 7% verizons is under 2%

so bottom line verizon provides a much better service, they never said it was cheeper just better so no one can complain about that. And if you actually take the time to do some research apple is looking to jump ship from att, especially after att was rated the worst cell company for customer service in the country(see cnn atricle from 3 weeks ago)by indipendent polling. And between the testing of there new 4g network and with google jumping on board and bringing andriod 2.0 to verizon they are positioned to be the strongest cell phone carrier in the country. so keep your iphones, and keep having fun getting them worked on and ill enjoy my android and laugh at all of you trying to find a hot spot.

As far as the ad is concerned, its pretty clear that verizons is discussing 3g coverage and maybe insted of worrying about a competitor calling out there service maybe they shold work on expanding it so they can compete. mhh thats ok spend your money on law suits and not on your customers, that makes the most sense

It clearly shows 3G. I understood from the first time I saw it. And what about the "More Bars in More Places" ads. What kind of bars? 2G? 3G? That is misleading. The Verizon ad is not.
  • mikemonty · 1 month ago
I honestly think it's dumb, if AT&T is pissed that people are, on a large scale, being made aware of the lack of their 3G network they should do something to fix the damn problem rather than waste money suing another company for making the truth known. Now if Verizon was LYING about the 3G coverage, THEN AT&T would have a case against them. But they are not. So for now AT&T just took a small issue and blew it out of proportion, in my opinion hurting their brand's image.

So basically their case is based on their customers' stupidity and inability to understand the product they are selling?

Ads comparing products and services should be illegal, like it is in Europe. When a product is compared to another product, the company running the ad will never tell the whole truth.
Advertising should only be done on the basis of the product being advertised and leave the comparison up to the consumer based on advertised facts.
  • Michael Roney, Jr. · 1 month ago
Ads are all about wording and fine lines.
That's why every cell phone company can claim to be the best.
I don't use either company. I have no interest in using either company.
I mostly ignore the ads when they come on, but I don't find them misleading.
I just laugh and change the channel.

I like to talk fast and keep things short. Thats why I love ATT. When ATT drops my call, I just assume the conversation is over. No service in the exact same area I had service in yesterday. I know that's ATT telling me, "you dont need to call anyone right now, no one needs to talk to you, why not play a game (not an online game). The iphone is so cool that it would probably consume me, if not for ATT's sporadic and anemic coverage.

I have witnessed this first hand, my sister was going to switch from Verizon to AT&T to get the iPhone and didn't do it just because of the maps in the ads!

if people are not smart enoughto read the 3G coverage print and/or don't understand what that means, then they do deserve to be AT&T customers.

Maybe AT&T should improve their 3G coverage instead of wasting money on a lawsuit. As an iPhone customer I would love to see them work on the right things and stop wasting money on things like this.

I work for AT&T Tech Support, I know that the map is misleading, however. do your homework. If its not the phone you want, or the service you need. find a different company. Dont be one of those "non technical" customers they are talking about. If you need service in the mountains of Montana, AT&T shouldnt be your first choice. at some point consumers need to be smarter in the choices they make. I dont care if you use us or Verizon, go with the big "V". one less tard that will call in telling me that the network sucks. it keeps turning my phone off
  • Brad F. · 1 month ago
I think AT&T should suck it up and acknowledge the fact that their 3G coverage sucks. It was clearly labeled as meaning 3G coverage areas. That's not misrepresentation. What're they going to sue for?
  • Brad C · 1 month ago
We all know this is the truth, and to who keeps on going on and on about how "obsolite" cdma is, well who gives a crap.. honestly it's going to be replaced end of story, and i guarantee you that verizon will have the first fully operational LTE network and still have better coverage than at&t end of story.

Seriously i have a Verizon broadband card and an at&t sim in my netbook, and my VZW card outperforms my at&t card 9/10 times. at&t's latency is terrible (i usually hit around 300ms, and this is on 3g) and my vzw card is usually around 100ms, and my speeds with vzw are consistantly above 1Mbps but usually around 3, and that's even at peak times of day on campus (i am here at Arizona State). My at&t data is lucky to get 200-300k during the day, and SOMETIMES i can hit around 1Mbps at night..

you iPhone fans need to just get over yourselves, i ended up just unlocking mine and taking it to T-Mobile because guess what, i like to actually hear the other person i'm talking too. at&t flat out told me i was lying about my voice quality when i was in Columbus, Ohio.. so i paid the ETF and went to T-Mobile and i couldnt be happier, their 2g network in my experience is more stable than at&t's craptacular 3g network.. at least i get 200k at all times.. i was lucky to hit 100k most of the time when i was on at&t, and i am on a university campus now so i have WiFi everywhere i go if i need it, but when i need my 2g data to actually work, it's nice to know it'll work just fine without my pages timing out like they always did on at&t.

It would be lawsuit material if it wasn't so true, lmao. All of my friends with iPhones never get service and yes, only an idiot thinks the map is their wireless phone coverage. I feel like AT&T need to step up their game. Verizon definitely has a better 3G coverage (and 2G coverage for that matter). It is clearly stated that the maps are comparing 3G coverage. If a consumer doesn't know the difference, shouldn't they consult their closest techy friend or at least google? We live in a time where information is readily available and this so called "misleading" is not that big of a deal. Again this is only my opinion, but I have little tolerance for people ignorance on issues like this. Mainly, AT&T for getting up in a knot over the issue when its nothing but the truth.
  • Guest · 1 month ago
AT&T can't cry (or shouldn't be allowed to) because of their business model is different than Verizon's. It's clear in the commercials that third-generation networks are being compared. Should Apple be ordered by a court to pull their Mac vs PC commercials which are far more misleading than a direct comparison of 3G networks? This isn't some case of trying to stick up for an uninformed audience, give me a break. The ads simply and effectively point out a significant difference between the two services and these comparisons are bad for AT&T's business. It's a perfect ad strategy and not nearly as offensive as the "I'm a Mac" campaign ... or any political ad, for that matter.
  • HeatherO · 1 month ago
First thought: waaahhh! I thought the ads were brilliant! It's up to ATT to provide great service and let others know (if) they do. They have how much of the market??
I'm sure that they're running scared over the android, but I 've always said if cell phone co's spent 1/2 as much money improving their service (read: coverage AND customer service) they would have more biz, less 'competition' and happy customers (which would make those ads less effective now wouldn't it?:) IMHO!

I am an AT&T customer and iPhone geek. When I first heard the comercial
I thought I was hearing ( there's an app for that) not map.
AT&T has a good case, I get great service all over the Map
  • MJGSocialMedia · 1 month ago
If your average "non-technical" customer does not understand, why doesn't AT&T run counter ads to explain instead of just suing. AT&T would look far more reputable by explaining the difference in their service than simply by suing Verizon for Verizon's explanation.

I've had ATT for about 8 years and never had problems till I recently moved to Montana where I'm lucky when I can access the Edge network. I can make phone calls in most places, but its painfully slow using anything else on the iphone. I'm kind of hoping ATT will get sick of having to pay my roaming costs (since they don't own any towers around here) and terminate my plan so I can jailbreak my phone and move to Verizon... Rumor is though, ATT is buying out a local wireless company, so we'll see what happens.
  • Chad · 1 month ago
I think it was Verizon's intent to mislead consumers to think that At&t doesn't have coverage at all in those areas. Also, that map can't be correct because I have 3G coverage on my At&t phone in an area that is showing as grey.
  • Rebecca · 1 month ago
this add is so stupid its a smartass "theres a map for that" yeah but do they have the service to back it up verizon? NOPE.. their service was shotty when we hand them then switching to AT&T my sevice is amazing for 30 dollars i get internet, visual voicemail, 85,000 applications at my disposal, google maps, email, and an iphod in one...
verizon charges for each of these things..

the choice is clear verizon is shaking in their boots and have to use 3rd grade tactics to do it. i hope they get their asses handed to them in this law suit!!!!!!!!!!!!

If does represent the real 3G coverage from AT&T then, what AT&T is basicaly saying by "it can misslead non-technical cusumers" is "some stupid consumers may understand that our 3G coverage is low, and we didn't want them to know"

I hope Verizon wins this one.

Well as an IPHONE user 3Gs to be exact, people dont really understand 3G and what it is. we are still expanding the 3G network at AT&T but at the same time you have to understand what MHz that is considered to be 3G and how radio waves work and MOST of the nation doesnt understand that science. With this being said, the MHz of 3G networking is so high that its almost unstable, meaning that these waves will practically bounce of off anything and these maps are all guessing games and can never be a complete depiction of what the coverage is due to taking in geographical and weather factors! radio waves will bounce off of anything of high density or something with high reflectivity, hense, CARS, HOMES, MAJOR BODIES OF WATER, TREES, LARGE AMOUNTS OF FOILAGE, and so on. Customers do not understand the techonolgy they are using but yet want it to work and be just as reliable as a solid landline service, SORRY! but when you are calling AIR it is much harder to gurantee its going to go through, and thats any Cell phone provider! The only people that we have to thank for that is the lovely FCC for their beautiful regulations on where, when and how many towers a company can have in areas. and As far as the iphone, we give you the network at AT&T, but if your phone screws up, thank APPLE. they make it. AT&T does not make cell phones and neither does any other network provider! So as far as the lawsuit goes i would definately see why AT&T is upset over this and is false representation of a network that has been there for the U.S. since the beginning of the telephony industry! its in our name! American Telephone & Telegraph (AT&T). Also for Verizons lovely little display of mapping, who can say they can offer customers even greater data speeds on their 2G network and even on the 2G network with AT&T you can still talk on the phone and browse the internet at the same time with our technology standards! if anyones breaking through its AT&T. Sprint even states they have the first in 4G, well thats good, what happened to their 2G and 3G network? it fell apart? and now they need a new marketing idea to gain their customer base back, before they decide to go under! well, as a technician at AT&T i see what our network can do and also as a long time customer of AT&T of 11 years, i will never doubt my network or my company in how our return of operations group manage and continue to upgrade our network and continue to have continuous ideas of how to connect our people with their world, everywhere we live and work, and DO IT BETTER THAN EVERYONE ELSE!

AT&T seems to be like the bully that can stand criticism. First the Google Voice app, now this. AT&T should stop spending money trying to sue people and spend that money on making their network better.

My AT&T 3G phone didn't work in Plano TX (a Dallas suburb), it didn't work in Oklahoma, it didn't work in Topeka Kansas (the state capital). When I was in a place with coverage, basically NY City, it worked great, anywhere else? It did not work at all. There is nothing misleading about that ad as far as I can tell. I was shocked that Apple chose this company, because there is no way out that I know of. Apple's iPod was great because it made music accessible to non techies, and then they go and lock the iPhone to the AT&T network? Bad Apple! No bisquit!
  • Eric · 1 month ago
The commercial clearly mentions 3G a number of times (5 times to be exact). Whether you are technologically saavy or not, 3G is becoming a household term.

Good for Verizon for creating a better 3G network, and good for their Marketing Team for figuring out how to effectively promote it.
  • jayalter · 1 month ago
Well if they are comparing "3G" coverage which the image above shows, then what is the point of an overlay showing AT&T's slower 2G coverage. It's not an Apples to Oranges comparison. It's an Apples to Apples comparison! Should I be allowed to file suit if my neighbor shows a pic of his yard and my dirt patch and get pissed off because he claims to have more grass than I? If it's true then it's true! And for the record, the image above is clear and concise. At&T is just looking for money out of Verizon so they can build more 3G coverage! When it's all said an done, both companies will raise the consumers rates to cover the cost of the legal fees!
  • patbitton · 1 month ago
I don't think the ads should continue in their current form. Most normal human beings don't know the difference between 2G and 3G. If these were relabelled as slower and faster, it would make more sense to the average consumer. Verizon is also being a little disingenous about what it offers where - the area where I live appears to be solid red in their map, but their phone coverage here is spotty in the extreme.
  • Mike · 1 month ago
It's a 3G map not 2G. at&t will just have to deal with the truth for once in their life.

Until about 2 years ago I was an AT&T customer in the midwest (Omaha to be precise). Based on my personal experience it felt like the PHONE coverage was as limited as the 3G coverage shown on the map. Dropped calls, garbled connections - cannot say anything good about their coverage. Switched to alltel, wish verizon hadn't bought them but it's still MUCH better than the crap that AT&T called coverage.

do anybody remember the commercial a few yrs ago when att claimed that they have the fewest dropped calls? and they have to pulled that commercial out due false information. the fact is verizon is the only wireless carrier that have the fewest drop calls. the only thing that makes att strong is the iphone even with the iphone verizon is still the largest wireless carrier. iphone is nice but not with drop calls and poor data connection.
  • MLG · 3 weeks ago
See the funny thing, this just happens to matter where you live. We had sprint, and got NO coverage in our home. We had to run outside if it was a important call we couldnt afford to drop. My husband had Verizon, which I hate, because thier customer service is poor, atleast here where I live, again it all goes back to where you live, He had the internet card through them also, he ALWAYS got disconnected, every 5 mins. I have sprint internet card still, which amazes me because I get good conection with this, but not my cell phone! We switched to AT&T to the iPhone, we get GREAT coverage here, never lossing our signal its always strong, so everyone has something bad to say about a company, it just matters where you live, thats all plain and simple! although I am not a huge fan of the iPhone, I would much rather have a blackberry, but I will stick to my phone and AT&T company, just because we get great coverage, and honestly, thats all that matters!

"his apparently hasn’t been enough to satisfy AT&T, who continues to press on with the suit alleging the ads are confusing especially to non-technical consumers."
