I purchased an AppleTV and replaced the 40GB HD with a 500GB one and installed both Boxee and XBMC. It has been fantastic. You can easily watch whatever you want on demand with limited or no commercials. It still needs a little tweaking before the mainstream starts canceling their cable and satellite subscriptions but that time is not far away.

Re: Apple Cuts Price on Apple TV, Drops 40GB Model

Build the boxee functionality in (or something like iot) as standard! - It totally makes the product worthwhile... Bit of a drag having to rebuild the OS every time they update it though... worth the effort for boxee, netflix, hulu, last fm (Lou Griffith, all of these are runniong on my Apple TV now) etc...

Re: Apple Cuts Price on Apple TV, Drops 40GB Model

I want to be able to save all my movies and stuff I get on the Apple TV, it forces you to sync it with a computer and it is a complete waste of all the Gigs I have if I can't store my movies on there. Who wants 100 movies on their laptop?

Re: Apple Cuts Price on Apple TV, Drops 40GB Model

I would LOVE it if included a web browser of some sort or have the ability to add applications like umm - netflix or hulu?

Re: Apple Cuts Price on Apple TV, Drops 40GB Model

C-Mac it was good to have a brief sighting on the talk-cast yesterday. You Rock.

Ok enough of that. This price looks promising for a new AppleTV to drop right before Xmas. I just hope for a more open playback codecs. I have mine modified with ATVflash and it is the best HTPC device ever. However we should not have to hack the ATV to get Boxee, XBMC, Sapphire and the like.

#Aloha CW

Re: Apple Cuts Price on Apple TV, Drops 40GB Model

I've had an Apple TV box for almost two years and thought it was pretty good, but limited in what it could do. I liked being able to share the iTunes library on other Macs across my network, which gave me more playback options, but it was a pain having to convert any downloaded video or DVDs beforehand and put them into iTunes. Then I installed Boxee and it made a world of difference. The latest version now includes XBMC which I actually prefer as a media player - it's fast, has a clean UI, and plays pretty much any format. New videos are FTP'd directly onto the ATV box using Cyberduck and XMBC then lets me navigate through all the folders. Boxee and XBMC take the ATV to an entirely new level - really what the ATV should have been in the first place.

Re: Apple Cuts Price on Apple TV, Drops 40GB Model

I was all excited because I thought this might mean a deal on the now discontinued 40GB model. Refurb price on a 40GB model is only $30 cheaper than a brand new 160GB model though. Lame.
