Clay: Great post. I would add that there is another dimension to social shopping which is the ability of the consumer to pull their social graph into the online experience--turn the online experience from a collection of web pages into a more personal, contextualized experience where the shopper is center, not the site. Quorus here locally in Seattle is addressing exactly that problem with some really interesting solutions.

Very interesting, I imagine this only really works for fashion, electronics and the like. I imagine selling sex toys in a social context would prove more difficult, not too mention controversial.

Would love to introduce everyone here to our company: eDivvy.com.

We've been around since 2007 and noticed a huge up swing in the last 6 months as awareness grows about group gifting or "social shopping". There are about 4 sites right now doing this, but most either require you to use Facebook, or usually you can ONLY raise money that gets deposited into a PayPal account.

We have a basic 4 step process, people use our site to either A) Shop for products via our retail merchants (Amazon, Macy's, Apple, REI, etc) which then get shipped directly to the recipient --- OR ---- B) Raise $$ directly for a general fundraise, charity, etc. We accept all credit cards as well so your friends/family can contribute in whichever way suits them. People use us for everything from birthdays & baby showers to weddings & office gifts.... we've had some great stories where a family lost their home in a fire and friends/family got together on our site and raised over $3,000 for them.
We also have a B2B App so retailers and other ecommerce sites can have their own Group Gifting payment solution (solutions.edivvy.com). Its a quick app install and custom branded for each merchant.
Thanks for checking us out if you have the time. We love to get feedback!

Online shopping is not just here to stay but certainly will continue to grow this holiday
season despite the economy recession. In addition there are portals now like
http://my.blastoffnetwork.com/viralvideo/655891 which will give you cash back!

Really surprised that Mashable missed the cool social shopping app that www.Wishpot.com powers. I saw it on the Avelle Fan Page - www.facebook.com/avelle?v=app_2456371452 the other day -- and yes I was social shopping for a new purse to borrow ;)

Also check out TurnTo (my company). Our social shopping widget runs on online stores and lets shoppers see which friends have previously bought there -- without ever leaving the store. (All permission-based, of course.) So they know who they can turn to for advice they can trust. We think a big win for shoppers and stores is going to be "putting the social in shopping", rather than the other way around. See it in action at www.wirelessemporium.com ("friends" tab on the right edge) or www.turnto.com/partnerlist for others.

Best Buy (http://facebook.com/bestbuy) and iTunes (http://facebook.com/itunes) both have social shopping experiences on their Facebook pages which allow users to easily share items from their online stores with their Facebook friends.

Thanks to all who have offered their comments and additional sites to check out, as a follow on to my original post. Some of our team at Spring Creek were kind enough to assemble a "Still More Social Shopping..." blog post as a follow on -- hope you all find this useful as well! Cheers. http://www.springcreekgroup.com/social-shopping...
