Also, http://www.turbosquid.com/ is a marketplace for pre-rendered 3D Models and plugins and its sister site Revit (http://www.turbosquid.com/Revit-Market) is for architectural models for AutoCAD and Sketchup

I wonder what the sales numbers are really like for the majority of artists on these sites?
(I am sure there are a couple on each site that sell a few things, but most artists - what are their sales?)
Plus as a buyer who has the time to look through all this art?
And who mostly visits these sites? Just other artists and designers looking for an outlet for their art? (As you can see by the comments here - it is just artists, not buyers.)

I absolutely love this list. Thanks for putting it together...now I have a lot of poking around to do!
  • KTG · 9 months ago
No kidding, that's a terrific list. I've used fluttershock and flashden before and both were pretty reasonable and well structured. I chose those because there is no confusion regarding payment and it's linear, if you sell 1,000 you get ten times what you receive if you sell 100 etc. I try to check them at this* data security/privacy security site.
  • Connie · 9 months ago
Great resource! I've never heard about the vast majority of these. Thanks for making the information available!

We're in a closed beta right now but artists and galleries can sign up and get activated. Check it out.

Since November, 2008 there is a large crowd sourcing community for designs: http://www.designenlassen.de You can start a competition and hundreds of designers will work for you. At the end you choose your favorite design and the best designer wins the cash price. During the last months there were hundreds of competitions at designenlassen.de.

http://www.crestock.com/ (kinda like vectorstock or cutcaster)
www.getafreelancer.com/ (Freelancers bid on outsourced projects)

Photographers should look no further than www.alamy.com - 60% of the sale goes to the photographer and they don't sell images for a dollar/ pound
  • Printfection · 9 months ago
You forgot the Print-on-Demand T-shirt and Merchandise site Printfection, which is funny because you've covered the site before. www.printfection.com
  • khorah · 9 months ago
I'm surprised that Cafepress(WWW.Cafepress.com) didn't make it to the print-on-demand list, along with Zazzle, etc.
I've been on Cafepress for several years, and would recommend it highly.
It's somewhat easier to use and set-up that either Zazzle, Printfection or Spreadshirt, in my opinion.

I didn't see anyone mention them so I'll mention etsy.com which is like redbubble and Artomat.org which is the submission site for the art-o-mat vending machines around the world that dispense art work for cheap.
  • nobodypanic · 8 months ago
Just wanted to give a beware about zooppa. They have been posting deceptive listings on craigslist recently. Posting as a creative firm offering jobs, then responding with a link for people to sign up for zooppa. If they resort to that kind of deception, are they really a company you would want to trust. I will admit, I am not a fan of spec work, but any company that resorts to this kind of practice is someone to be wary of. I caught 2 listings by them in chicago, and know of another that has caught them doing it in the Austin listings as well.
  • Typographywizard · 7 months ago
Zooppa found me on craigslist and I appreciated the time they took to review my portfolio and recruit me to their site, which I love. A lot of people think they want work on spec but all these sites want work on "spec", but really it's a competition so everyone carries the same risk. It's not about the cash it's about the community and feedback and building your portfolio and so forth. I love Zooppa so don't hate.
  • ngw · 7 months ago
Hi nobodypanic, first of all I would like to introduce myself, I'm Nicholas Wieland, CTO of Zooppa.
I would like to say that I'm sorry for what happened, we definitely hired the wrong person to grow our community, he has been fired one month ago because of this mess on craigslist.
As a developer I feel ashamed and I can guarantee that it won't happen anymore.
If you want you can contact me personally at my email address nwieland at zooppa dot com to discuss further the problem, this is not how zooppa works and definitely not how we want people to think about us.
If you guys find other listings on around you can write me, I will take care to remove everything immediately.
    I'm really really sorry.

Hey there, nice article! I thought I'd mention that Artfire.com is a another great place to sell your designs online, and you can even do so for free! Here's some basic information on the site:

ArtFire is the fastest growing marketplace in the handmade industry where artists from all over the world can list and sell their handcrafted items. On ArtFire, members can set up a virtual and fully customizable storefront where they can list items for sale with absolutely no fees. But ArtFire is so much more than a marketplace, it is a community. Members can interact in the site forums, join together in craft guilds, and even become involved in the construction of the site. With promotion tools such as Rapid Cart, which allows members to post a miniature storefront to their blog, and Market Hub, which allows members to link out to their other online venues, ArtFire is revolutionizing the craft marketplace. Although ArtFire is still in beta, it has grown tremendously in the last nine months, with more than 30,000 members and more than 300,000 items currently listed for sale.

It would be great if you could add ArtFire to your list, if you need more information on the site, please email me.

Wow! I'm truly surprise how many artists value so little about their work, ideas, creativity and time. Every piece of art that you create not only has a price attach to it and your name too. Most stock photography and layout templates are destroying the art and design industry. What happens when people charge less and less for design? eventually it'll be free. Most stock photography and stock layout templates are making people value design less and less. Did you know any famous artist start out selling stock photos? Did you know anyone become a millionaire or billionaire selling stock designs? Do you really think every copy of your design worth just a little bit more than a black and white Xerox copy? would you rather sell a design at a premium price or selling a thousand copies at 25 cents a piece? There are laws of copy right in this country (U.S.) use them and use them well. Learn to protect your work, and learn how to sell them at a good price. Be the best that you can be. Best, Yvonne Xu. Owner of Pinnacle Design Center. http://www.PinnacleDesignCenter.com

I truely agree with Yvonne Xu. People are not evaluating their time versus the money

  • Playster.org · 4 months ago

    Enjoy!
