Mashable - The Social Media Guide: 5 Impressive Real-Life Google Wave Use Cases

  • sytaylor · 3 weeks ago
Still not seen something I'd actually use though...
  • Jeff Korhan · 3 weeks ago
I especially like the use for consuming conference data. This makes for a truly collaborative effort in which the audience, the presenter, and the meeting planner all receive real-time information that is invaluable for their respective roles. As a presenter, this is very cool indeed to know how the message is being received and what is resonating with the audience.

I just got my invite today so I'm looking forward to learning with the help of this article. Thank you.
  • Jay Glogovsky · 3 weeks ago
I completely agree and just received my invitation as well. Unfortunately, I am finding that many people still do not have it and they need to increase the amount of people to receive the invite or offer a couple more invitations for you to give out.

    Hello,

There are some interesting use cases at http://www.wextensions.com/category/google-wave...
  • lelapin · 3 weeks ago
Of all 5 examples I reckon the 4th one, 'annotating a live event', is the most likely to become popular as arguably more efficient than following hashtag tweets on Twitter.

Googlewave is cool - but for process diagrams try BrainFlick's process modeling and diagramming capability....you dont have to be Exxon and its waycoollabrativity (is that a word)?

My business partner and I just got our Wave accounts yesterday and it has already become our main means of collaborating. Absolutely love it. It takes a little while to wrap your head around the mix of email and IM style communication and learning etiquette that is unique to Wave(when to interrupt someone, starting new waves vs reusing existing Waves).

There is no way I would willing go back to pre-Wave type communication and collaboration now that I've used it first hand.

We are already learning what we need to do to get our own internal Wave server setup and how to start getting people working on Wave extensions for meetings, document collaboration, version control, and archiving and record keeping.

I don't see how the salesforce example will take off. If I am having issues, the last thing I want is to try and communicate with a bot. This example goes against the principle of customer service. It's bad enough that people are transferred over seas, now we're going to be Waving with a bot?

    No thanks.

Other examples are pretty solid. Nothing revolutionary, but solid uses of Wave.

We started a "not so impressive but maybe cooler" wave intended to build an auxiliary artificial language: https://wave.google.com/wave/#restored:wave:goo...

And it is working very well. By the way, the showed use cases are extremely good!

What excites me about google wave is the fact that it is an integrated and open ended tool for collaboration. Another tool we use to organize our behavior in groups is currency. I think google wave will prove a powerful context in which to devise innovative ways of "keeping score" that help groups better organize their activities.

Collaborative editing rocks, broadening the concept of eXtreme Programming. It used to be only odd things like SubethaEdit which supported it, but with Google Docs and Wave now, maybe we can use it more? Also real-time collaborative is not the same thing as just editing a wiki together - stopping to save is for sissies!

Got my invite, logged in and totally confused... *rolling eyes* The examples above except for the gaming don't exactly seem to be geared to ordinary people. I'm not sure how most of us will ever need collaboration with friends and family like this. I'm not putting down Google Wave but I'm not exactly finding it practical for everyday computer users, maybe one on one but certainly not groups. Will people really take the time to use it unless it's for business or school? The latter would be awesome like in the video examples given. How many of us need this level of collaboration that simple IM's apps can handle?

Full disclosure, I've only been trying to use Google Wave for a very limited time but again I'm confused as to how to make it useful to me.
  • winedude · 3 weeks ago
I could see waves being useful for discussing potlucks, Thanksgiving dinners, surprise parties, chores lists, shopping lists, Trip planning....
  • Strange_Thought · 3 weeks ago
Yes it's nothing more than what I can do with IM's (as I stated above)..... Besides how many potlucks, thanksgiving dinners, surprise parties, etc could we possibly have? People that use things infrequently tend to forget that it exists, I think Google would want something we can use all the time like gmail. I'm looking at the practicality of using such a technology. It's much better for business and school I think (right now). In it's current state OMG it's a mess when you have too many people in a wave, too much to read and it's visually a bit hard to follow. Not to mention the potential for spam in public waves.

Don't get me wrong I'm not knocking it, it's just so odd and doesn't yet have a flow to it (so to speak) that makes its value obvious. When you have to convince people to use something and the value isn't self-evident then it fails, it's the rule of the road..

I think the Open Source community is going to LOVE GoogleWave, they will see most of the value as will Universities and the like.

IMHO one of the big pros is that google wave is more than "just" the interface currently available at wave.google.com. It´s rather a new way to communicate, and this is of course not limited to humans.
Imagine the following: What if the cash register after your next (or the one after :-) ) shopping will send you a wave, your cell will ask you for payment confirmation and that´s it? Or the fridge is sending some alert...of course all of those ideas are by far not new but the improved protocol being used has some great advantages.

    best regards!

Does that mean that Google bought Mingle? If this is true I wonder what will happen to the competition currently being advertised on Google.
  • Rick Murray · 3 weeks ago
Agree. We did just that during the FDA Social Media Hearings last week. 80 speakers over two days. Created wavelets for each speaker; pre-populated news coverage, posts and presos from as many speakers as we could; and then tracked the session in as it streamed live. Work in process for sure, but it's a whole lot better than live blogging / Tweeting.

The Salesforce Wave for Customer Service looks useful. I guess I will add similar application to my site (תאורה). Right now we use twitter to enable customers real-time interaction with us, but wave will enable much 'richer' user interface.

The problem with the folks like Google & Yahoo is that they have created many tools which have been loosely coupled. The challenge with such a solution is that the the information gets locked into multiple silos. With Google Wave they are trying to integrate all the conversations (discussions) but what would be truly desirable is a platform built form ground up using social networking at the base and business apps on top of it. I have tried Injoos Teamware (www.injoos.com) and found it captures both informal and formal knowledge like documents in one single workspace on the cloud.

Using a public wave at conferences sounds like a great idea. Twitter has been great for conferences, but openly collaborating and annotating a wave would be much better than following hashtags.

Nice cases! I really like the customer service one. If only more companies could have something like that, it'll speed up the process! Except when you're having problems with your internet provider, than you'll just have to use your phone :)
