According to the chart - it appears Netvibes and PageFlakes are going all out to be the one solution for as many as possible

Wow. I still don't believe in using start pages although if I did, I think netvibes or the google startpage would be the ones that I would use.
  • Pete Cashmore · 2 years ago
Yeah, I'm not using one consistently either.

I have a suggestion, Does anyone thought about defining an XML standard for developing gadgets?
    For example:
    I like Pageflakes,
I want to use google as my search engine,
Yahoo mail, Live messenger presence - to see Who's online and see list of my friends from facebook.
I want to use gadgets from any site on any personalize homepage the same way I can reed RSS with any RSS aggregator.

    Lizi,

Lizi, Netvibes' Universal Widget API is an "XML standard" for developing gadgets. http://dev.netvibes.com/

I'm a diehard My Yahoo fan -- not sure exactly when that happened, but I love the integration between my maail, news, RSS feeds and small business/domain management.

To be honest, it's not the greatest interface, but I get a ton of functionality out of it.

Great post, am only missing Nowsy.com, I read they have over 50.000 users, and were reviewed on Techcrunch some time ago.
  • Webwag Team · 2 years ago
Webwag.com is synchronizable with mobile handsets: real widgets on mobile.
  • Ashmin · 2 years ago
I really like NetVibes but its harder to acess all that I want. iGoogle has everything that I use on it including gMail GCal and Google Docs. I also use that widget that lets use have a webpage in a tab. It works perfectly.
  • Jeff · 2 years ago
You really need to take a new look at "My Yahoo."

It has a beta out that allows 4 columns, the ability to take off the links along the left column. The ability is there to add any RSS feed you find, and they are continuing to build more Yahoo modules as well.
  • James Mowery · 2 years ago
I tried searching for it, did not locate this option.
  • xlerate · 2 years ago
I remember I was an die hard MYWAY.COM user since 2002 or so. One of my first customized home pages since (erols..oh man dial up) Myway.com offers customized content and add ons.

But as stated with smaller providers, it was not worth it.

They returned 0 that in none of my e-mails for support.
To this day, their cheezy themes are still broken if you select certain combinations. UNRESOLVED.

Content goes missing and service unavailable.
It's tough when you rely on your homepage and its not there.

I am now a diehard Netvibes user.
I pray nothing like this ever happens to Netvibes.
  • Zia · 2 years ago
Fantastic. Many thanks for this. As suspected, NetVibes is a cut above the rest. I will mention your post on my blog.
  • carry · 2 years ago
pageflakes is by far the best. what other page let's you publish your site with a few mouse-clicks?

    carry
  • Tim Johnson · 2 years ago
Anybody here about Krackle.com the new homspage with an amazing twist for users ?
  • Brian · 2 years ago
There's a very important feature missing from the comparison. Ability to make public page/tab and have direct URL to see that page/tab.

Pageflakes and Protopage both have this feature. But others including Netvibes don't. Isn't this a really useful feature? Did you use Netvibes's feature set as base for comparison and skipped other startpage's unique features?
  • mark meeus · 2 years ago
I tested almost all of them for a few days. They are handy, but I can't use them as my browsers startpage. Most of the time I open my browser I want to visit some other site. All of these sites load slow (compared to about:blank) and it bothers me. Now I use http://go.nzal.es, it's fast and allows me to go to wherever I want with only 4 keystrokes.

    http://www.WireI.com
  • sarah · 2 years ago
Thanks for this list. Really cool. Like another guy here I am using itsmynews.com. I like the fact that they have a big database of content and a very simple navigation.
  • Heather Pam · 2 years ago
You can try www.homepageforme.com. I like its RSS and customized links features. Just simple and practical.
  • hugo · 2 years ago
and I found another cool webtop at web-windows.de
  • habam · 2 years ago
well, the approaches described here are quite cool but there exist systems which seem to be even more sophisticated. http://www.oos.cc for example offers a full grown web based desktop including word processing, mailing, personal webpage and photoalbum.

Another start page website to consider is Odysen, http://www.odysen.com. Includes widgets, multiple pages that you can easily share with others, and social networking features.
  • Suya · 1 year ago
What do you think about Ginger (the new netvibes)?

I found another start page website's list. Check this out : http://www.oonania.com/webapps/start_page.html

I know this (very useful) posting is somewhat stale, but do you know which of these, if any, are free of advertising?

    Thanks,

Have you done a follow-up to this with current startpages? Are all the pages listed here still major competitors?
  • jo54 · 1 year ago

I see another thing that isn't reviewed...which has bothered my since switching to Netvibes after reading this article. I have used MSN for years...pretty happy with it but now they changed it AGAIN and I have had it. My MSN always loaded very quickly...and Netvibes just takes too long! I am going to try Google...tried it a few years ago but too many bugs. Any of you out there found one that also loads fast? My homepage is VERY simple....weather...calculator...major news...calendar...link to hotmail...just easy stuff like that. I want one that isn't complicated and doesn't take forever to load!!

This is really a good site comparing start page sites.
There are a few products like the Openwave's Richmail(TM) 3.0 or the upcoming Dashboard(TM) that provide, in addition to these kind of widgets, a comprehensive messaging and communication solution on a single page.
I would be grateful if someone has studied its features with the start page providers like iGoogle et al? I was wondering how Dashboard's features would appeal users as the solution comes to consumers only through broadband/mobile service providers.

Should include Shiny Search (ShinySearch.com). Its like a mini version of igoogle themes but better looking!
  • steve · 8 months ago
You should check out the new Dronggo.com Great set up for a homepage. Cool cover flow, chat feature, all the widgets you need or want. Its been up a day and i think its better than any of those other sites out there.
  • Suz · 7 months ago
I absolutely love dronggo.com It's easy to use and not cluttered like some other sites. Check it out - I'm glad I found it!

My Yahoo home page has to much advertising, and when you click on a story your forced to listen to a commercial.

    I'm glad I switched.
