Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Alienate Your Female Customers? Pepsi Has An App For That

  • mike ashworth · 1 month ago
this is marvellous, think of all those geeks who are still virgins who will now be able to get laid
  • Heidi DeVries · 1 month ago
Maybe I'm just not angsty enough to get upset over this application, but I actually think it's kind of neat. Sure, I don't want some guy recording our exploits on social media, but that's why I don't have one-night stands. But if a guy was interested in a type of woman but wanted to know a little about her, stereotypes can actually help a little.

This is clearly intended as a lighthearted application, not a serious study into the uniqueness of every woman. People get offended at things that really just don't matter.
  • phineaspoe · 1 month ago
Wow, somebody on these boards with a bona fide sense of humor. With all the real things in life to get upset or worry over, a silly phone application shouldn't even register.
  • Liz · 1 month ago
As a woman, I'm not personally offended that this app exists... I see it as a poking light-hearted fun at stereotypes of women (*and* men!). If it makes Pepsi profit then I'll call it successful advertising.

However if I caught a guy using this to try to get with me, I would not give him a second chance. It's entertaining to look through it but pretty tacky to use it seriously.

Just want to point out that if Victoria's Secret made a similar app "against" men, it wouldn't be so much of an issue... of course that is because men haven't had to deal with centuries of discrimination... but I really don't see this app as something to get offended about. Us ladies need to be able to laugh at ourselves :)
  • kellySD · 1 month ago
The real asshat in this equation is Apple who have no problem denying apps from small independent developers for far less salacious content, but of course will let Pepsi waltz though the process with this gem.
  • Ryan Lalonde · 1 month ago
I find this application funny. I bet tons of guys will actually use this to try and score.
  • brian fanslau · 1 month ago
If they truly have nothing original to offer and they are staring into their phones to say the "right" thing why would they "Score". I think most women are smart enough to realize when a man is being false and not looking at them as a person with value.

It is my opinion that the app is actually a great thing. This is why.

For all you ladies out there you can memorize or simply familiarize yourself with the App's given phrases and when you hear a male who is hitting on you or interested in you and they begin using these you can immediately throw in the towel and move on.

The idea of one night stands and "scoring" is simply degrading for anyone. It can be funny I see that but to make an App that encourages people to share in the frivolous relationships that already flourish in country that focuses so fiercely on Glamor and Stars already seems to take things a bit to far.

    One man's Opinion :)

  • Bob · 1 month ago
Brian, you're a moron. Most women are NOT smart enough to realize when a man is being false and not looking at them as a person with value. You clearly don't get laid. Women only realize one thing, nay two:

Am I getting attention? Is this guy hot enough to screw tonight?

If thing 2 is a negative, then thing 1 takes on greater importance in direct proportion to how much attention the woman has been receiving lately.
  • Chelsea · 1 month ago
that's ridiculous. you obviously only get laid by stupid, desperate women.
it's SUPER obvious when a guy is pretending to be attentive and sensitive. i can't stand it!
and what kind of one dimensional skanky hos do you know that are only wondering if you're hot enough to screw? you seem to be living a rather pathetic lifestyle.
  • Pedroia · 1 month ago
Bob, This seems to be the app you've been waiting for. Good luck at the next misogynist group meeting.
  • quizquest · 1 month ago
Gee, Bob, guess you just don't date the smarter crowd. Perhaps they're avoiding you? Brian is right on the money! Awesome app for women to winnow out the "Bobs" quickly.
  • B · 1 month ago
You're an idiot. Ahem, most women are smart enough to see that you're a loser and thus you post illogical garbage like this on the internet.

    Next.
  • Ashley · 1 month ago
Even though I agree with Brian as well, you are on the money too, Bob. There are definitely girls dumb enough out there and your two points are true. But even for those girls that are smart enough to see through it, they may be looking for a one night stand as well. So it could definitely be a win win. It's all relative to the person and how bad they want to get poon.

It is not up to women to memorize or get to know this stupid app. It's up to men to know better then to use such crap.

and total shame on you Pepsi, way to conform to hetronormativity, gender roles AND blantently tell women you think they are stupid enough to fall for this app.
  • Name · 1 month ago
Well said! It's interesting that one of Adam's comments was something along the lines of “Pepsi should have known that women would get wind that this was happening and be offended.” He doesn’t focus on the fact that men should be offended too, and that they are also confined by this type of behavior. There is also a video clip on CNN which interviews Adam and at the end he says “create one that stereotypes men too”. Like objectification is ok as long as it’s happening to both genders. The problem is that men don’t live in a society where they have to worry about consequences of this type of behavior – one where they are the overwhelming majority of domestic violence and sexual assault victims.
  • Concerned Citizen · 1 month ago
Go pump your bible somewhere else goody two-shoes. There is nothing wrong with sex, and nothing wrong with wanting sex. It is not immoral. In fact it is the opposite, it is 100% natural.
  • brian fanslau · 1 month ago
I do not believe I said anything about eternity or Bible's. I simply feel and I am sure there are others who feel the same way that people have value and to take advantage of anyone because you can "say the right thing" simply to get in bed with someone will hurt their feeling and we can already see the implications of this frivolity in the empty lives and the worthlessness people who live in such a way by choice or by necessity feel about themselves with low self-esteem. The comment directed towards the app simply is to say we do not need to endorse an App that furthers empty relationships.

The moral of this story is, ladies, don't go home with someone you just met. If you choose to do that, be prepared to face the consequences, i.e. being twittered about you by some douchebag who picked you up using "amp up before you score."
  • Yes, A Guy · 1 month ago
How is it that a beverage company has seemingly destroyed relationships with this gag app is way beyond me. Women are protesting an app that is clearly meant as a gag. The app doesn't claim to try and use mental tactics to con women into scoring. The women depicted are illustrated, the "pick up" lines are corny (and meant to be funny), etc. No self-respecting guy would need to use this app to seriously pick up a woman. However, if he did, then she's as dumb as he is.
  • Yoyo · 1 month ago
I'm surprised at how so many people take this app so seriously. It's a gag app, like iFart. I don't think anyone would use this app in a serious attempt to pick up a woman. And for the women who are looking to be "picked up", would they care? I dunno...
  • Jo Galati · 1 month ago
How is this application any different to the book The Game - or any other pick up manuals that are out there and The Game actually works on manipulating women unlike this application which just seems like a bit of silly nonsense.

If a guy has to use this application to score - then he probably needs all the help he can get :)
  • digitalfemme · 1 month ago
LOL. This app is brilliant and funny! I love the name "Before you Score". I'm disappointed that they only listed 24 types of women. :-) Gee, I wonder which one I would be. I can see one problem though and that's being, that you cannot label women into just one category. We are often a mixture of some, depending on our moods. :-) Just sayin.

I would be extremely offended if Pepsi doesn't create this app for Android.
  • Paul Carter · 1 month ago
Honestly, Lets look at the app from a guy's perspective. First of all any guy caught actually refering to this app before speaking to a girl would be ridiculed back to the stone age. This app will appear on guys phones as a joke. Guys will sit there and berate and tear apart the obviously weak lines found within the application. But here is the kicker girls are going to download it as well. They are going to rip it to shreds just like the guys do.

It is quite popular to think that corporations are full of mindless drones that "Just Don't Get It" but be afraid be very afraid they actually do! All that marketing money they spend and I am willing to bet that the Marketing department is Jumping up and down at Pepsi high fives all around. My money says they were banking on this social outbreak and it is exactly what they were seeking. They can't make you watch their ads but watch them make you talk about their product.

Move along folks there is nothing to see here. Just some marketing folks at Pepsi proving they can still "reach" people.
  • wendywhy · 1 month ago
I think this app will get you about the same amount of action that Axe does!

As a chick I am amused, not alienated by this app. That being said, I'm amused by random picked up lines, too. Bring them on, LOL.

Ahahaha maybe you b‌i‌t‌‌c‌h‌‌e‌‌s just need a good slap in the mouth to put you back where you belong: On your knees scrubbing the floor & sucking a c‌‌o‌‌c‌‌‌k, or making my f‌‌uc‌‌‌k‌‌in‌‌g dinner.

Guys why are we still feeding into this b‌‌ul‌‌l‌‌s‌‌h‌‌it that women are our equals? There isn't a woman alive who can't get her a‌‌s‌‌s beat by a man. All they are is f‌‌‌‌uc‌‌‌‌‌k‌ing baby factories. They are prone to irrational thought due to the fact that they are controlled mostly by emotions & not actual thought. Therein making them much more similar to animals.

Women are social chameleons — or better yet: social vampires. Women walk into a situation and before you know it they’ve completely changed their wardrobe and mannerisms as if they’ve joined a fucking cult. Men are not sheep. Everyone knows the word for a female sheep is ewe, but what about the male word? There isn’t one because sheep is something men are not. Male sheep are called GOATs (aKa Greatest Of All Time).

Hey every click Becky's profile link... http://www.beckygrant.net/ she has pictures of herself in and out of a bra. Some are topless but covered. I don't know but I just found the fact you're upset about women being objectified to be HILARIOUS while you're posting nude and semi-nude pictures of yourself on your personal website. COMEDY!
  • Name · 1 month ago
You know what, her complaint about the sexism in this app that tells guys how to manipulate women into having sex with them has nothing to do with whether or not she had pictures on herself without clothes on. The fact that you think it's appropriate to shame her for posing naked just points out that your sexism is much worse than pepsi's app. Women can do whatever they want with their bodies and still have an opinion. You think because she is sexual means what she said is illegitimate? Seriously, fuck you.

Becky, don't listen to these assholes. It's just an example of how men try to dominate public space.
  • Concerned Citizen · 1 month ago
Too funny. As for the person (I assume is a woman) who replied that your comment is sexist, does she have any idea of the double standard she lives by? Women can do anything they want (even insult men), but men must live their lives according to the rules of women?!? Give your head a shake. Men live their lives by their own rules. Society's rules have little to do with men, and are only in place so women can feel good about themselves.

Misandry is everywhere, but men are now standing up against it, and demanding the male point of view be available for all, even if it pi$$es off a few anti-male females (and some anti-male male weirdos)
  • objective · 1 month ago
I think the problem with the app. is that it has the potential to hurt a lot of people. Posting semi-nude photos isn't harmful to anyone.
  • codearchitect · 1 month ago
Becky is on the money here, do it!
  • michaeldurwin · 1 month ago
Funny, because the app isn't about comparing breast or butt size, or the size of anything else on a woman. Now, if you had said "I'll create an app with the best ways to turn a guy down or to land a doctor, then there would be an equal comparison.

Just for the record, it's longer than an iPhone, bring it on!
  • Katy Griffin · 1 month ago
yeah...where's the app that will show you where all the jerks are??? oh yeah...they're EVERYWHERE
  • Concerned Citizen · 1 month ago
Now aren't you a misandric bitter bee with an itch. I'm sure you would LOVE an app like that, and I'm sure it would be well received by society. What does that say about our society? And the Pepsi app has nothing to do with the female perspective, but it does have something to do with the male perspective, and THAT is why women (and the feminine males) are upset.

Toss away your misandric society and welcome male likes into your little world, since 'male likes' does not mean 'anti-female'.

  • Dave · 1 month ago
Indeed, your intolerance of differing viewpoints speaks for itself. Say no more, bigot.
  • Bigotry S. Wrong · 1 month ago
Tolerance? Tolerance of a chauvinist viewpoint? No. This whole "entitled to my opinion" mentality in this country is ridiculous. No, there is no tolerance for bigotry, discrimination, chauvinism, racism, all of what you "right-wing" types represent. It's not a "differing viewpoint." It's wrong. Would you "tolerate" a person who likes to have sex with children or who likes to murder people? That's wrong, and so is right-wing discrimination and the objectification of women, which we ovary-carrying people have to deal with on a daily basis.
  • Concerned Citizen · 1 month ago
Sorry little misandric "Bigotry S. Wrong", but as your name says, you are Miss Wrong again. It is not chauvinist for men to want to have sex with women. It is 100% natural. Just because you don't like the fact that men don't need to be attached to the same woman for the rest of their life (like women do), don't try and censor men by using the often used tool of the anti-male feminist, which is the politically correct censor. Common sense rules over political correctness, and common sense tells us that men like to have sex with women, and that it is normal, natural, and is only negative in the twisted viewpoint you have created.

  • Dean · 1 month ago
It's a marketing campaign. People that have a problem need to get over it and not lead such serious lives! Would I be pissed off if they released the same app for women? No.

In the UK, we have a chocolate bar called 'Yorkie'. It's tagline is "It's not for girls." Do girls still eat it? Yes. Did more men buy it before they changed to that tag line? Yes, so they changed it to hit their market.

    Calm down people!
  • Martin · 1 month ago
The Yorkie is made by Nestle, a company that can't do much more to alienate conscious consumers http://www.babymilkaction.org/pages/boycott.html (killing 3rd world babies is bad for your brand). Luckily for all corporations, most consumers are pretty much zombies.
  • Monika Runstrom · 1 month ago
Changing a tag line to 'It's not for girls' is different than coming up with an application that encourages you to 'brag' about the women you have slept with/hit on and keep a running list of what 'type' that woman is.
  • Heidi DeVries · 1 month ago
The only kind of woman that has to worry about being considered a stereotype or a conquest is the kind that has one-night stands with the first idiot guy to show a little interest in them.
  • Name · 1 month ago
Hey I like your point of view... wanna go out for coffee some time? ;D
  • Dean · 1 month ago
    It's a perfectly valid example.

No where does it say in the app about keeping a running list of people that you've slept with or even people you've hit on. It links to sites like Wikipedia to show info about different things and lists some (probably ridiculously cheesy) chat-up lines. Shall be ban the internet so that people can't look up chat-up lines?

It's been made for FUN for the target audience of the product that it promotes.
  • themaria · 1 month ago
I agree with Monika here. These are two completely different examples here. The Pepsi one actually normalizes and encourages stereotyping women, treating them as conquests and then bragging about it. Helping men "score" is a multi-billion dollar industry (shaving products, deodorants, fragrances, etc), but this crosses the line from the land of innocent innuendos and fantasies into something that is downright offensive.

What Pepsi is demonstrating here is lack of awareness of how quickly and how damaging bad W-O-M can really be. Whether or not this is something to be legitimately upset about is a secondary issue. The larger issue here is that judging by the online chatter, people (esp. women) are already pissed. Whether they should be (oh come on, it's an innocent app, right?) is irrelevant; what's relevant is the actual reaction. If Pepsi knew what was good for them, they would be 1. pulling the app and 2. creating a blogpost / video post / social media statement. If they ignore it, they will be following in the footsteps of Motrin (Motrin Moms fiasco) and Domino's pizza (the employee video fiasco). The Pepsi community manager has his / her job cut out for them. If they don't have one, they can give me a ring :)
  • Monika Runstrom · 1 month ago
Did you not click on the 'brag' button on the women? It asks you their name, the date and your comments on them. Then it wants you to share that information with all of your friends.

The cheesy pick up lines are funny and interesting, but keeping a list of how many of the 'athlete' you have slept with/hit on is taking it a bit too far.
  • Paul Puri · 1 month ago
Do I think it is in bad taste? Sure. To me it is. Do I think it is good marketing? If they know their target, then yes. Just like a politician, they are catering to a base. Should they pull it? Don't know. I am not the target. Would guys get up in arms if there was one for women? Probably not. Does that mean it is not offensive? IMO, no.
  • YeYoIzMrYeah · 1 month ago
OK, I take this as a joke, because of this small detail that both sexes do. Pay attention people, Its a funny app. Most guys who are sucessful, wont rely on this app. Maybe Pepsi intended this for a few giggles.

Plus, all women, talk about guys, amongst their best friend, OMG he is so funny, Ugh he is horrible and more worser things that would most likely anger us if we found out, however, do we give the slightest care? No, we don't. ON the other hand, simple jokes like this, are suppose to be "Guy" related and certainly not intended for girls to hear/find out. When they do, all they want is to take it to the court and settle it. This is why, we dont tell any guy jokes when your around, because 1. you kill the moment, 2. throw a pissy fit and stomp around, or 3. get offended so easily FROM A JOKE, that we've didn't mean the way like your taking it.

Simple things that us guys say to other friends such as "Your fat, your ugly, your as big as the earth, your hair looks like shit, your feet, etc etc etc"... you women take it too personally and get offended by it.

This is the truth, it happens on a daily occasion. I've watched how people act around others when im out in public and I laugh at it everytime because it doesnt differ between the so called "types of women."

Personally, I'm a nice guy, but I see how this goes on daily.
  • Concerned Citizen · 1 month ago
Helping men score is a multi-million dollar business...I agree. But helping women trap a man forever is a multi-BILLION dollar business (make-up, fake fingernails, fake eyelashes, fake hair color, fake boobs, clothes that hide any bulges, any imperfections are hidden from the man, so he really has no idea what he is getting).

Women cry had when they PERCEIVE something is bad. If it is bad or not is irrelevant. This is how women manipulate to get their own way. It is not based on logic or rational thought, but on Chivalry, and has gone on since the dawn of time. But men and companies are opening their eyes and becoming aware of this manipulation, and realize that this manipulation is nothing but a form of abuse. Too bad if you don't like it. Men do, and men are the target market. I don't like Oprah, but I why remove a misandric b-itch when there would only be another to replace her since women like her.

If a guy wants to brag about the women he's slept with, there's plenty of other ways to do it I guess. This app is not a pioneering product for that.

I just think everyone's taking it way too seriously.

Posts like these initiate very entertaining sex wars.

What is wrong with men bragging about the women they have slept with? Is that a bad thing? If you think it is, why? It is just sex, it is not like he killed someone. Nobody complains when he goes out for a burger, so why do you find it so bad that he had sex? Everyone here who think they are liberated, really need to see the shackles they throw onto other people (specifically men), because you don't agree with a male view. Yes, men like sex, and men like sex with lots of different women, is that really so hard to believe? Is it anti-woman? Nope, it is 100% natural for men to want sex with many women. So stop the man hate and accept the fact that men like sex.

What is up with pepsi? The ads with the guys getting bowling balls dropped on their heads and smashing it on the roof etc, doesn't make me want to drink pepsi at all, nor does it make my husband want any pepsi either. Now this? Oh and let me tell you, they may think this app is funny but if the girl finds out, and tells two friends and so on, you know how LAME a guy is going to look that he has this on his phone?

I don't know why all the men seem offended or are worried that ladies will be offended. This app is perfect for AMP's target audience- young men! I haven't tried the app but I think it's a creative and well-executed idea. Sure, they're totally stereotyping women and it's a bit demeaning, but it's just a game. A similar app for women would be great but I don't think we're the audience that Pepsi is going for with AMP.
  • Monika Runstrom · 1 month ago
I would be curious to see if guys actually use the 'brag' function and share their list with all of their Twitter or Facebook friends.
  • G · 1 month ago
"Sure, they're totally stereotyping women and it's a bit demeaning, but it's just a game."

This type of mentality is responsible for the sexual harassment and assault that many women around the world receive constantly. "Oh, don't be upset because I slapped your ass. I was just kidding! Don't take things so seriously! Don't you have a sense of humor?"

When we brand unwanted sexual attention as "just a game", we tell women that their concerns about harassment and assault are ridiculous and should be brushed off. Many rapes go unreported because such mentality makes women feel that they somehow "asked" for what happened to them: "Well, he said he was just kidding and he didn't mean to slap my ass in an offensive manner. I had better not say anything and just laugh along with it."

This perpetuates the cycle of women being sexual objects for men. And if some of these comments are any indication, it shows that people still have this archaic view in 2009.

It's no surprise that the majority of the comments who support this app are from men. Men are (typically; some, not all) not sensitive to these kinds of issues because they don't have to go through the kind of things women do.
  • name · 1 month ago
I don't know how you make the leap from a stupid iPhone where guys can brag about their sexual conquests with consensual females to that of "unwanted sexual attention." If women don't want to be sexual objects, then they shouldn't do things like wear make up, sexy clothes, and other things that trigger the sexual response center in men. However, women don't want. They want to dress and act like sluts but have men ignore their provocative behavior. How is this rational again?
  • Astfgl · 1 month ago
Excuse me. I (and many other women) do not wear make-up, sexy clothes and such to attract the attention of men. I wear whatever fits my mood. I wear whatever *I* feel like wearing, regardless of whether it happens to make me attractive to other people. And yes, I fully expect a man to be able to behave as a human being and not an animal even if I happen to feel like wearing a short skirt or some mascara. You are basically saying that men are *not* rational beings, but rather slaves to their emotions. On that ground, your questioning of G's argument being rational becomes ridiculous.

(I will ignore your comment about women acting as sluts in the hope that you realise how insulting this generalisation is, or until you provide me with a definition of what you mean by 'acting like a slut')

Ewwww. Pepsi is my preferred soda but this is gross. And so lame. If I caught I guy using that on me, I'd throw his phone in the toilet and he most definitely would not get laid (mind you I'm married so that might add to the reaction) :p

as a woman, I am much more amused than I am offended by this app. there are many things in society that anger me by their objectification of women, but this is not one of them. instead, I got a good laugh out of it.
  • Yoyo · 1 month ago
Not a big deal. It's not a serious app, it's meant to be funny. If there were an app that broke men down into categories (for whatever reason), it would be equally funny. :)
  • michaeldurwin · 1 month ago
My GOD, I hate political correctness. It's only a matter of people not saying or doing something because it MAY offend someone. Get over it, focus on more important things. Any couple who hook up because of this app deserve each other!
  • michaeldurwin · 1 month ago
People need to lighten up, like the Axe commercials, this isn't an insult to women, it's poking fun at the guys who'll use it.
  • christinecox · 1 month ago
Funny, harmless, not that sexist, just silly - I think it has a sophmoric tone, which helps take some of the sting out of anything that might seem offensive. Generally, though, i found it harmless.
  • jasonn · 1 month ago
For one, the whole idea of "before you score" is offensive as it objectifies women. But, women aren't offended by the term pimp in pop culture or other degrading terminology, let alone the culture of the hookup which is itself sexual objectification. Chances are women who are legitimately offended by the ap or the campaign aren't a target audience anyway.
  • Andrew · 1 month ago
AMP marketing efforts are lame as it is... at least they are consistent.
  • Name · 1 month ago
The whole problem with this app is that it actively encourages LYING to another person in order to get sex. The girl in question, if she's gullible, will think that the guy actually shares her interests and is looking for a connection other than just fucking. If guys want to actually get to know a girl, they need more than just an iphone app for help. And if they just want to have sex, they should have the balls to say it out front instead of pussyfooting around it by pretending they know things that they really don't. Sure, they'll get rejected sometimes, but seriously. Grow the fuck up.
  • Yes, A Guy · 1 month ago
This app is not going to make or break the man/woman/courtship scenario. Nor will it actively encourage LYING. If I remember the video, meet a treehugger / find a vegan restaurant; meet a woman on spring break / find out which sorority her greek letters stand for; etc. Actively lying? Really?
  • Name · 1 month ago
It's lying because the guy wouldn't otherwise know that information. How hard is it to go "Hey, I like your sorority shirt, which one are you in?" instead of pretending you knew that information all along? Or to go "I'd really like to have lunch with you, do you know any good restaurants around here?" instead of a) assuming you know what the girl likes based upon a stereotypical image you have of her that's likely wrong in the first place and/or b) claiming you know a restaurant that you've likely never been to before.
  • Gus · 1 month ago
People lie. That's how the world works. Men will lie to women to get sex just as much as women lie to men to get their wallets. The problem is the culture we've built in this country on how to deal with sex. Quite frankly, most of the women who are getting their granies in a knot over this app probably had one-night stands themselves but can't admit it.
  • Name · 1 month ago
I agree that the culture our country has built surrounding sex is inherently problematic, but this app only encourages it. That's my problem with it. I'm not saying women are flawless in this regard, but for cripe's sake if you just want sex then just ask for sex. I've had friends who have been very politely asked if they would like to have sex before and even though they politely declined, the guy who asked was courteous about it. At least someone like that is honest about what they're looking for and willing to accept rejection. If you want to get to know someone, then talk to them. Don't use an iphone app as a proxy between yourself and the object of your affection, just be yourself and be honest. Girls will like you more for that.
  • lkochevar · 1 month ago
Oh come on. It's all in good fun. No one is trying to alienate us or whatever. Like this is such a big deal? It's not. Get over it.
  • iriemama · 1 month ago
I think it's funny. And I think women need to quit being so damn uptight. Sorry, but if you're that stupid to fall for some of those lines, then you have more problems than some silly iPhone app.

Chalk this up to yet another thing that women try to use in the whole "degrading to women" argument. It's only degrading if you allow it to be.

I happen to think of myself as a well educated, fairly street smart chick. And I've still got a good sense of humor. Things like this don't offend me. But then again, I'd never fall for a cheesy pick up line or some idiot trying to make a fool of himself with his iPhone app. If anything, the guys should be offended by the insinuation that they aren't good enough to attract a woman on their own merits. Just making a point there... but seriously, stop taking life so seriously people. It's all in good fun. Get over yourselves.

One thing corporations don't seem to get in the social web is that we the consumer know and care how these big corporations are tied together. Yes, what Pepsi does with AMP does affect how people perceive the whole brand.

Since you brought up Axe... ever notice who their parent company is? Unilever. Guess what other product Unilever owns? Dove.

Isn't it ridiculously effing hypocritical for the same company that promotes a Campaign for Real Beauty to be simultaneously using hot schoolgirls pole dancing to promote another product???

Personally, I think the app is kind of funny too -- I don't really have a problem with it. But these corporations with multiple products really shouldn't be sending mixed messages with their different products. I'm not surprised at all that there's backlash against this.

As a woman, I noticed they used ladies rather than chicks.
I don't know, technically, isn't this beneficial to both genders? I can see a guy getting it to help a current relationship. A female version would end this whole 'SEXIST' issue. I think it's rather harmless.

I'm going to download this AP just to see what tips they're giving men. I think women should write an AP like this... Ladies, I got a really good pick up line from a construction worker the other day. As I walked by, he was lifting something heavy and proceeded to grunt "I am so stong and good looking, too." I was tempted to stop, but alas, kept walking, LOL. How about a simple hi? That always works... We'll see what this AP is all about... Curious...
  • LAustin · 1 month ago
all marketing campaigns have a purpose of selling more product. This will probably get people to download the app, but it won't sell more AMP. And, AMP will now be associated with guys who can't get a girl, which will further alienate guys from buying the drink... which was the whole purpose of the app.... I give the campaign an A for creating buzz, but total failure at driving more sales.
  • Yes, A Guy · 1 month ago
I think everyone is taking this app WAY more seriously than necessary, especially on a Monday. Honestly, so what this app exists?

Any guy who seriously thinks they can "score" with women by using this app is a loser to the X degree. Any women who can be so swept off her feet by how "in tune" the guy is by him using this app and actually sleep with them -- needs to reevaluate what quantifies the men they sleep with.

As some people have noted, this product is marketed towards guys -- whether for fun or not.

What a great idea, but it's so 1.0!
It should really permit to people to vote on lines, insert new lines that work for the various chicks. In fact it should permit to insert new types.

Just downloaded the AP. I would be categorized as "business woman." Let's see what you got Pepsi... ok, so the lines that are supposed to work on me are: "do you like to roleplay, because I can pretend that I still have a job." or the classic "You can ring my trading bell" ooh ooh, what else?! • Katie · 1 month ago
I honestly don't think it's that bad. The name, yeah, that's a little over board, and the lines will most likely fail miserably, but it seems to be an attempt at helping (clueless) guys understand girls so they have something to talk about. If you're a woman and find it appalling, then walk away or refuse the drink he bought you. There are a million books out there on how to date - I'm not sure how this is any worse.

There's obviously a market for guy-based products. With the success of products like AMP, AXE, and Tag coupled with the success of male-oriented "frattire" writers like Tucker Max and Maddox, it's only natural that more and more companies will try to capture a share of it. While AXE and Tag are in direct competition for body sprays, Pepsi (amp) will be the lone wolf so far, and an app like this is a genius step.
Whether or not you like the idea is irrelevant in my opinion. Some will like it, some will hate it, but honestly if you don't like it, then just don't use it. It's as simple as that.
The majority of women out there will be able to see through such an app, or the 'help' it offers, but to the ones that don't, who cares? It's no different than the locker room talk that happens about sexual exploits anyway.. why does it matter if it's now on the iPhone?

The chat up line bit could be seen as funny, because I'm guessing no one takes it seriously and I'm sure I've seen stuff like that before without it bothering me, but the social networking stuff is dangerous. As adults we can take responsibility for who we sleep with, but it's vulnerable younger people, teenagers, who I'd be worried about. There is already huge social pressure on boys and girls to be sexually active from a young age. Girls at school can be totally ostracized by their peers if they don't live up to the ever rising expectations on them. I don't know if anyone saw the report a few weeks ago which claimed that one in three teenage girls had been sexually abused? Stuff like this isn't totally responsible for that, but it does contribute to it. I think that's something we should take seriously. Also I wonder about the pressure put on the guys. No one's mentioned that so far. I don't think you're all pigs and I definitely wouldn't condone a female counter version.

Pepsi, Pepsi, Pepsi, why, why, why? This is pathetic mojo material. Pepsi is telling us they knowingly approved a marketing campaign designed to demoralize young women in hopes to increase sales and help guys get laid with sexual libidos most likely delayed by pesticide run off and rays emitted from their computer. The marketing team must have Googled the term “how to get laid”. It’s popular with over 18 million results.

Please, get a creative team with a clue. Was this a collaborative effort of a male and female team combined with 16 year old want-to-be players plucked from a focus group? I can see them now….Gee, here’s a creative path to take, most guys don’t check the web for sex aids, let’s make an app to get laid! Maybe the next Pepsi app will be “Knocked-Up by AMP APP”. This app insults both sides. This is a creepy tool. What happened to the wholesome guys? Tell me if you’ve seen any lately. You know, the ones with character? Every budding sociopath in the world must be proud of Pepsi for furthering their cause.

Look, women say the are tough as men but yet every little thing offends them. I hear women all the time everywhere I go saying things that would offend men if we played by the same "victim" rules you ladies play by. Instead of labeling everything a man does as sexist, lighten up because if you dont you truely are the weaker sex.
  • socialcity · 1 month ago
The weaker sex developed the app, men. haha Hey, I'm smiling. It gets funnier to me each time I read the comments. If you mentored young girls you would understand my first words to print. If a guy is lame enough to use it, that's sad and funny. I can see a teen movie based off this app in the making. If a gal is brain dead or unworldly enough to fall for it shame on her. Maybe the next app should be "Who's Your Daddy". Everywhere you go, wow, you hang out in the wrong places. You aren't hanging out with the edgy kind of gals with a brain. Maybe you are too sensitive to what is truth versus fiction or maybe your don't know how to talk to women if "everything little thing offends them". It's possible the gals you hangout with are really pulling that manly chain of yours to get a reaction.

Have you people not opened your eyes to what is coming through the media for the past 20 years?!? Men have been the brunt of jokes, shown as weak, and down right stupid, while women have come off squeaky clean. Where have you been for the past 20 years? Why haven't you complained about every ad that degrades men? Is it OK to degrade men as long as you don't offend a woman in any way, even if your ad is fun and entertaining to the male target market?

Anyone who complains about this marketing campaign, but hasn't batted an eyelash at the 99.9% of the other crap that is truly offensive to men, is a complete hypocrite.

This marketing campaign is no where near as bad as so many others that are offensive towards men but have been brushed under the carpet for the past 20 years. Can you say "mob mentality"?

If you are fighting to eliminate offensive material, then fight all forms of offensive material, not only material that women perceive as offensive.

I had a friend with an iphone download this app today. The lines are hilarious. Clearly meant as a joke. We tried some of the lines on the girls at work and all they did was laugh, and want to see the app.

Im willing to bet 100% of the haters on here have never played with the app. They heard about it and judged it.

Here is an example: You click the woman labeled 'Nerd' who is depicted with Spock ears and a Star Trek shirt. One of the lines is "You must have been shot with a phaser set on stunning".

Seriously? You women are losing sleep over that? I feel sorry for you.

I agree that most of these people probably haven't actually seen the app. It's clearly a gag.

This application is cr*p. Pepsi deserve to be boycotted for using such a sad, anti-gay, anti-women, anti-any-man-with-a-brain application. Do they think its edgy? It's pathetic and any lad using it wouldn't "score" anyway.
  • Yoyo · 1 month ago
Umm... yeah. You know it's a gag app, right?

(The iFart app won't help you become more regular either)

I'm a female and find this application very funny. I wrote in my blog about it - check it out http://jtdelivers.blogspot.com/2009/10/define-i....

But hey, the bad press is good for Pepsi anyway, right? I'm sure the app is being downloaded like crazy.

To any man that knows how to get a woman on his own this app should be the last thing he's worried about...but what is the harm in helping those men who don't have to confidence to approach a woman with the right things to say?...sure it's a little ridiculous to go brag about it to yours friends through the application...but all guys know...your gonna brag somehow...it's part of who we are...we feel proud of ourselves for scoring and want others to be proud of us to...and to the women up in arms about this..i think your all scared thinking...what if i get picked up by someone using this app.?...will i be as shallow as to be classified like that?...the truth is maybe....at least theres 20 classes... Men are seen as one to two types...horny jerk, or horny nice guy...lighten up a little...have fun with your life...you only get one

Hey, I'm a woman and I think this is HILARIOUS. It's clearly fulfilling it's real purpose--getting people to talk about the product, if only incidentally. If I had an iPhone, I'd probably get it for pure entertainment purposes (it's free, and somebody worked their ass off on the thing). There are plenty of worse things, real problems in the world to get offended about. Like the prevailing idea that there are only TWO kinds of women "do-able" and "undo-able". At least this app has 24. That's progress, of a sort.

I think its hilarious. Doesn't anyone have a sense of the ridiculous anymore? This is Monty-Pythonesque humor...so ridiculous its funny! What about a sense of irony? Doesn't it seem ironic to you that a man who would be so desperate as to use this would score in any way at all?
Sorry, all...i just found it hilarious on sooooo many levels!

I've just purchased my last Pepsi product. This is tasteless and a god-awful marketing ploy. "Objectifying women? There's an app for that!"

You know, I got to give it to them. They did a great job creating this app. It is a great app. I know some women who have got a kick out of it. If Amp was smart they would be working on a male version of this that they can come out with. This way they can't get any complaints and everyone is happy. AMP, feel free to hire me on...
