Mashable - The Social Media Guide: 24 Most Underrated Websites of 2008

  • Robert Harper · 11 months ago
This is a great resource of new ideas and I thank you for putting it together.
  • Television SPY · 11 months ago
Twitterise is good, but Twiturly is a bit flawed - because twitter converts urls into tinyurls if there isn't enough space to post them (so it all depends on the users message).
  • Joel Strellner · 11 months ago
We follow all shortened URLs to get their final destination URLs and then use that URL when we are doing the counts. Shortened URLs do not effect our algorithm.
  • Joel Strellner · 11 months ago
I'm not sure how much I like making this list, but thank you for including Twitturly.

2009 is going to be a much bigger year for us (2008 was pretty good to us though). Big stuff coming very soon.

    Thanks again.

I think you guys should check out www.myartspace.com. It is a social networking site for artists, gallerists, and art collectors. They are just over two years old and already have over 50,000 members. They also have a focus on the mainstream art world so you won't see anime doodles featured on their site like you do on other online art communities. The community is very professional in that respect.

They are also one of only three online art communities to have been involved with a major contemporary art fair and they just wrapped up a free to enter competition for art students involving $16,000 in cash scholarships. Not to mention that they have jurors from the Tate Modern, Whitney Museum of Art and other very respected institutions.

Not sure why they have slipped under the radar of Mashable, but it is a shame. As a niche social networking community they are great. Plus they don't limit how many images, video, or music you can upload. All of that stuff can be placed in galleries and you can create as many as you want. I like the fact that you can embed the flash galleries on other sites like Myspace and I think it works on Facebook as well.
  • Dgtlx.com · 11 months ago
Great list of websites! We will check them all one by one.
  • College Reviews · 11 months ago
Unigo is lacking in a lot of ways, I prefer http://www.MyNextCollege.com for college reviews. They're actually posted by students so you get the real scoop. Just a thought. The rest of the list is pretty good.
  • buzzvn · 11 months ago
Nice list and nice idea. In this business we all give up so much time to Google... that it's nice to shout about the small guys.

I love http://ratemydrawings.com/ - not sure how new it is but the way you can replay the sketching of artists work is great, and how the work is created is breathtaking.
  • Rist One · 11 months ago
Breathtaking if you like watching anime drawings that look like they came from a 'how to draw anime' book. The concept is great, but art sites today are flooded with generic anime scribble. Look at www.deviantart.com, they kind of have the thrown for that. Unfortunately, that is not what gallerists and most art collectors want to see in an art site.

Great list - some really good sites on it. Very helpful resources.
  • Tony · 11 months ago
With all due respect, this is an absolutely terrible listing of the 24 most underrated sites of 2008. There are less than a handful of worthy picks, and the rest really make me question the integrity of the research and thought put into Mashable's analysis on this post. In your organization's opinion, what makes some of these sites clever, or worth keeping an eye on in 2009? Additionally, have you really done a thorough job checking out the competitive set of each? I highly doubt it. Although I won't name other sites, I can easily look at a few of these categories and rattle off more well-positioned competitors that prove a combination of community, technology, business model, team, open integration, and vision (that received little or no press in 2008). Don't get me wrong, I enjoy Mashable, and read it daily, but this posting is absolutely terrible, as it offers no definition, or rationale. Please update this post, and do better for 2009 =)

    Very Concerned.
  • dingobully · 11 months ago
Wow Tony you just really took this blog posting way too seriously. Don't let it ruin your day, man, it's just a list of links. Breathe.

In 2009 http://gigfreaks.com will not be underrated for it gives true value to music lovers!
  • Frank! · 11 months ago
No one has checked out searchme.com? If you want a search that resembles a search through your ipod, here is the place.Pick a word, and you will get a list of websites you can slide through. Log in and you can stack the pages you like in the corner. Why Google hasn't done this is beyond me. I like it when I need to see a website before I visit.
  • Tamsin Harriman · 11 months ago
Nice list. I actually didn't know about any of these. I especially like CoNotes - have been trying to find startups that are hiring , this makes it a bit easier! JobBite is nice too - I hope it takes off and gets more reviewers.

UEatCheap - what a great (and rather timely) concept! I like it. Although their search on the front page does *not* work at the mo., which is frustrating, and I don't think they have many restaurants yet. Where The Locals Eat is very good. I found a number of good-looking restaurants in Berkeley (where I lived while in college) that I had never noticed before! As someone who travels quite a bit and loves food, I think I'll find this very useful - especially if they expand outside the U.S.

Yes, I'm a job seeker and a foodie. Can you tell? ;)

  • Laxminarayan Kamath A · 11 months ago
I've been happily using tagz (http://tagz.in), a relatively new, lesser known social bookmarking site for around 3 months now. It solves a number of problems associated with tagging, and boy! the feature requests get implemented real quick :-) .
  • kyle · 11 months ago
I would have to disagree with twittertise, i think it's a horrible idea
  • Laxminarayan Kamath A · 11 months ago
Thanks for the list. Zenbe and twittery are making to my bookmark list.
  • Meryl K. Evans · 11 months ago
Slideboom.com does a great job converting PowerPoint presentations and keeping their animations. It doesn't get enough attention as it's overshadowed by another site.

RadioTime.com is also overlooked. You can search, save, and discover radio near you and on the other side of the world from you.
  • Ben Strackany · 11 months ago
I like the variety, and some of these sites look pretty cool, but some feel a bit lightweight to be considered one of the top 24 underappreciated sites of 2008.

Also, I would argue that if a great site were truly underrated, it probably wouldn't make this list, since it seems that every site on the list has already been written up in Mashable (twice, if you include the original article & then again getting listed). IMO if Mashable writes favorably about you, that's a good amount more attention than many (deserving or no) sites get.
  • dave · 11 months ago
Its a good list. How come you didnt put : http://www.music.gm in it ?
  • Matthew · 11 months ago
