You might be interested in http://iconfu.com - an online icon editor - works for png, gif as well as ico images - combined with a huge library of free icons. So you can modify stuff from the library, upload your own, or draw a new icon from scratch. Makes gif animations too. It looks like it's the most powerful icon editor out there (but I confess, I'm biassed :)).

I created an iphone-icon-generator which allows you to upload an image which then gets manipulated to create the glossy i-phone style icon. You can even upload multiple images at once to generate your entire set of icons.
Another great icon generator http://www.flavorstudios.com/tools/iphone-icons... I found while personalizing my iphone. Create and download favicons, apple-touch-icons, and iphone application icons. I found it to be a useful tool because it lets you make your own icons for free and also explains how to integrate the icons with your website.
