Mashable - The Social Media Guide: A Pre That Looks Like an iPhone? There’s An Ad For That [Video]

I'm sorry, I don't see it. I mean, they're similar because they are both showing off the features of their phone but they're not even showing off the same features. The two ads are completely unrelated.

Someone in Palm/Bell marketing just got called out big time.
By the way - loved the "there's an ad for that" reference!

He said "there's an app for that", didn't he?

I wonder if they sped up the phone sequences like Apple did for their commercials.

Surely it's more a tongue-in-cheek reference to the iPhone ads? Maybe another way of challenging the "there's an app for that, only on the iPhone" tagline - which still really annoys me anyway as, here in the UK, EVERYTHING they advertised as an "app for that, only on the iPhone" could be found in the Android Market too. (But that's a different discussion! ;-P)

I got the impression that there was a knowing smile running through the Bell ad, not everything is malicious!

I don't see any resemblance here. They don't say "there's an app for that" and I don't see why showing what a phone does is copying. I think in order to show what a phone does you kind of have to hold it up and show the hand since the whole way the phone touch works on the pre is through a static pad like the one on a labtop. In addition, they didn't compare "apps;" iphone is showing a touring guide, pre is showing gps maps (not tours) and switching applications. I am a Pre owner and it works a lot different than an iphone. Iphones use single applications at a time, the Pre works in conjunction with a bunch of PROGRAMS all at once, it is like 2D versus 3D.

The only feature that this phone really has is background applications. Not really enough to justify it as an iphone killer. I'll stick with my iphone thank you very much!

For us, the figures are clear.
Apple Sold 9 mio iPhones in 2008, q1+q2 9 mio. IPhones.

People don't love Palm anymore -my guess

The only thing I see that's a ripoff is the hand close up scrolling across the screen. It doesn't say "there's an app for that" it says "move easily through multiple apps". It's showing that it is a little different.

Too bad they aren't emphasizing multi-tasking and opening multiple apps - palm pre's strong suit. Or made a big deal about the how the pre can slide.

I wonder if they wanted it to look so much like iPhone because they wanted people to see it as being "just like the iPhone" only with a different carrier. They could have made it more campy and played up their features in comparison while making the commercial look so much like it.

If their phone is as half-baked as their commercial idea, then I won't be getting one anytime soon.

No matter what the Palm Pre does, it can never equal the goodness of the iPhone. Unless they come out with another "totally out of the box" communication device, then they'll just remain as shadow behind the real star which is the iPhone.

Similar or not, kudos to Palm for making an iPhone competitive product in a v1. Looking forward to furture revisions. Should help raise the bar for everyone.
