Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Apple to Finally Offer Pre-Made iPhone Ringtones

  • Ajay Mehta · 3 months ago
I'd say they're going to be more than $1.00. The ridiculous history of ringtone sales doesn't justify them being $.50, but I wish they would be.

I use the desktop app Ringer to make ringtones- it is fantastic. no need to buy them ever. I think buying a pre-cut ringtone you risk not having the part of the track you want. I know for me, there are multiple parts of most tracks that I'd like to have, that is why applications like ringer are so great.

I ABHOR the default ring tones...they are ridiculous. At the same time, I don't like using music snippets for my ring tones either, so I stick with the default ones. Actually ONE...I don't to hear a dog barking or a car horn. I wish they'd come out with some so-not-ridiculous ones and a "regular" cell phone ring tone (which they actually used in an early iPhone commercial even though it wasn't available, can we say, FALSE ADVERTISING???...the closest I can get to that is the stupid "old phone" ring tone. UGH.

I agree jessica, but I mainly HATE the TXT tones and how few there are and that they are UNCHANGEABLE... very annoying and very high pitched and squealy
  • Ange · 3 months ago
Yes, REALLY hate the text tones and you cannot add more. None are business-friendly, and you can't always keep it just on vibrate. I hope they change this.
  • Jessica · 3 months ago
@Ange - I HIGHLY doubt they'll ever change that. With the 3G or 3Gs coming out, I thought they would, but Apple doesn't seem to change the most basic, necessary stuff if they don't see the need to.

I have a 1st generation iPhone and tried to make custom ringtones every now and then but each time they end up being so quiet that I have to listen hard to hear them in a quiet room. For day to day use, they're worthless. The only ones I can use at all are the default and the old phone sound.

Waiting for a 3GS to become available here and really hoping for a ringer that's about 10x as loud.

Apple sees there is still some profit opportunity in ringtones and realizes that their old model of paying 99 cents twice to make your own wasn't working, given that users have plenty of ways to make their own for free - from third-party apps like Sharetones to Apple's own Garage Band.

Ringtone by "Weird Al" Yankovic, 'nuff said.

I make them myself with iTunes. It doesn't take more than a couple minutes to change the start and stop point of the song, make a copy and change the extension. Then iTunes automatically puts them in the ringtones folder.

How do you do that? I can't figure it out!! Driving me crazy!!

New to the iphone world, I am having trouble purchasing ringtones. I am yet to actually find a song on itunes that can be made into a ringtone. However, if it worked, it would be great. Unfortunately, I am deeply missing the ability to purchase premade ringtones from at&t. Right now I'm STUCK with marimba.

$3 dollars for a snippet? nah.. it's not gonna work. They already tried with their different "ringtone" extension format. Maybe $.50 to $1.00.. you can still make your own with other apps out there, what's the point.

Currently, users can buy tracks from iTunes and pay an additional 99c to get a 30 second clip of the track to use as a ringtone. Apple’s new ringtones service would be a higher price at $1.29, but lower when you add the original cost of the track.
