Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Ashton Kutcher Hits 1 Million Twitter Followers

  • Ben Parr · 7 months ago
The entire affair made for good primetime social media drama.
  • Kellie · 7 months ago
I can't tell u the last time I read a newspaper. Everyday I hear a news story on TV that I heard days ago online at digg.com or twitter.com so to me this was validation that NEW MEDIA is here and no one can deny it. Don't forget the guy who tweeted his arrest or the first earthquake tweets that were ahead of the ap wire etc..... twitter has been a great source of news for awhile now!

The toughest part of working for Mashable has to be pretending you care about this stuff. "Yes, Pete, LOVED the latest story about Ashton Kutcher's Twitter numbers. Genius!"
  • Ryan Edward · 7 months ago
I was at Disneyland today watching the Aladdin musical and the genie stopped in the middle of the show and said "Aladdin is getting off the carpet and the carpet is tired..I'm twittering"

So yeah it's uh way mainstream. I've been using twitter since it was twittr. It blew up this year for sure.

This is the turning of the tide & the power is now in the hands of the people. We are the source of our news...we will be the leaders of our news feeds & the river will continue to flow in this direction, the dam has broken & we have freed ourselves from BIG MEDIA!
  • Tony Cosentino · 7 months ago
Hi I watched it like it was the first moon landing as P.ditty put it. Got really wrapped up inthe excitement.

Here is a great collage of what happened. The live follower numbers for both parties, Demi kissing Ashton in congratulation with a bottle of champagne in the foreground just opened to celebrate.

If it were not for a good cause (anti-malaria efforts) on the part of @aplusk, I would not have "followed" him...Good social media drama AND a worthy cause...

Let's wait what @Oprah has up her sleeves...How would she top that?

I think the internet is securing its position to beat the "MainStream Media" and I believe the world is thirsting for it! The winds of change are blowing in all directions, but firmly breezing those old ways into our past!

Oh the plans I have, and I like so many appreciative Entrepreneurs look to cast our sails into these winds and race to the front!

Few things are comparable to putting a man on the moon.

Twitter is more like putting a man on your front porch.

Guys, this is not a significant moment.

Move along, there's really nothing to see here...
  • Thierry · 7 months ago
Congratulation. Twitter has really revolutioned the way we stay in touch with familly, friends, colleague and relatives.

ASHTON WON!!! ASHTON WON!!! ASHTON WON!!!

But what is the meaning of this victory to the marketing world? What did it prove?

In a single word, Transformation. This was the defining moment of how the internet won over the Television. It is, as Ashton said, “A changing of the guard…from the old way of consuming media to the new way of consuming media.” Not only did CNN have the advantage of having continuous air coverage, but they had not one, not two, not three, not four, but over five nationally, and in fact, internationally recognized faces and names plugging their Twitter account. And yet Ashton still won.

So, how is this transforming? As Ashton said “The new wave is here…We get to choose what we want to see and don’t want to see and who we want to have broadcast.” It no longer resides with the big companies, “the Giants” forcing you to watch endless commercials, listening to their points of view, or buying into their ideology. But the power now rest firmly in the hands of the consumer. This simple competition has put forth what we should already know. Consumers, People, are going to the web for their entertainment, for their personal growth, and for fulfilling their lives. We now have, more than ever in the history of mankind, the ability to connect across all boundaries, across all oceans, and right through the middle of any misunderstandings that our governments have with each other. We have the power to determine what we watch, what we let into our lives, and with a simple click, close off what we don’t like. No longer are our lives dominated by mass media force feeding us what they want us to hear or what they think we should hear.

It’s remarkable that a multinational news and cable organization would compete with a single man and lose. It’s ironic that they would tell their viewers to go to the web. The very medium which will one day replace watching CNN on the television.

The masses have spoken. The dice have been cast. The internet is the ultimate victor here. “Victory is ours!!!!”

Will the marketing world wake up? Will they see that the consumers they are spending millions trying to reach on the television are not even there any more? I don’t know. Perhaps if they are visionaries they will. But if they stand steadfast in their resolve that television will continue to be their best channel, then they will go out the same way that the newspapers and print media are today…a slow and agonizing death.

Congratulations Ashton and thank you for your efforts to rid the world of Malaria. Thank you also for the clarity of this message: the world has truly gone to the web.

Good point, but I think it's time Ashton made a real bet. A MAN's bet. Which is why I've issued this challenge:

    http://tr.im/apluskvsjoe

Please help me throw down the gauntlet. Don't you want to see Ashton Kutcher mowing my lawn in a dress? Doesn't everyone?
  • Val Web · 7 months ago
    now theres a thought!
  • Sellsue · 7 months ago
A.K. confirms (as if we could forget) it's all about branding and self promotion. In my opinion something that would be better left to his publicist. But props to him for stepping out and proving the power of Twitter.
Celebrities' use of Twitter helped to introduce and validate it as a "new" mainstream social media to the general public. I followed him briefly, until I realized that in my case Twitter was NOT his friend. So long A.K. Twitter on.
  • Evan · 7 months ago
    Cool! I guess it's a milestone...I bet the demographic is primarily < 25
  • Reid · 7 months ago
Social media (read: information from individuals) is always going to need a middleman. There are going to need to be trusted voices that can pull the truth ("truth") from the rumor, and cull the most interesting stories from the vast amounts of noise. Whether those middlemen will be the mainstream media outlets that have adapted to listening to individuals or other individuals who manage to create a good reputation...well, I guess that's the question.

The big takeaway I got from the Kutcher/CNN thing is that, even though CNN was ahead, Kutcher was actively pulling for more followers on his account, whereas CNN just kept doing their breaking news thing. Self-promotion and rallying your existing fans still matter.
  • Joe Ascanio · 7 months ago
It's a bit sad, really, that the rebellious, individual nature that kick-started the web revolution is now falling prey to mainstream celebrity silliness. Does Kutcher really have anything THAT IMPORTANT to say that warrants 1 million "followers"?

And also, being a Twitter user myself (@terracurve), how well does his "twittering" actually reach his followers? How well does anyone's, for that matter? Is Twitter inevitably heading the way of "MySpace dillution", where "more is better"?
  • Val Web · 7 months ago
i dont get it either, who cares. there r more important things going on
  • Joe Ascanio · 7 months ago
    I couldn't agree more, Val.

Very clever way to reach millions of people, Oprah.
  • elizobihfrank · 7 months ago
No matter the divided reactions to this social media event, it was definitely exciting and the energy was quite palpable.... It was hard to be indifferent because it brought out our collective passionate responses to things we admire/abhor.
I was a witness to this and to Oprah's first tweets and, you know, we are turning a direction in the way we use this magnificent and potentially explosive tool. WoW!
I wrote my blog about the event and asked questions about the pros/cons of this medium... I cannot claim to have all the answers but I am definitely willing to witness the journey. Thanks again Pete and team; you guys do add substance to the Twitter experience.
  • Ron · 7 months ago
Here we go, 1990's are back. 60% of twitter owned by VCs, pumping money into it, for an exit in the near future to one of the big boys, and then what? Services are great until they need to actually start making money instead of spending it. And that's when they can sell all that personal information that they have to the highest bidders. So use it while you can, but either way, eventually our info will be sold, advertising methods will be constant, or the fees will come, or it will be gone. Income Statement 101..
  • Sylvia · 7 months ago
Congratulation Ashton, It doesn't matter when Twitter got started you got your 1 million followers. I hope it spread like wild fire.
  • John Moore · 7 months ago
I have read countless posts about how foolish it was that Oprah gave Ashton Kutcher the title of King of Twitter based upon this stunt. While I agree with some of what I’ve read I think that many people are missing the important aspects of what is happening. I do feel that Twitter needs mainstream media to be successful and I also believe that Oprah and Kutcher have helped Twitter cross the chasm, see my blog for why::
