Mashable - The Social Media Guide: 14 Alternative Browsers That Are Not IE6

  • owl · 3 months ago
Definitely need to mention Arora. It's lightweight, based on webkit, and UI done in Qt 4.5. In other words, best of all worlds. I can't believe it didn't make the list!
  • sebastian · 3 months ago
wait a second. ie 6 never came out for mac, so why are there mac alternatives?

yes, i know ie 6 sucks, but how did you confuse the operating systems? how about you show your "camino" and other mac only alternative with a $2000 price tag?
  • me · 3 months ago
thats cuz ... i dont know but macs stiil rocks :D
thats why there are alternatives :DD
  • me · 3 months ago
BTW the post is about ALTERNATIVES BROWSERS (that not IE6) it doesnt mean the browser are alternatives FOR IE6....
  • jamie1984 · 3 months ago
This first sentence suggests slightly differently to my interpretation:
"As some of you may know, we’ve been waging an IE6 Must Die campaign here at Mashable (see the post that kicked it off here). In that spirit, we thought it wise to arm you fine folks with a few alternatives for your web browsing pleasure."

Sounds abit like they actively aim at suggesting IE6 users to change there browsers.

I've been using Opera for the past 6 months and I love it. Best I've used by far
  • tweetamar · 3 months ago
I really like using Chrome. I hope they introduce an official Mac Chrome. But I'll check out the Chromium!
  • jvasko · 3 months ago
I thought that Chromium was the name of the future Mac Chrome.
  • phylliskhare · 3 months ago
I use IE8 and Flock - which I love - and I'm still figuring out all the cool things it does. I will also go into Firefox to check things as I work. There are some programs like MailChimp that just don't like IE8 and only work well in Flock and FF. I use tagfoot - and it's seems like that works best in IE8. It would be NICE to have one that does it all... As I work with websites - I have to check them all to see how they look on different browsers. As some fonts get wonky in certain browsers.
  • plasticmadness · 3 months ago
I have used Opera, IE8, Safari, K-meleon, Camino and Google Chrome.
    Oh and Firefox. :-P
My choice is obviously Firefox. I have been using it for ages. Google Chrome is my second choice - sometimes FF gets buggy and there's nothing better than the uber-lightweight and ultra-fast G.Chrome. My main problem with using other browsers is: I cannot live without Adblock. Also I have certificates installed so there are certain things I can only do with Firefox. I have Opera and IE8 installed, but I rarely if ever use it.
  • Sundrum · 3 months ago
Great survey! What about IE7? (not that I really care... ;) I couldn't more think of anything I wish would die, and sooner, than IE6. And yet all we can really do is wait...shouldn't it be a negligible browser within, say two more years? One can only hope....
  • jamie1984 · 3 months ago
IE7 should really in my opinion as it almost a just Windows XP browser they should in time be forced to go upto IE8 (IE8 is supported by XP after all)
  • futtta · 3 months ago
Regarding Konqueror and the author's remark "Though it hasn’t quite conquered the browser market just yet": as Konqueror's html-rendering engine khtml was the basis for Webkit, which in turn powers a.o. Safari, and Chrome and which dominates the mobile browser landscape, one could say that Konqueror did succeed in conquering a large part of the browser market? Kudo's to those guys, really!
  • docrpm · 3 months ago
i hate IE6 with an unbridled passion (or fury, depending on how you look at it), and would love for it to die. this is a great list for individuals or small companies looking for a solid alternative. thanks for putting it together!!

unfortunately, i think the problem is not a lack of better (free) browsers. the central problem is this: you could easily retitle your post as "14 browsers that large-scale corporate IT won't / can't adopt." the biggest issue is an installed base of IE6 inside big companies where (a) it's hard to migrate the entire installed base at once, and (b) they want to maintain centralized control over software installs. until corporate IT has a clear option or the need becomes so dire to upgrade, IE6 will live on, haunting and taunting us (maybe for years to come).
  • eltonlester · 3 months ago
It's more that there are applications developed for IE6 that break in the newer browsers because IE6 was so broken to begin with. Pushing out any software should not be an issue for any IT dept. that is constantly patching machines. It's the same process
  • Yael Rozencwajg · 3 months ago
It's time to finish with ie6, please forward this post to all you clients, customers, friends, parents, siblings...so we won't have to spend hours anymore to re&re&review our CSS, js incompatibility and so much bugs I can't even remember...
Thanks for all the anonymous webmasters I represent,
    -Y

I am a convert to Google Chrome, lightweight and fast, just what you need for surfing. Firefox takes second place and has a number of tools/add-ins that you just can't get for Chrome but for the most part I don't need them or want them cluttering up the place, Firefox seems decidedly clunky next to Chrome.
  • Leesa Barnes · 3 months ago
I am soooooo anti-Microsoft. I use Open Office or Google Docs and I use any browser that isn't that insufferable IE.

Firefox was once my fav, but I made the switch to Chrome just 2 weeks ago because Firefox has become so unstable. I have no clue why, but it crashes all the time. When I upgraded to the latest version (I think) 3.0.13, Firefox would crash at least 6-times every hour. It got so bad that I desperately made the switch to Chrome.

So far, Chrome is good, but what I miss are the add-ons. Firefox has a TON of add-ons and unfortunately, Chrome has so few. The ones that do exist, I don't need them.

Anyone else having problems with Firefox? I'm on Windoze XP, Service Pack 2-million.
  • Josef Richter · 3 months ago
maybe you could have mentioned Stainless (http://www.stainlessapp.com/), currently the only browser together with Chrome to support separate threads.
  • Zedo Mann · 3 months ago
Firefox 3.5 seems to be the fastest Firefox yet for me. It opens fast, runs good. Incidentally, IE8 and IE7 seem to load slowly for me.
  • starbabyonline · 3 months ago
I used to love FF, then it became ridiculously unstable. It was crashing constantly. I've been happily using Chrome for about the past 6 months. Miss the FF add-ons, though.
  • Cal · 3 months ago
Firefox is still the best, no matter what - IE stinks
  • Rei · 3 months ago
    Firefox FTW!
  • jamie1984 · 3 months ago
Considering IE6 is basically is only a Windows Application - the proposers for IE6 to be scrapped and discontinued should come up with at least 3 suggestions for each windows version with 'xyz is available for'

For Windows 98 upto Windows Server 2003/ XP (also has to have better security and standards than IE6)

Also abit stupid to promote Mac Only and Linux Only Browsers above when IE6 is not available on the Mac! (or Linux)

I've been using Google Chrome for awhile and enjoy the speed, I find Firefox slower but when developing websites the Firebug extension is very helpful. As such Firefox is my default browser when developing websites.
  • dancastellano · 3 months ago
The situation with IE6 in Japan is similar. These browsers definitely need more exposure!

Ive been impressed with Chrome, making it my #2 browser behind Firefox ... that is UNTIL I met Iron (a security improved spinoff of Chrome) and now I think I'll be uninstalling Chrome.

Iron is basically the SAME as Chrome, but invisibly a tad bit more secure.

  • Trent · 3 months ago
Oh, I forgot to mention that Iron has a built in adblock.
Basically it is Chrome + security +adblock.
and it is free, of course.

I have FF, Chrome, and IE 8 on my computer; used to have Safari (which I do love), but it's a memory hog. Flock takes up a lot of memory too. At work I use Chrome, but I have an old computer and Chrome's speed is it's best asset, but at home I use FF because of all the add-ons.
  • Yuki@Lunascape · 3 months ago
As some of the tweets mention, we also make a competent browser. Lunascape comes with 3 popular rendering engines into 1 and gives users lots of customization options.
    Lunascape = IE (Trident)+Firefox (Gecko)+Chrome・Safari (Webkit)
Hope you guys check it out, if you have not done so already. http://www.lunascape.tv
  • Jeff · 3 months ago
Awesome. Because if there's one thing I love as a web developer, it's testing my stuff over and over and over and over again.

How many of these are standards compliant? At least a lot of the more obscure ones are based on WebKit...
  • 36braids · 3 months ago
i like Firefox more than anything..haha...
  • Tinh · 3 months ago
Great collection, this the first time I know many other browsers from the list
  • Mike · 3 months ago
My problem is ANY browser I use has to be compatible with Roboform. I couldn't browse without my Roboform!
  • gee · 3 months ago
I have used IE, Firefox, Safari, Chrome, and Opera.

I liked Firefox, especially all the add-on choices, but it seems to have slowed down with some of the updates.

Opera became my favorite, but for whatever reason began to crash when I used it.

Now I currently use Safari or Chrome (why does it HAVE to be blue?!).
  • Carl · 3 months ago
Amazing list of browsers. Now if only IE6 would go away. You can see how long we have to wait at this site http://www.ie6death.com/
  • Tony · 3 months ago
I use Safari 4. I wish that Safari and Firefox could both have a baby so that I could enjoy both of their respective great features; speed for Safari and add-ons/customizability for Firefox.
  • Vinit Sharma · 3 months ago
I'm using Firefox since it was released first and never have looked back to IE again. I like FF because its security features and add-ons. I've a specific set of addons which have made browsing for me simpler. Though I've to use IE at work, so I get a taste of browsing on both platforms. But i completely like FF for all that it is. Currently I'm using FF 3.5 and my experience by far is good.
I also tried Google Chrome for some time but later gave it up because of my familiarity with FF. I also downloaded and tried Safari few months back when they did their latest release.
  • Louis Han · 3 months ago
I've been using Firefox all the way.
  • dainathomas · 3 months ago
Great list ..Out of this I love Mozilla Firefox .. (for its addons and extensions) then I have downloaded Chrome .. which I have been using since it was launched ... ( I like it for its speed) and then I have used Safari and Maxthon ,and I feel Safariis better then Maxthon ...
But the Best remains Best - Mozilla Firefox

    Cheers,
    Daina

Konqueror is the only piece of software I really, REALLY miss after switching to OS X last year. I would suspect most users don't realize how powerful it is.
  • Igor Kheifets · 3 months ago
I have used Firefox, Explorer, Opera, Chrome, Maxthon, Safari and Flock.

Firefox and Flock(extension of Firefox) proved to be the best

You have also failed to mention Avant Browser which is pretty popular.

Another fast & lean browser for Mac , I recommend you try "Stainless" (http://www.stainlessapp.com/)
It is a showcase for multi-processing like "Chrome" as developers said:)
  • Fons · 3 months ago
Clear list, I like firefox and Chrome the most !
  • chrissycurran · 3 months ago
Good list of browser. I am releasing alpha versions of my own browser for windows called zed. For download times and more information - go to - http://81990.edicypages.com , thank you
  • frank · 3 months ago
I switched to CometBird from FF.
  • mp09ind · 3 months ago
That's good article but I beleive most of browser uses same engine and for a browser it's engine is most important part. Can you point out engine used in each browser and it's parent(where engine has been inheriated)
  • timmustoedesign · 3 months ago
I'm sort of the opposite to a power user. I don't get too many add-ons or extras. I want my browser to do just that - Browse. The thing is that all of these are no doubt up to the task for me, but I prefer FF. Its friendly, it doesn't crash and it does what I need it to do.

I'm a bit stumped why choosing a browser is such a big thing... surely it's a means to an end as opposed to an end in itself?
  • Ash Menon · 3 months ago
I like your approach to it, it's very refreshing to see someone who doesn't want Everything-And-The-Kitchen-Sink plugged into their browser.

My opinion is that if the means to the end are used so often as browsers, you'd want to think about making a good choice. Similiar to purchasing a car. The car in itself only gets you from A to B, but there are a lot of long term factors we take into account. Of course, since the browser is free, there's a lot less weight in the decision, but generally you'd want a browser that gives you exactly what you're looking for.
  • Name · 3 months ago
I use Chrome! (: I used to use Firefox but after downloading 3.5 it started to lag really badly so I switched over to Chrome and it's marvelous.
  • WordsmithBob · 3 months ago
Ahhh...the browser wars revisited. let's see...my current experience is that IE8 locks up my computer or crashes. I had to use a special software that guts IE8 to get it to finally work right. I tried using Safari but it won't work with many website functionality like my bank and it has a tendency to fold up and die if I ask too much of it like interacting with a website. I love FireFox but I use it strictly for SEO. I have so many SEO toolbars loaded into it now that it's useless for simple browsing.

IE is still the only browesr that seems to work with every website I visit and use. However, I do highly recommend FireFox if you haven't turned yours into a fire-breathing SEO machine!
  • fbrichaut · 3 months ago
I love Chrome - very fast and friendly. Doesn't work with the occasional sites (like some old crappy sites and internal corporate stuff) so I switch to IE if I need to visit them.

FF is way, way too buggy. And slow.
  • Jeremy · 3 months ago
I've been using Camino ever since I discovered it a year ago. I've had no problems with it - it seems to work great. Although integration of the usual features seems to lag per release (like reordering tabs), I like the idea of a browser that uses the Cocoa API. Plus, when anyone else uses my computer they usually pass over Camino for a more familiar browser like Firefox or Safari (both excellent browsers, my preference in Safari), and I feel fine leaving my keychain working with Camino. I'm interested for any feedback on Shiira.
  • Dave · 3 months ago
The one missing in the list is Ti-Took (titook.net). Ti-Took is not a web browser per say. Ti-Took is a web browser environment, which comes with a web browser (based on Google Chrome) and a management tool allowing you to browse the web in a personalized and secure way. Ti-Took could be use with Firefox, IE and Chrome. Please check it out.
  • p0p0 · 3 months ago
Firefox! So many useful plugins for web development.
  • Aniruddh D · 3 months ago
Some browser are missing in the list:

Wyzo- a Firefox based Browser, AOl Explorer, Aol 9.1 but I think people not using that much AOl browsers& Songbird browser with advanced audio streaming features and built in media player with library based on Mozilla Technology.

I like Wyzo And Flock personally..Flock for social Integration and Wyzo for the UI and Download speed. Wyzo UI is really really good similar to Google Chrome but they used it as a revers side.
  • researchgirl · 3 months ago
I'm a huge advocate of Firefox (the tabbed browsing on newest IE still doesn't quite do it for me), I've recently become a fan of Chrome, but ONLY for use on my netbook. Chrome's layout makes much better use of the smaller screen real-estate on the netbook, and that's a huge plus.
  • Jean Chicoine · 3 months ago
Opera forever! I quite like Firefox, I keep it installed on my machine, but I rarely use it. I'm an Opera browser absolute fan, the fastest, safest, coolest, sexiest browser.
  • oliver · 3 months ago
    you forgot lynx.
  • Jean Chicoine · 3 months ago
being a text-based browser, so not displaying non-text content like images and videos, and even if it can launch the programs to handle them, lynx will never appeal to the general public...
  • hannah · 3 months ago
I LOVE using Opera. Absolutely love it. It's fast, customizable, and very easy to use!
  • George M. · 3 months ago
"The latest version 3.5 is supposedly faster than ever, but in practice I personally find it feels subjectively slower than past iterations."
yes, same opinion here. Also, on my home computer it crashes more often than soe beta software I used. I switched almost entirely to a combination of Chrome and Opera 10.

    Where QT Web???
  • Lynne d Johnson · 3 months ago
I've been using Cruz on the mac the past couple of weeks. It's a social browser (like Flock, but different), that's basically a cocoa app. It takes a little bit to configure exactly the way you want it, but once you do it's kind of worth it. It's good at enabling you to watch all of your social web activities all at once. Great for second screen browsing.
  • tobylane · 3 months ago
You repeat Gecko-based shit too much. Narrow it down to IE series (as an ending mention), Opera (desktop - best, mobile - best and most popular), WebKit and if you must, Gecko. Others are trivial but worth saying. Just repeating what are little (but something) more than gecko shells is a stupid list.
  • Ash Menon · 3 months ago
I've been using Opera for the past year or so. Occasional, EXTREMELY rare problems with layout / display, but generally it's as smooth as slick, and yes, it's insanely fast.

But my reason for picking Opera is the amazing built in email / RSS client.
  • Tamas Gloetzer · 3 months ago
I use FireFox 3.5, and I agree, it is slower... plus it crashes a lot... can't wait for a patch that fixes these issues...
  • Jean Chicoine · 3 months ago
well, me again, just to say: Opera 10 has been released on September 1st and, man, it's fast!
the claim has always been that Opera is the fastest browser on Earth, well, now that it's equiped with the rendering engine Turbo, it IS the fastest browser on Earth!
definitely, and check that out, other browsers will eventually reproduce the Turbo technology like they have done with the tons of innovations that Opera came up with first (speed dial, tab browsing, wand, content blocking, history, panels, skinning, mobile toolbars, customization, privacy management, mail and rss integration, etc., etc., etc.), nothing wrong there, on the opposite, i'm for the diffusion of performance and good taste, as long as the borrowers credit the source and don't claim the innovations are theirs,
    Opera is the best, period
  • tobylane · 2 months ago
Not quite right. It displays info from the web fastest, with its rendering engine Presto. Webkit is apparently faster for local stuff. Turbo is what they first used in Opera Mini, which is for phones. It speeds up dialup by compression.

But yes, Opera is the best and has been for ages. People put up with the ads for a reason, and they're long gone.
  • Jean Chicoine · 2 months ago
I stand corrected. Actually, I set the Turbo engine on automatic, since I've got a fast internet connection and I don't need the Turbo for all of the sites I visit.
  • Aleks · 3 months ago
I highly recommend to use GreenBrowser - N 1 for me.
  • Jay · 2 months ago
I think Firefox beats every other browser. Chrome would run a close second.
  • Liz Gallagher · 2 months ago
I love choices, but all these different browsers and versions only makes my job (web developer) that much harder! If only these companies would all comply to a CSS standard that works consistently on all browsers... but Noooooooooooo! We have to run cross browser tests to make sure that our websites look the same in all of them. Thank God for tools like BrowserShots (http://browsershots.org/) -- otherwise we could never keep up!
  • camera tripod · 2 months ago
Hey this is a great article all major types of explorer are listed. Its so much valuable information for me.From all these listing I had used firefox.opera and internet explorer its nice experience to use it.

Add 15: Stainless, a Mac-only browser that's very basic but blazingly fast. It's the standard browser on my Macbook.

    http://www.stainlessapp.com/
  • ungeziefer · 2 weeks ago
Have to agree the Mac-only browsers don't really belong on this list.
