Highly recommend adding jibberjobber.com to this list. Jason Alba's tool is incredible for those currently in job search and beyond. In addition his blog is a great encouragement. He highlights many experts in the field -- great networker for those who need connections.
  • Deborah · 9 months ago
I would add today.com, they have a (for pay) blogging program. It won't be big bucks for monst bloggers (just like a regular blog) but still, if you're not already blogging, it's agood place to start.

    I would like to add:

    Sell photographs on iStockPhoto.com
Print a t-shirt with your job skills for conferences: cafepress.com
Send thank you notes from americangreetings.com
Build an Android or iPhone app.
Print business cards with your top skills, and make it memorable - http://www.moo.com/products/minicards.php

And you can always learn how to price yourself for your next job.

I think people underestimate the scope of jobs available at a lot of these sites.
I found two jobs through craigslist recently. Another site worth checking out
in your free time is justaskgemalto.com, it's sort of one of a kind in terms of
the depth of digital security information it offers, data protection, firewalls,
    you name it.

Thanks for this blog - obviously a topical subject these days and something we're all spending a lot of time thinking/worrying about these days. Totally agree that Linked In is a great professional resource, particularly for networking.

I work at a social media agency in the UK, FreshNetworks, and we've recently been talking about how to maximize the potential of Linkedin by using it more like an online communitye than a social network. We particularly rate the groups function.

If you're interested, we recently wrote about this here:

I definitely feel http://visualcv.com should be on this list. With so many people seeking work, and so few positions, applicants need an extra edge and a fully interactive (images, video, audio, etc.), online resume that is FREE is another tool they can use to find a new position.

Ben - great list here. This article is an incredible resource.

For all you fellow job seekers out there, another great site that's not listed is Urban Interns (www.urbaninterns.com). It's basically a job board for internships and part time work. A lot of them are paid so it can be a great way to pick up work (or experience if that's what you need to get the next job). You can also post a profile for yourself so that employers can search for you.

Right now they are only in NYC, but I hear they are expanding.

Nojobsurvivor.com connects the unemployed across across the country and beyond, those that cannot meet face to face yet still share experiences and ideas as well as collect information and news relevant to being laid off. In addition to local job opportunities they highlight networking events in the area and articles with resume tips, ways to improve your search and so on. They have sites nationwide (in the footer of the site you'll find a link for the Local JobNetwork which lists all of their sites).

Don't forget to visit the unemployment website provided by your state. These sites frequently provide state unemployment handbooks in pdf format that can be downloaded from the Web. Get a copy to familiarize yourself with all of the unemployment options available, such as online filings, touch tone phone filings, etc., as well as other assistance you may be entitled to.

Your #1 site, eHow is a top site to visit when you're unemployed for another reason -- you can earn money writing and submitting articles on the sites. Some users, including myself, earn $1,000+ a month from residual earnings on our content. If you're unemployed and job hunting, look for ways to earn money online while you are searching for your next employment.

A good list of Websites, but you need more career sites on the list, such as QuintCareers.com (of course), as well as the Riley Guide, and Job-Hunt.org... workers who have been fired need to recover from the loss, seek unemployment benefits, retool their career documents and job-search materials, reconnect (if not already) with their network, and work long days digging up job leads, applying to jobs, and following up -- and these career sites have the tools to help all job-seekers succeed.

An awesome new resource for finding jobs or hiring someone is a new online community, www.WiHire.com. WiHire is a free online community that helps people find and fill jobs by allowing users to broadcast their job information to their online networks. It is a known fact that most jobs are found and filled through personal networks, but still people continue to hunt for jobs on job boards that grow more impacted each day. WiHire helps users easily leverage existing networks like Facebook, Linked In, Twitter, MySpace, Gmail, and Blogger to help get a job or fill an open position. This service promotes community involvement to help users and their friends find the right job or hire the right employee.

The founders said, "We wanted to do our part to help improve the economic situation so we are providing this pro-bono service to the public. WiHire is our gift to everyone that is struggling in these tough economic times."

Excellent stuff. I really think having fun is the answer. There is no fun when you're laid off. Typical coversations are money, mortgage, money, bills, money, and tax returns. There is definitely no shame attached to being laid off - definitely less so than thirty years ago. Try and appreciate the time as a way to think about what you really want to do. When was the last time you had a blank canvas? Onwards...

In this job market, candidates should leverage all the tools available to them including social networking sites. Not as a narcissistic way to let people know when you are watching American Idol, but as a way to connect to people who may be able to help you find a job.

There are a lot of great networking resources on many platforms. In May I "tweeted" about an article I read on how to find a job on Twitter: http://twurl.cc/thw.

If you are in Austin, Texas, there are some great resources to help you find a job. I tweet about them on a daily basis - you can follow me on Twitter (@jmarkunas), link to me on FB or LinkedIn!

Another great opportunity is the Job Search Boot Camp coming up on May 30th at St. Edwards University in Austin. http://twurl.cc/xuj

Find your unique promise of value -- what makes you stand out -- and remain positive in your job search!

Thanks for this comprehensive list of resources and suggestions. I counsel those in Career Transition daily. One of the biggest quesion I explore with people is, How are you going to stand out and be bold? It's perfectlyOK to send resumes on-line, but given the massive number of people applying for "generic" sales, marketing type of jobs, if you are not a brain surgeeon or chemical engineer, you wil get lost on that mass.
Make a list of 10 companies you want to work for in your area, research them, find an entry point, put together a nice "personal brand" package on yourself, with a personalized cover letter and resume, and personally deliver it to the entry point person at those companies. Make the case for why they SHOULD hire you.
