This is awesome - thanks! I'm a PR pro, and a HUGE fan of HARO as well. Peter's service is by far the best - and it's TOTALLY FREE! I hadn't heard of ReportingOn or BeatBlogging though, so thanks for the tips!!
  • Chris Ritke · 1 year ago
Wow. This is cool. Didn't know there's so much out there. But I don't think any of this online stuff can replace real relationships. You know, the kind where you meet face to face. It's always difficult to figure out who you can trust. Unless you've met them in the real world. And even then....

If you want to find out about US and international journalists, you can always try NewsCred. For example : http://www.newscred.com/author/show/name/james-...
  • TM · 1 year ago
I should point out that I can't find any search functionality for their journalists. I hope they add that soon cuz it's pretty annoying without.
  • Linda D · 1 year ago
Great list - Gonna have to set aside some time to explore these!
  • Andy Finkle · 1 year ago

  • Maria Olsson-Tysor · 1 year ago
Great overview of social media for PR and media people!
  • Mike Pilarz · 1 year ago
Excellent list. I'd add one more: RSS feeds for Google search results, which just launched this week. Very useful for monitoring key trends, spokespersons, etc.

Here's ReadWriteWeb's take on how to put them to use:

    Super post.
This was written by Marshall Kirkpatrick in his role as a blogger but everything here applies to PR professionals who need to be on top of the news and frame the discussion: http://marshallk.com/open-sourcing-my-techcrunc...

(Disclaimer: ZapTXT, our company is listed as one of the services in Marshall's post)

Great list, and not just because PBwiki was on it twice (as a wiki example, and because we host the Media People Using Twitter wiki).

I'll echo the above posters--we use HARO, and have gotten several story placements out of it, along with a bunch of prizes for a contest we held for teachers. Shankman is a genius.
  • Beth Mansfield · 1 year ago
Great list Sarah. I'm a huge fan of HARO and PitchEngine and am always looking for new (and effective) ways to integrate social media into our PR strategy. This list will keep me busy for an afternoon...
  • Sonia Coleman · 1 year ago
I loved this list, Sarah! Great job. I wrote a post about it on my blog, ColemanUnlimited.com. These excellent tools would are helpful whether you are a in small PR department or a full-time consultant and freelance writer like me. I'm already a HARO member, but I'll definitely be spending more time researching these other tools. Thanks for sharing.
  • Ryan Sholin · 1 year ago
Thanks for calling out ReportingOn and Wired Journalists! I'm a big HARO fan as well, and I've been keeping an eye on PitchEngine.
  • Steve Kayser · 1 year ago
Congrats. Well done article. I'd also add to the list and check out Shannon Whitley's PrxBuilder http://www.prxbuilder.com. I use it and has been extremely useful an effective.
  • Julie Donnelly · 1 year ago
We journalists have limited access to resources - not access to limited resources. We do not appreciate misplaced modifiers.
  • Matt · 1 year ago
Great list! I'd also recommend http://journalistsource.ca/ a Canadian newsletter with a similar focus to HARO.
  • Luis Galarza · 1 year ago
Nice list, as a online entrepreneur, I use some of these sites to develop PR relationships and to have my articles or press releases gain more exposure. This list is indeed a good resource for publishers, PR pros, and online business owners.
  • Mary Nurse · 1 year ago
Sarah-this is really great information. Thank you for putting it all together!
  • Nan Varoga · 1 year ago
Great resources....several of them I'd not seen before. My favorite - Journalisted. Looks a whole lot easier then trying to track people down through media web sites. We're always looking for ways to help our members (Texas Public Relations Association) be better communicators. You've found some good ones. I'm definitely sharing at www.tprablog.wordpress.com.

Another upcoming PR tool is socialmedialibrary.co.uk. It is a new website created by a reputed PR team in London and provides an up to date list of blogs, forums, podcasts and social networking sites. It is different from technorati and other websites as it provides a well researched list of sites including contact details and other relevant information on each site. It is not an automated list but each site is researched manually.

The search feature on Twitter is very helpful for finding conversations regarding a beat/topic. Great place to join a conversation, find people to follow regarding a topic (and also have people follow you.)

Sarah - you rock amiga! Your list is fantastic, and I love HARO so I know you are right on with the others, some of which I have never delved into and will now.

I operate a successful online news Web site and I can tell you that these bozo sites you listed won't be around after 2009. Only the strong survive.

Thank you for the great resources. Your post includes brilliant social media tools for PR professionals. As a student, I am unfamiliar with many of the sites and can't wait to pass them on to fellow students. I recently highlighted your post in my blog (brandtjen.wordpress.com). Thanks again for the tips.

I´m a big fan of HARO and PE. Another cool PR tool that I can recommend to try out is http://publish.mynewsdesk.com/en - Scandinavian simplicity, almost like IKEA :)
