Thank you for the article about these brands. While I know I'm not on your top list, Adam & Eve has been Twittering about our promotions and interacting with our customers for about a year now. I'm always looking for new ways to utilize Twitter effectively, and having your list of these top brands will definitely give me more research to do! Maybe when you redo your list, we'll be on it - even though the products that we sell are more risque than others.

From my experience though, I love that Twitter gives me a way to get closer to our customers, especially since our market deals with very sensitive issues. I am able to see what people are curious about or what's the subject of the day and I can then use that information to showcase the products that we have that are on topic. I think Twitter has made our website much more topical and current for the trends of my industry. Plus, I've received invaluable tips and suggestions about our products from my followers that have been implemented. I always welcome the suggestions!

Thanks for the great post on Twitter examples and all the hard work to pull this together. Brands using Twitter seem to be expanding every day! The best ones are really working on using this to build community, as you said. I can't wait to share this with my UCSD students later this term.

Twitter has allowed us (RealNetworks) to have great interaction with our customers, and also with people who are curious about our products. It's been priceless for me to be able to communicate with the Twitter public and take their point of view and their suggestions, praise and criticism and incorporate it into our business. And while I spend a great deal of time on Twitter for work, the real reward is getting to know so many awesome people all over the world. It really is a fascinating study in social interaction.

Great Post. I'd be curious to see how quickly the 'go to' posters change as more and more people and businesses get onto Twitter. With everything happening so fast, I wonder if this will cement their authority, start a rapid changing of the guard cycle, or affect the medium in a negative way as one could argue with MySpace. Thanks for a great read though.

As far as entertainment goes, I wish I would have known you were compiling this list. I maintain the Kerasotes ShowPlace Theatres Twitter, and it is currently the only of its type in our industry as far as Movie Theatres go. I give away movie themed clothing and other paraphernalia, movie tickets and hold trivia contests online.

I also find Twitter to be a great tool for customer recovery when I find people who had poor experiences. Maintaining this twitter has become an integral part of my day, and helps keep office life fun!

Check out this tweet for one of my favorite ideas! When I knew a tweep was heading to the theatre...

Excellent collection of brand case studies employing Twitter. We follow some of them and hold their online efforts in high regard and we're so very pleased to see our beloved Blazers on the list. They deserve the attention.

We've been working on what Twitter means for our brand development practice at Pinch. A Design Office. At this point, we've been inspired by the people who we've come to meet by way of our little service related to brand, design, and sustainability (www.twitter.com/@Pinch_Bespoke) and we have entered into some long-term relationships as a result. Quite simply, Twitter has been an amazing tool.

Thanks for your efforts in compiling this list. Well done.

    Hey Mashable!

These lists are fun to read and always entertaining! My problem is that the same people get brought up over and over and it seems like no further investigation goes into finding the real people who are doing interesting things on Twitter.

I personally don't understand why a company like Intuit would be added to the list before FreshBooks.com (@freshbooks). Intuit has approx 7500 employees and millions of customers and yet only 1154 people follow them.

FreshBooks on the other hand is a company of less then 30 and we have 2174 followers and have been mentioned by the folks at Twitter as the first company to offer tech support through their service. Heck we do tonnes of cool stuff on twitter like have contests for cereal and really engage with our customers.

Another interesting thing to note is that we follow 2385 people and have 2174 following us back. Pretty interesting ratio while Intiut (and I use this example only because they are taking a slot in the category we should be in) is following about twice the number of people following them.

Now if I was Jack McCoy or Perry Mason I would pause dramatically and walk back to my chair allowing you to form your own conclusions.

I don't see Viscape on there yet! Happily enough, we have over 1,000 followers and our brand isn't even a year old yet! (of course, our Twitter account is a lot younger than that!) We're growing all the time -- we'll make it next year. ;)

Hi there. Great write-up! Qatar Airways was the first major overseas airline outside the US to actively use Twitter, and we couldn't be more happy. I hope the next time you're doing a write-up that we'll make your list of top companies. We're trying hard, and after about a half a year, we're getting a lot out of twitter.com/qatarairways. Like JetBlue said, it's an incredible listening tool. Have a look. It's still quite new, but I hope you'll agree, we've got one of the coolest skins in the industry! Happy travels from Qatar.

I also agree with Saul. Just because a company is on Twitter posting information, doesn't actually mean that they are responding or providing good information/service.

Disqus is also on Twitter and they have a team that monitors the @disqus account. They help you get set up and also troubleshoot any problems.

Shaquille O'Neal is as global a brand as any on your list, has repeatedly been credited wit taking twitter mainstram and is hilarious and frequent with his tweets. THE_REAL_SHAQ is a stellar brand in and of himsef. It's his brand as much as his tweets that accelerated his follower community

I agree with an above commentor about the Phoenix Suns. Even @PhoenixSunsGirl is very active on twitter and organizing activities. I hear the Suns do the best out of all sports teams. We need to get MLB and the NFL on board ASAP as well as some niche sports.

What irks me is how shamelessly people continue to PIMP their brand in the comment section (What about ME!!??!). It's so tiring to be constantly reminded of the ubiquitous degree of unctuous, self-interested corporate shill muddying the internet every millisecond of every day.

Though I am tempted to devote my entire comment to why my company's brand belongs here, I know 2 things- first, while we are working towards building a presence, we are not truly "there" yet, and also, I haven't seen @todayshow mentioned here.

With so many other news organizations on twitter, I am yet to see a single one interact with its' followers the way @todayshow does. In the beginning, I incorrectly assumed that it was maintained by an intern who was simply feeding headlines, and made a bit of a smartass comment along those lines. Shortly after, I received a response from Ryan Osborn, a producer on the Today Show, and the man behind @todayshow. He was very nice, and frankly...I've been a little embarrassed for my initial comment ever since :)

So, in an effort to learn more, I've watched the @todayshow stream, and must say, I've been pleasantly surprised to see actual interaction, questions answered, and *gasp* a major network engaging their followers on Twitter.

I'm a big fan of putting as much effort into praising people as you would criticizing, which is why I'm taking the time to post this- the Today Show is doing an excellent job, and other major networks would be wise to pay attention.

You can learn more about Ryan, and the Today Show's take on social media here:

By the way...this is an awesome article, thanks again Mashable!

Awesome post, but did you mean to title this "40 of the Best Corporate Brands on Twitter and the People Behind Them?" Some people themselves are brands on Twitter and have nothing to do with corporate America figuring out a new pipe to push their message.

    Jenn,

Thanks for including DIRECTV in your 40 Best Twitter Brands!

While I and many of us here have been active in online conversations for years (such as at DBSTalk.com and Satelliteguys.us), few communities are as immediate and concise as Twitter.

We all really enjoy connecting with customers, hearing what new features they value most and sharing how they can get the most from their service.

Thanks again for the tweet-by-tweet interview that evening and bringing some sunlight to the hard working folks behind the scenes - so in turn, I want to call out and thank Will on my team - a great asset to DIRECTV's Twitter presence and an outstanding blogger in his own right.

I'm a twit. terer for HotWings.ca @wingsandbeer and we're just giving shouts out to any chicken wing deals in all of the cities we're collecting info from. And with the looming chicken wing shortage set to douse the SuperBowl snack of choice, our peeps demand fresh info. And who doesn't want chicken wing trivia and links hand delivered lovingly to their device of choice.

It's an interesting experiment if nothing else, and I'm very keen on seeing how it evolves and gains even more momentum. Unless of course it's crushed my some other way slicker technology.

I also run the show over at Icona.ca so our clients reap the benefits of our experiments and research.

Hi Mashable - thanks for he interesting article on the top 40 brands using Twitter.

They are all B2C - do you have any examples of B2B companies using Twitter successfully?

We are a B2B publisher, with a paid subscription model - which makes trying to understand if and how we can use Twitter to our advantage, even more difficult.

Any help, advice or examples would be appreciated!

Great case study selection. I do have a question, however. So what about a case study on small local brands and effective it is for them to use twitter. Just by scanning this blog I have noticed that it is written extremely well and seems to have a lot of readers. I'm sure that most of them are small business owners and would like to see how this effects them as well. Twitter has been extremely successful for our national branding, but we also own a couple of car dealership's in the Metro Detroit Area and we have just begun what we like to call our "Micro Marketing" campaign. We have seen immediate results from this effort and will continue until it isn't cost effective any longer.

Hopefully by looking at the profile you can figure out how we are attacking our "LOCAL" market through Twitter!

Great list! Be great to see some Australian based websites/businesses on this list though? It seems somewhat "US centric". Also be good to see some "underground" brands that I think are using twitter fantastically to grow their brands.

As to the the media outlets on twitter. Unfortunately I think they seem to just use it to 'push content'.By this I mean to post headlines. If I want a headline I'll go to their website but when I'm following them on twitter I want them to 'engage' with me. This doesnt seem to be happening. Also the twitter @richardbranson, his pic is up there implying you can follow THE Mr. Branson. It's then kind of a let down when you realise its Virgin just posting (once again push content) media release headlines or marketing information.

I read this post a month ago, but I wanted let you know what Monsanto is doing with Twitter. Monsanto is an agricultural company and we have been using Twitter actively for the past 5 months. I am the "twit" in charge, and use it to engage with farmers, people who don't understand biotechnology, to announce the latest news with both the company and in agriculture, and to just talk to whomever wants to talk to me! We also have a separate account that "live tweets" from different trade shows, and soon from different farms the person will visit.

Impressive list for sure! Burns certainly didn't make the list this time, but just wait.... Burns has launched into the Twitter world as well as Linked In and Blog community building networks. We believe that it take persistence and patience to generate momentum in the industrial process market. We communicated at Interphex in New York, and are growing our following of temperature measurement folks. It's nothing new, although it seems like the bleeding edge in the circles that our customers and users operate within.

We are committed and not looking back!

We are a bakery located in doantown St. Paul, MN and are @spclassiccookie on Twitter. We found using Twitter was very useful, both for our customers and us. We Twitter when we have hot cookies coming out of the oven, our daily specials, when we have special products. It also has allowed us to interact with our customers on a very personal level, which I love.

I'm a twitter fanatic after less than 2 weeks. Was in broadband PR in mid 1990's before email adoption. Since then myspace, facebook...didn't get me excited. But with Twitter...totally different story. Our blog "30 Years in 52 Weeks" has grown more with tweets. Need a mental vacation...follow me http://www.deluciaoutdoors.com or http://www.twitter.com/deluciaoutdoors

I'm a little surprised by the "lack" of followership for some of the "best" brands.
  • seanang · 6 months ago
The examples you have given are those already have a Brand presence. I guess Twitter can further enhance the existing brand. Are there any cases whereby Twitter became the only tool for brand recognition? We have bloggers who became MPs, or companies who was initiated from Blogs. But Twitters?

I feel the real revolution in tweeting still has to take place. Big brands, with big brains are no doubt adapting to it, but once small businesses start coming over and start benefiting from twitter, then it will be cult! right now, the reach is gradually increasing in US but out of it, still a long way to go. I am in India and even the SEO community is not very enthusiastic about twitter here. once a few big brands come in, i am sure interest will explode! http://www.sidtech.biz

I was inspired by your blog and decided to freshen up my corporate twitter background I only just added twitter to our social networking. I'm a little gun shy about choosing acceptable resolutions as I want the background to be as friendly as possible to many computer screen sizes. Let me know what you think tweeter.com/concosystems

Taco Bell has a few local accounts for micro-marketing which I thought was smart. They also have @TacoBellTruck which people can follow and get free food on location and @FeedTheBeat which is all about music and helping indie artists (it also gives out some nice exclusive concert tix and other band swag).

Surprised that the New York Shock Exchange (www.newyorkshockexchange.com) was not included on your list. The Shock Exchange teaches competitive basketball skills and investment management skills to innercity kids in the NYC. In fact, the kids even run their own fund with stocks they picked and performed due diligence on . . . investment ballers aren't born . . . they're made
