Drupal is the old hotness. Concrete5 is the new hotness. It has a significantly better UI than Drupal and not as much community cruft to sort through to find what you want. A number of social sites are moving on to C5.

One of the most amazing examples that I've seen of social media being used for good is Danny Brown's 12for12k Challenge.

He's gathered an incredible group of people to help 12 different charities throughout 2009, and they've raised more than $30,000 so far. No superstars, no agenda - just normal Twitter users helping make the world a better place. They've inspired me to help locally with my food bank and I think they do an amazing job.

workingman: now that you mention it, the libertarians are ideally positioned to usurp the republicans as the opposition party to the democrats. ron paul made some great progress, but he's just not a viable candidate. and his platform needs a lot of work to make it palatable to a majority. and social media will clearly be the way.

Is this revolution actually doing more harm than good by allowing people to think they are making a difference, when they really aren't.

I can become a fan of a cause on facebook, so I don't have to actually send money, or volunteer, or do something that actually makes a difference.

The real danger is turning real activists into armchair activists.

This is a wonderful article attempting to pull the good people are doing from all ends together in a nice package. when i first listened to Playing for Change I teared (watching Matt also moved me, but with more laughs!)

i also wanted to thank you for linking to the Social Actions Map that I created! Because of the response I’m growing this idea with the hopes of delivering a more transparent and engaging application for NGOs to have at their disposal. There are so many amazing orgs doing great things, but for one reason or another many go unnoticed. This is my current contribution to the wonderful world we live in.
